Fundamentals are sort of like love. Everyone knows it when they see it, but can never really describe it to others. Hopefully this vid helps with that.

It seems that depending on how the terms are defined: mix-ups, and influencing are the direct application of fundamentals. They are the thing you work on to improve. Influencing would be the myriad of strategies by which we make our opponent do something predictable. Or the way to understand what predictable ways our opponents will act in. Mix ups are the way you stop an opponent from being able to predict what you are doing. And there are subtle ways to mix up opponents, like drifting, timing.

I think I would mainly talk about two things: basic tech that is useful for the majority if not all characters to move how you want from just learning to short hop consistently to things Like a RAR ledge trumps and the buffer system. But also specifically talk about edge guarding, ledge trapping, tech chasing, 2 framing, juggling and catching landings. And then there is neutral which is more abstract since your opponent has a lot more options.

Could you do a video on your thoughts about picking a main versus picking a fundamentals character when first learning? Also, if people do pick a fundamentals character which ones you think are the best?
@red8eyed2moth
@red8eyed2moth 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great video and the detailed explanations :) My problem is that I often don't know what to anticipate because I think "my opponent could do many different things, how should I know what exactly he is going to do?" and that I can't quite imagine how my opponent is seeing me. If I shield a lot, I know my opponent will notice it and probably start to punish it with a grab or shield break but when situations get more complex, I'm often clueless about what my opponent might do and how he might react to what I'm doing. Do you have an advice on how I can work on this besides playing the game and watch videos about the various characters? Thank you in advance!
@Goosetavula
@Goosetavula 4 жыл бұрын
What helped me was playing all the other characters a little to see what all their options are and what problems I face as I'm using them. That way I can try to avoid doing things that I know I could handle pretty well as them and capitalize on the weaknesses I noticed I had as them.

For example I main link, I know that if I do a down air and whiff im basically dead because the end lag on that is a million years. That applies to most of his smashes too so I know that if I go up against another link we're both going to be looking for those moves with all that endlag to punish. As Lucina I know I can chase people off stage bc she basically has wings and fair can get people recovering high easier than low. So when I go up against a Lucina ill avoid telegraphing my recovery bc she can kill me easily.

You are interesting as always but I think you overshot the concept this time. I mean, I take this video as an another good piece of thought around neutral. But I also think that when people talk about fundamentals they mean something more basic. It is, in fact, the ability to do all your basic options whenever you want and it's not obvious that everyone can do it. Your character, as you say, is good to learn fundamentals because he relies on normals and, except maybe for its downB and sideB, he does not have ways to avoid playing a standard, fair, smash game. The character you are fighting against, on the other hand, while is not a top tier like zsamus by any means, plays his own game. I am a former dedede main and he plays so uniquely with six jump, the worst air mobility in the game, one of the best falling speed and a strange tool as the Gordo that you can be a decent, mid level player while missing a lot of basic stuffs. Sometimes "go to learn fundamentals" actually means go to learn how to short hop, ho to rising aerials, falling aerials and so on.
