Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at a comic about a "realistic" superhero... which really just means he's an insufferable moron.
atopthefourthwall.com
Originally uploaded September 3rd, 2012.
ORIGINAL INFO: A startling deconstruction of superheroes in the real world! …Or, just a really stupid black and white comic about an asshole who gets superpowers.
RUMINATIONS: The meeting, of course, had to happen at some point. The girl who played the role was the same age as Margaret was, though of course she’s aging now and it was written into a later episode that she can control her appearance.
There’s a little meta commentary going on within the words, though I’ll spare you the real-life details of what it refers to. Basically, I’m of the opinion that if you care about someone and they’re on a road that’s going to lead to disaster for them, you should do everything that you can to help them. Maybe they won’t listen, maybe they’ll eventually become toxic and terrible, but if someone you care about is in trouble… you should try to make them better. The attempt is worth it even if it ultimately fails. The thing was that there was no single thing that Linkara had to do for Margaret to restore his magic - the point of the journey was to lead to self-discovery and realize what he COULD become… what Holokara had already turned into. It’s that little wake-up call for Linkara to basically go, “Maybe think for a minute before you start boasting about how much better you are than everybody else, be a little more self-aware.”
Would everything work out? Well, keep watching, my friends…

I actually like to think of this comic as Death Note Light. Before you say that's ridiculous, take a look at the overall concept: A divine being decides to grant power to a random mortal because he's bored, and said mortal uses that power to his own gain. Sounds pretty similar to the concept of Death Note.

I always hate when some guy is like Super Hero's are stupid for all this reasons an then they go on to do the same things they listed as stupid. Even dumber is if you hate Super Hero's so damn much then why the hell are you writing a comic that is all about that culture and that they probably only decided to write because Super Hero comics are popular. So basically just trying to cash in on the market. All while saying no they are all stupid yet my comic my comic is great.

5:09 the reason most superheroes have there identity a secret is so fans of them wouldn't be swarming around them 24/7 constantly invading there privacy. And like Linkara said, supervillains would not be able to tell who is the hero. So in real life they would definitely have secret identities. Unless the hero either has an enormous ego or dosen't mind all the downsides of being famous.

Sorry thing is, comic books have been mocking superhero tropes almost as long as either has existed. Stan calls them long underwear characters in Amazing Fantasy 15. I think Gardner Fox mocked some of these during the JSA's first run. Despite this, everyone in fiction creation who : 1 - Has a woman punch out a man 2 - Has the horror antagonist prevail 3 - And mocks comic-book tropes in something related to comics ALL think that they are the first one to ever do so. And More's The Pity.
@autobotstarscream765

Rob Morris If the Horror Antagonist prevails, doesn't that make them the Horror Villain Protagonist? A lot of the "victims" in horror movies are just stupid evil people who exist solely to be murdered, so they're more like targets than protagonists while the monster murderer is the one that we usually follow and the one that usually gets all of the character development, making them a Villain Protagonist. This is why I stopped watching "modern" horror movies.

You make a good point, with which I mainly concur. That said, what I crit is the idea that having the killer/monster win is somehow a new and startling notion. Even some very old stuff had that. Yet I still see some horror directors, when they talk about their stuff, saying how 'they're breaking the Hollywood mold', when the last film I saw a horror baddie decisively beaten for good was The Frighteners.

Linkara is at his most depressed that he's ever been. Not because of a defeat by Lord Vice or Mecakara but by his own hubris, showing guilt and sigins of remorse. The girl in the magic gun, gives him advise to be mindful and think before he acts. These morals lead Linkara to improve for the better. Bringing us to the climax of this truly epic tale.

"I am the Narrator and I bestow upon you the power to narrate" Funny you should mention that but I remember the tale of "Bob" who's super power was to "Be there too". Long story short he had the power to be wherever something was being narrated, due to the player of the character not being able to make it to several session so scenes generally included an offhanded comment like "and Bob was there too". Suffice to say when the villain started discussing his evil plans Bob was there too. Meanwhile in the center of the sun...

The title is accurate in that the story is bad, but the main character is less an "ass" then "psychopathic asshole with gary-stu vaguely luck-based superpowers". Oh, and he drives a car with a screen that shows pin-up girls just to add tits to the book- oh I'm sorry "for distraction purposes".

5:15 eh... he's got a point about that, though. Hell, it's one of the most commonly brought up points when dealing with vigilantes like Batman and Green Arrow: they're trying to act like cops, but they don't allow themselves to be subject to the same rules. Cops don't have secret identities partly so that they can be held accountable when they fuck up. Jim Gordon *has* had supervillains go after his family, multiple times, but he doesn't have the luxury of hiding who he is. How are you going to hold Green Arrow accountable for the countless times he's straight-up tortured people if you don't know he's really Oliver Queen? Besides, how often do the loved ones of superheroes end up in the line of fire, regardless? Lois Lane gets kidnapped like 12 times a week. The Joker killed one of Batman's sidekicks and paralyzed another, and (apart from Alfred) the Bat-Family are literally the _only_ people Bruce gives a damn about in his personal life. No, the truth is that superheroes have secret identities to protect _themselves_ from the consequences of their actions, not to protect their loved ones. They have secret identities because they'd be _in prison_ for lots and lots of crimes, if they were public with their identities.

