ORIGINAL INFO: The comic that dares to defend the sanctity of microscopic non-life!
RUMINATIONS: As always, I like to play with expectations.
A lot of people were assuming that the Gunslinger was responsible for the magic gun’s issues or Holokara’s “malfunction.” Thus he needed to be brought back into the story to indicate… nope! He doesn’t even know any of this is going on. From his perspective, he just got back to his ship thanks to the time dilation of travelling across different universes. Like Vyce’s ship, Jaeris’ house ship was designed to weather different universes. And of course since he was supposed to be a mirror of Linkara, he had his own AI pal to help him out. Much like how Nimue is based on the voice of Zen from Blake’s 7, I based the voice of Sierra off of Slave from Blake’s 7 - one much more subservient and only slightly bitter if the need arose. The backstory for that is explained in the next storyline, but that shot of the guns was also to indicate that the Gunslinger had been successful before in acquiring magic guns, so while he may not have been behind everything that was going on, he was still a danger to behold.
90s Kid’s talk about Rob Liefeld retiring was something that was in the news at the time… aaaand of course he’s still doing comics today. But then again, 90s Kid is also the type of person who WOULD react without thinking or looking ahead at what will likely happen.

Y'know, there's actually something to Al's "I don't even like eating plants" bit...given that he's from the future, it's plausible to imagine that in his time, all food is synthetic, and he's never eaten 'real' food before. That could be genuine insight into his character and his out-of-time status, that he's looking at our world from a totally different perspective. O'course, this is Marville, so I doubt there was any such though put into it; it was just an idiot spouting idiocy. But in competent hands, it could've been a genuine moment of character development.

I totally agree. If Jemas used more than 10 percent of his brain, what you said would've possibly worked in this story but sadly no. It's sad when WE can give better explanations to why plant and even molecule life is precious compared to this mook.

The funny thing is, had Jemas stuck to the miniseries being a parody/satire with a focus, it COULD have worked. I’m not sure HOW, but I think it COULD have worked. To be clear, I’m not defending any of the events in Marville, but I DO think there was potential in the initial satire concept.

Another thing that baffles me is that Lucy mock Al's vegetarianism yet she gets upset when air molecules die. Why is she fine with plants and animals dying but is upset when molecules die as well?

Fun fact: Everyone would die from lack of oxygen in the first segment as there wasn't enough photosynthetic biomass to produce enough oxygen in the air, especially not for something as big as a human

In a GOOD comic that could be a commentary on how different people see God in different ways (ie: old white guy with beard, a black guy a woman, etc.) but this IS Marville so I’m not willing to give it the benefit of the doubt

Apparently the weird formatting issue was because the comic was rapidly running out of funding. No funding for a comic like this? That's a stronger evidence for God than anything this story has.

I fell asleep watching the Marville review (no offense, I was just pretty tired). I woke up to linkara shouting that Spike Lee is the kingpin with no context and I thought I was still asleep.

POLE7645 actually, I believe there was a guy, I don’t remember the day or timeframe, that proved that life could be spontaneously generated under the right conditions. Conditions that early earth would have, like extreme heat and constant lightning. It doesn’t necessarily generate life, but it generates organic material necessary for creating life. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending this comic, and Bill Jemas probably didn’t know that, but I’m just saying.

If Holokara mentioned the Plot Hole, that means this is post-To Boldly Flee, which begs the question of where exactly that special falls in the timeline. Man, who knew a comic book review show could have such complex lore? I love it.

...I forget which comic of these Linkara considers worst, but I think this is the worst simply because NO. Lecturing on science when the author clearly knows NOTHING about science. Not to mention religion and philosophy, which is a dangerous topic in the first place but is so badly done here it's ridiculous. But why lecturing in a COMIC BOOK. It's probably the WORST medium to use for this! Also. MOLECULES. I'm with Linkara. What the hell?

It is. Confirmed in his top 15 worst reviewed comics list. This series took third place on that list, behind only Holy Terror and Avengers #200 (technically second place, since Holy Terror was *so* obviously the worst that he left it out of the list).

