A video on KZfaq from the year 2023 showing a beginner's guide to programming based on the Psion Organiser II. And I'm watching and enjoying it :) Btw, to check for a particular key press i tend to use the following: LOCAL KEY% ... KEY%=GET IF KEY%=%Y OR KEY%=%y ... but the syntax ( %y?!?) takes some getting used to, so i can quite understand people staying away from it.

Ha ha, yes I thought myself a little crazy when I started writing this series last year so I am glad you are enjoying it! Yes, you can use GET to grab the ASCII number of the character, I just find it easier to use the STRING so that's what I went with. You might also notice I haven't used the PSION II MENU instruction, works great on the II but the updated version on the 3 is not good so I decided to just ignore it ;-)

@@HandheldComputing Indeed :) i only recently got a Psion II LZ from England. I had one when i was a teenager and it got lost somewhere along the way. I think the cool thing about OPL is that you have simple access to a (admittedly very simple) data base. One can imagine the huge amount of boiler-plate code needed to do something halfway as simple using Java for example. You could probably write similar stuff using a bash script with a couple of sed commands, of course. I also recently bought a slide rule, because i never used one at school (we were already badgering our parents to get us Casio fx7000g's). It's interesting to think that the slide rule i got was made in 1970, so there are 18 years between it and the Psion organiser. then there are 35 years between the psion organiser and 2023---almost twice as long. Apart from constant connectivity not much has fundamentally changed in those 35 years.

@@EdouardTavinor Yes, OPL is a very simple language with easier syntax than Java. So maybe not as powerful but I think pretty much anyone could use OPL and a you say its relatively easy to read/write to a data file via OPL making it perfect for keeping and maintaining data. I guess slide rules were probably considered high tech when they 1st came out too. Sometimes simple functionality is the best way!

Thanks for the great video, Huw. :) It's great fun to learn how to program these old beauties. I've also bought an HP 200LX as well, so now I can mess around with the MS-DOS until the next episode, haha.

I recently bought a couple of rechargable 9v batteries that can be charged through a USB cable. We live in a time of wonders :) they work in my psion LZ

I'm glad you enjoyed it, does seem a little silly making this video series when its already 30+ years out of date lol
