Track Description...
"As anxious to reach the next station as the commuters are to be at their places of work by the appointed hour, famous engine #460 with Train #982 and three cars leaves Lenola for Maple Shade, NJ on her morning Pemberton-Camden run. This is an "on train" recording. Listen for the "go-ahead" cab signal, the station start, and two grade crossing signals from her famous whistle. The throttle is then shut off, the safety valve pops, another grade crossing signal, and the train is braked to a stop to pick up additional commuters. An automatic gate and bell protect the train on the grade crossing at Maple Shade Station."

When Charles Lindbergh made his flight from NY to Paris, 460 raced an airplane to get footage of the flight to Manhattan and won. Top speed of that day was 115mph through Marcus Hook and Chester! Even PRR's mighty K4's couldn't go that fast.

Who would make up a claim that the Lindbergh engine would be operational and pull excursions on Strasburg and NS? It would be wonderful if that was the truth but the museum doesn't want anybody operating her or any of their locomotives sadly.

Listening to the audio, you can tell her whistle was getting worn as it has a noticeable overtone... #460 is looking very, VERY shiny right now, fresh from her $350,000 (and very thorough) cosmetic restoration (seriously, they even restored the cab signal/ATC box components).

Timothy Pavlic II interesting observation. At first, I thought the different tone on the whistle was due to the normal variances in whistle tone, (wind, boiler psi, etc). Upon hearing the recording again, you can tell this Atlantic has had better days.

@dcoursey82 I was reading "Pennsy Power" by Alvin Stauffer just now and came across this...."In October of 1938, a special test train consisting of sixteen cars, weighing 1005.2 tons attained a top speed of 92mph along the Fort Wayne Division racetrack using K4 engines 5354, 5362, and 3876 on various runs. This test was conducted for the Association of American Railroads to determine horsepower requirements for pulling trains at various speeds."

Actually the plane got there first of course, but because 460 had a film lab on board they were able to prep the video footage and literally hand it to the networks to be aired.

@ kidnormal Not "to the networks." There was no TV yet in 1927 and the footage was silent then, so it would have been kind of awkward on radio. But there were theaters in Manhattan and elsewhere that showed only newsreels, so screening national hero Lindbergh's triumphal return to D.C. first, ahead of the competition, would have been a profitable scoop.

@trainman551 The 127mph top speed record wasn't made by a K4 but by a Class E2 (4-4-2) engine #7002 in 1905 when she had to make up time carrying the Pennsylvania Special. Based on what I've researched, the highest speed a K4 was ever clocked at was 98mph.

Nice audio recording of the PRR E6 Atlantic! I’m curious to know what type of whistle is that on the PRR E6 Atlantic?

Late reply but it's the iconic PRR 3 Chime worn by the rest of the class. It sounds weird because it's an old and worn out whistle.

It would be sick if they could run her again on the Mt. Holly line through Moorestown and Maple Shade.

All of the G3 Pacifics used to pull the Blue Comet were scrapped between 1954-1955. Most of the passenger cars were scrapped or taken by NJ Transit. I think there is only one car left.

sadly, that's the case with most of our record claims. the one u.s. engine that got near the record was not an E2 atlantic, nor the monstrous PRR S1, but the milwaukee road F7 hudson. ran as fast as 125 mph dead and it was confirmed by cecil j.allen in his book. it was just .88 mph away from ole mallard.

I saw this post and found out that for #460 to run a series of excursions on the Strasburg Railroad and pull NS Excursions in the fall, I realize it was just an April fools joke. If so then why would #460 be operational again if it's some kind of joke? Just curious!