On the comic book... Well, it certainly lived up to its title... I know the website didn't exist back then, but watching this makes you think, "Goes to show that Fifty Shades of Grey wasn't the only fanfic that made it to publication..." On the AT4W storyline... I think that this part was very well done. Linkara was at some of his vulnerable moments, and said what a lot of people say when they are in a dilemma and aren't sure what to do. Sometimes you ask for help, but there isn't always a clear answer. What Margaret said is probably the best thing for him to hear... Nobody's perfect, but you just gotta try to do your best. Try to be good. Getting better doesn't happen immediately, it takes time... It's a very human thing. I thought S.S. Lee, the girl who plays Margaret, did a good job acting for this emotional scene. I guess if I have one question for Lewis, it would be, "How do you know her?"

@@PallysCafe Wolverine's blood doesn't even work that way. Only Archangel has been shown to through a simple blood transfusion grant regeneration to others. But if we're talking Beast, I assume the OP is talking about Hank's comicbook genius, where he is capable of doing pretty much anything so long as we slap a coat of soft science over the whole thing. But that's less a power and more a skillset, and one that is true for pretty much all comicbook geniuses and most other literary ones besides.

lol, I kinda knew that at the "The same gimmicks are repeated over and over" part of the complaints that the reaction was going to be "Yeah... I can't argue that one." Because even if you love comics, you do have to admit that's kinda true. Even characters I've created I can point to having a similar gimmick to others.
@DasNordlicht91
@DasNordlicht91 8 жыл бұрын
+SacridFire That's arguably true, but the real difference is in making these repeated gimmicks feel fresh and conceptually appealing to the point where the fact that it's already been done shouldn't be a point of contention.

+SacridFire Actually there's a simply counter to that: The same can be said of all ideas and concepts in all other mediums. Or in a sarcastic way: I even this comic I'm reading this list from is about a guy would realistically use his super powers like a normal person would. Now that's original! (Alan Moore's been doing that years before this comic was published) But yeah fair enough, though one arguable valid point out of ten isn't what I call a strong case.
@SacridFire
@SacridFire 8 жыл бұрын
Wildeye13 Point well taken, my friend. And yeah, I'm not saying no other medium is guilty of this (Hell I'm guilty of this all the time when I try to write) I know that by their very definition, tropes are something that we'll always be using, and yeah, having one valid point (arguably valid at that) did not make up for all the other incorrect or uneducated points he made. I just liked the joke is all. But I do agree with you.
@brandonc5061
@brandonc5061 7 жыл бұрын
While that is true, I would say that it is a consequence of storytelling. Subversions, inversions, and deconstructions will eventually become tropes themselves. It is a matter of bringing something new and/or interesting to the table I would say.

Sounds like the writer never met an altruistic person in their life. The whole thing with the parents, I almost wonder if there was more going on with this than just a story about a "normal" person with super powers.

RIP to Todd but his freaking list at the start about why he wrote this comic and why Superhero's are dumb is one of the most idiotic things I have ever seen. Like really people wouldn't use secret identities so I guess all the cops that go undercover just decide to use their real names because nobody would ever look them up notice they are a cop and go after their family and just kill them as soon as they learn the truth. It's not like when Peter Parker came out about being Spiderman that anything negative happened in his life ohh wait "One More Day" has something to say about that. Origins are stupid because who they hell wants to know where a character came from their backstory and why they are doing what they are. Yea because if I saw Shazam I so totally wouldn't want or need to know why or how a young kid magically can turn into a grown man with super powers and can use magic. Batman why the hell would I need to know why a millionaire who should have it all is instead miserable and has decided to fight crime dressed as a bat. Super Villains are so a crutch because comics would be so interesting if every week Superman was beating up some one of the mill criminal with no powers because wouldn't that be so entertaining. They all look the same yea so many of them all look like each other. Black Panther, Batman and Venom are all in black and look totally exactly like each other. Same with Green Arrow, Green Lantern and The Hulk.

I like the actress who plays the girl in the gun aka Margaret. She did an exhalent job and hope she's doing well. I also like her character design. By letting her wear white street clothes, she appears almost angelic. Like with Aplos the Wizard, I wish we could see even more of her. Heck, I could see her and Linkara hanging out and it'd sill make for a good scene. Still, I understand that it is Lewis's show, and that the actress is probably busy.

As a fan of hard rock and metal and hating censorship I'm unfortunately very familiar with tipper gore. Wife of Al Gore and founder of the parents music resource center, AKA PMRC.they basically wanted labels to "warn parents" about content in music, and is basically responsible for the " parental advisory: explicit content" stickers you see on CD's. They wanted mor draconian labels, warning of violence, drug references, sexual content, and even occult references. It was basically a giant witch hunt

Mike White As a fan of hard rock and metal and dislikes censorship i see your point but consider this. It's a parents right to control what there child listens too who they hang out and various other things until they move out it's a legal right and is has been one for quit some time. As a side effect off that right they should know when a song has things they might take offense too like violence drug references sexual content and occult references. Was it a witch hunt probably but the stickers are no different than an M rating on games and a R rating in movies it's needed censorship since. However it probably was a witch hunt it always is but every one of these kinds of witch hunt has a point parents have a right to know what there child is listening to watching or playing.

it was a bunch of senators wives telling us how evil our music is. I'm not against parents being informed. Hell, I'm an uncle and I'd be mortified if my niece was listening to cannibal corpse or ICP or something. personally, especially now I'm older, the parental advisory :explicit cont sticker" is just fine. But if you're going to slap a label on black magic woman that you'd slap on merciful fate for " occult themes" that's pretty ridiculous
