PRR K4s #5410 at Brielle, NJ on the New York & Long Branch RR in August 1954. Recorded from the flying bridge of a 40ft Matthews Cruiser at anchor in the Brielle, NJ yacht basin. NY&LB passenger trains passed the mouth of the harbor on a bridge between Manasquan and Brielle.

This is a very late post, but this recording was made by the late Howard Fogg, and not John Prophet who was responsible for most of the extant PRR recordings. John used a wire recorder, but Howard used a reel to reel machine. The recording was featured on his excellent "Power of the Past" album, and was one of the first he ever made.

Weird how on these wire recordings the train seems like it's coming at the recorder multiple times.

Pentrex should get these archives, the sounds of the true PRR would sound much better than what they meshed together for their "steam across america" compilation.

To me, the K4 was not a very good looking engine, and yet...somehow it was..🤔

I'd say that they looked purposeful, and that's a unique kind of beauty almost unique to heavy industry.
