A bunch of clips of PRR K4s Pacifics doing what they always did best....I thought the original dubbed audio for these scenes was kinda dull so I dubbed in my own sounds using authentic PRR steam engine audio. Hope you like...and hope the guys at Green Frog don't mind.

The greatest sight I ever saw was double headed K4s on the NY&LB in my early childhood. I was never the same after that and when steam disappeared in 1957 I lost a part of my soul.

Thank you for posting this video. I'm a railfan, but guess not a true railfan, as my heart belongs to the steamers. Love the sound of the wheels on the rails. The sound of the steam escaping the pistons. The sound of the horn and bell. I'm 68 years old and grew up with the steam trains. I watched sadly as slowly they were replaced with diesels, and electric. The power of steam and the dependibility of these trains will never be equal. GREAT, GREAT Video thank you again for posting.

The PRR k4 class locomotives are a thrill and very enjoyable to see in operation hauling passenger trains, the k4 was the Pennsylvania railroad's main class of locomotive for passenger service. I really like the streamlined design of the certain k4 engines as they have a unique and interesting appearance.

Lots of “where is this?” questions … it took me forever to figure it out, and everything from the start to 2:01 was shot at Black Lane in Collinsville, Illinois - just east of St. Louis on the Indianapolis-St. Louis mainline. It was 70 mph territory - although I’m sure in steam days that speed “limit” was more of a suggestion. 😁 The final scenes are at Englewood, IL.

Ah, my favorite K4s the streamlined version. Nice to see it in action because it's not too often you run across footage of it. It makes you wonder that with all the sucess of the auto industry with retro designs that why don't they make modern trains with modern running gear and classic styling like these trains? Alot of people love the old designs and I'm sure it would help increase passenger rail traffic.

Just another view: Before they merged in Southern NJ, the Pennsy and Reading lines ran darn close to each other approaching Atlantic City for that to be called "the racetrack" also. It traversed flat wetlands, aka swamps, and that looks like the surroundings in this video. I have no idea what the topography is like near Crestline, OH. Just a thought.

The last scene beginning at 2:01 appears to be an eastbound leaving Englewood Union Station on the south side of Chicago (looks like New York Central's Englewood Yard in the background). I'd place the rest of the scenes somewhere in Indiana or Ohio. The longer trains were probably on the Crestline-Chicago main line; some of the shorter trains might be on the Panhandle line through Logansport, IN.

If they are on the racetrack, they are somewhere between Valparaiso, IN, and Crestline, OH. Unfortunately, I don't know the mileposts, but the racetrack is just shy of 70 miles long. The racetrack is more commonly known as the Fort Wayne Racetrack. It is so called because it is an unusually straight stretch of track., I formerly lived in Plymouth, IN, which is on the racetrack, which is nearly flat, too. The tracks are laid on fill to make them level, It was a two track mainline which has since been demolished and then partially restored because the Norfolk Southern didn't have enough trackage across northern Indiana. and western Ohio. There are no signals on the track, and the speed is limited to 45 mph, freight only. I read that they are currently running four trains per day eastbound only. The other tracks are the former New York Central which bears the brunt of the traffic, about 105 trains per day, and the former Nickel Plate which is highly limited because it is a single track mainline.

@dcoursey82 i agree, sorry about guys like als2001, but then i forget, it's all about the money. sad....for us, it's all about the trains. and, personally, as a writer and sometime photo/video artist, i feel that anything that is artful and done with love and attention should be shared with as many of us as can appreciate it. nobody really "owns" anything (that's a fiction); we're all in this together and we need to share more and stop acting like a little kid who says "that's mine, not your's"

For theses coaches, I believe they were the Standard "Tuscan Red" color scheme with gold lettering and striping. The Pennsylvania Railroad was always big on either Tuscan Red or Brunswick Green. Most of the time, the Brunswick Green was for locomotives only.

Thank you for that. I'm in Australia and for many years our New South Wales Govt Railways used Tuscan Red with a wide band along the windows of either Indian Red or a deep Beige. The streamlined C38 class locos here looked very similar to the K4s - another link.

The train at 0:50 was one of the Pennsy's prized trains, the Fleet of Modernism. It was a high class train, which is why all the cars were consistent with design and type, not to mention ornate, sporting 5 gold pinstripes along the length of each car and a thick, dark Tuscan stripe through the windows, ending rounded off on each end of the sides of the car. The engine that was pulling this particular train was the only K4s to wear that shrouding design, #1120. There were a few other streamlined K4's, but they were all a different design to this. Those were designed by Raymond Loewy, who designed locomotives such as the T1 & Baldwin Sharknoses, while #1120 at 0:50 was designed in-house by one of Pennsy's designers. To the colors: All Pennsy passenger cars were a Tuscan red, a dark maroon color, and had either yellow or gold striping and lettering depending on the era. All steam locomotives were painted Brunswick green, which was a very dark, almost black forest green, and had Tuscan red cab roofs and tender decks. The only known exception to that was a Tuscan K4s, whose road number escapes me at the moment. Diesels were either Tuscan or Brunswick, depending on service and era. Most electric locomotives were painted Brunswick with the exception of the GG1. If anybody has any other info or can correct me on anything I missed, please feel free to do so.

PRR #3768 is the only one streamlined K4s designed by Raymond Loewy and it is not shown in this vid, another 4 streamlined K4s #1120, 2665, 3678, and 5338 were streamlined in 1940 and 1941, as we can see (at least one of them) in this vid, were designed by PRR's work shop and mechanical engineers. By the way, The "Fleet of Modernism" was simply a term describing a marketing ploy, a modernization project for PRR's fleet in the mid 1930s which include purchasing of new lightweight pullman coaches painted with Raymond Loewy design two-tone red and golden stripe scheme and rebuild of old pullman coaches, it is not a specific Train's name. Thank you very much for uploading this very rare video showing how PRR mixing new and old car for their train-set!

As far as I know steam engines were very efficient, why railroads stopped using them?
@robertmohler9131

Because the United States and in particular the Appalachian region no longer has enough coal to be able to use steam all the time sadly.
@Askial_Osial
@Askial_Osial 3 жыл бұрын
It's mainly because of high maintenance costs, frequent water stops, you often have to have a boiler certificate for operation, and building up steam can take 6-10 hours while diesels can just start up and go, diesels had lower maintenance costs, and had more fuel efficiency.
@yuyuhaio
@yuyuhaio 3 жыл бұрын
@thunderstar86 Oil burns differently to a fire fueled by a bed of coal. If you look up documentaries on the process of transitioning UP 4014 to oil they detail the difficulties they had getting the firebox set up to burn oil and getting the nozzles configured in a way that evenly distributed the heat. So with that in mind, if any railroad were to consider switching to oil firing, they would have to convert every single locomotive's firebox to be able to use oil.
@whispofwords2590
@whispofwords2590 Жыл бұрын
@thunderstar86 because steam locomotives werent replaced because of fuel parchment. They were replaced because they were high maintenance machines that required a lot of supporting infrastructure, took a lot of time to keep in shape, and where mostly non standardize. Im not sure Id call steam locomotives efficient. They where powerful and fast, and if we still used them im sure modern version would be able to compete with diesels in terms of road performance, but they could never be as clean or as easy to take care of.
@rayhankazianga6817
@rayhankazianga6817 Жыл бұрын
Steam locomotives were less efficient than diesels, to the point where you could run 2-3 diesels for the cost of operating one steam locomotive. Today, that number would've increased by a lot.
