I'm hard pruning my Dwarf Schefflera bonsai that was planted in a 3D printed Vietnam style bonsai pot.
Hard pruning will shape the bonsai and hopefully get rid of the scale insect problem.

You are so lucky! I'm scared to put my tropical or even my houseplants out this year! Left my Evergreen trees outside and my Citronella on 21st for the first time, woke up 22nd to frost. I didn't have to scrape the windshield, came off with washer, but still! Supposed to be safe after the full moon... Not this year! I have some sort of little black bugs that kill the leaves. I've been fighting them for years. I even tried washing the plants daily. Only affect certain plants. Putting them outside usually helps.

Great video. I have to give up all my bonsai I have acquired (more like 5 or 6 not so it's not to bad I guess.) They were only saplings from around my house that kept getting mowed over. I figured I would gain skills with these. Then move on to nicer tree once I was more comfortable with what I was doing. It will still be a little sad. I have spent about year to two years on them. But I have learned so much.

@chrismiller12341

@@davidbydefault6333 yep. There is an abandon retirement home behind my house. I would take my little girl for walks there because we don't have sidewalks and it was safe for her. And they only mowed when they got a notice about the grass being to tall. So it would be a few months before each mow. So the little trees had time to recover before they got mowed again. It's like they got hard pruned every month or sometimes longer. I have one maple that has an inch thick trunk. But is only a few inches tall. I just yanked it up put it in some soil just to see what would happen. And it is doing so good. It took a bit at first but it has had tons of new growth. That is one I will try to take with me in the move. I also have a Japanese maple I got from my local library it was a seed that sprouted in the spring. And I knew they were going to mulch for a children's event so I "rescued" it. I didn't have high Hope's but it is doing very well too. It's grown two sets of leaves already.

@@davidbydefault6333 I am moving to another state and from a house to an apartment temporarily. I will not have the room for them. I have one special wisteria which is quite large (3 foot diameter canopy.) That will absolutely be going with me. It was my first bonsai and I got it in memory of my mother. (She loved wisteria she had beautiful one.) I know we will have a balcony. But I feel bad taking the whole thing over with my plants. I will also be setting up a small 20" diameter patio pond for a few guppies. (Guppies for mesquite control.) We are moving to a more tropical location. And my kids will love the frogs and lizards it will bring. I have a few two inch pots with the maples I mentioned that will be ok to come. But the few others I will plant behind my house were they will be free to grow.

I just got one of those. Haven't worked on it yet. Do they back bud pretty well? Did you defoliate for the aphids specifically or to get smaller leaves. If the former, will defoliation on this produce smaller foliage? Thanks!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
Yes to all! They back bud easily on older woody sections as long as the tree is healthy and vigorous! I removed the leaves mainly so I could see the branch structure clearly before pruning. The new leaves do come in smaller at first, but the size is mainly determined by the number of leaves and the health of the tree.

I find the cuttings do best in soil. Take the cuttings in the middle of summer when it is hot and humid out. They should start to grow new roots within a couple of weeks. Keep them watered well so they don't dry out.

I have had the worst luck with schefflera. I've killed 3 varigated ones by now. 🙈 I do not understand how you keep it alive long enough to make a bonsai out of it. It has never survived repotting for me. First the leafs will start getting black & fall. Then the stem will start getting black till the plant dies completely. What's so delicate with this plant!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
It may be the surrounding conditions that make your Schefflera's hard to grow. They need 4 hours of sunlight per day to stay really healthy and they also like warm humid conditions. The closer you get to greenhouse tropical weather, the better they grow!

Did you know that you have ants on the tree because they are eating the sugary excrement of the scale insects? In the tropics, there is a triple mutualism between plants, scale insects, and ants. In Cordia aleadora for example, they tree grows swollen nodes on the branches and scale insects live inside the nodes with the ants. Scale insects eat the plant, ants eat the sugary poop of the scale insects, and the ants protect the tree from predators like caterperillers. So, even though the tree sacrifices itself by letting scale insects eat it, they get protected by the ants!