Supposedly Marville takes place on Earth-3131 (or at very least the future segments did; the past is apparently an alternate timeline). Hopefully both were destroyed (and not recreated) after the 2015 Secret Wars

My only explanation is that Bill Jemas had some blackmail material on someone, and was able to scrape enough money to just get by. Or, more likely, he was vice president of Marvel and could channel more money into his little vanity project.

He's a bit hung up on that punching a man's head into his stomach, although, to the comic's credit, it did actually set up for those sort of loony toons esque physical comedy. The previous issue had people karate chopping meteors.

I'm way too late to this argument, but here's what I think started to go down here with all this "poor microbes" bullshit Jemas decided to spew. Jemas still wanted this to be a parody comic. He really did. And he wanted to parody how people get religious reasons for becoming vegans or activists. So he decided on the most useless things to care about: molecules and microbes that make up the living and nonliving elements of the universe. And that was when the medicine and horse tranquilizers wore off, and he started to actively believe the parody he was writing until he thought "Yeah, why not? Let's make it pretentious as fuck. Besides, if it looks pretentious, people won't think it IS pretentious. And then they'll all subconsciously be aware of the poor microbes and molecules they destroy with their stupid breathing and walking and existing. Now where's that sketch of Jemas-Man? I'm gonna be a superhero in my own comic!"

5:13 'With help from Lucy, Mickey, Spider-Man and the Punisher, Al captures the Kingpin of Crime.' Swap out the main characters with Lucy from Peanuts, Mickey from Disney, and Alex from Madagascar, and suddenly this story becomes more entertaining.

I figure the "J" on God's Super Hero outfit is for "Jack" since that's what God goes by for the majority of this. At least, that's the best case scenario, because the other alternative is that it stands for "Jemas", which seems frightfully likely considering how arrogantly he acted about Peter David with issue #2. Jemas considering himself God because he was oh so clearly gonna win the "U-Decide" thing? I could see him taking that attitude.

Broad definition is even debated. There is a plant that can remember things, but again, we gotta eat something. While there are bounties and reward money for apprehending criminals to a degree, it doesn't work that way! I think the fish thinking that is kind of funny, ish.

This is really hard to watch. Not because the video is bad but because this comic is really, really, really. crappy. I was typing when Linkara said "A FISH, A FISH!". lol You do a really good job on these videos and have given me inspiration to finish Super Martial Artist, thank you.

That little jokey clip of Vyce in space going "Patience... patience..." is, on reflection, some horrible yet wonderful foreshadowing. I love it.

On the comic book... This is a new level of dumb. Every face Holokara made was just perfect. I can understand the stress that will play a big part in the next few episodes... The smile Holokara makes during the "shrinkage" joke is one of the creepiest things Lewis Lovhaug has ever done on this show... Mixing Sci-Fi and religion always seems like an odd choice. They just don't seem like they go together... That scene with the kids skinny dipping with God makes it look like the writer has a God fetish... On the AT4W storyline... I love the side characters. Watching Dr. Linksano over the years has been an interesting character, especially in his change from villain to comrade... 90s Kid is always a hoot. I wonder what Lewis himself was like in the 90s... Harvey is a very interesting character... Jaeris, the Gunslinger's plotline was very interesting. It had a good mystery going for it.

I dun' feel bad about eating things - they're at least put to good use for the trouble. I love cows n' chickens n' spiders n' bees an' Mothra n' the Angry Video Game Nerd... I did feel bad when I took the batteries out've the smoke alarm, tho'... beepin' it's last, helpless li'l beeps, struggling for life... Then I threw it in the trashcan and had the first good night of sleep in weeks. But... molecules aren't even living, though... they're simply clusters of atoms from various elements slapped t'gether... it's like taking two plastic boxes and slapping 'em t'gether, and claiming that the culminating object is alive... mlegh.

I have a question on canon law now. Because they don't like God being invoked to damn someone (even when the speaker isn't doing that, annoyingly), the use of 'goddamn' is considered a grave sin. Is there a category of sin for associating God with something this stupid? Is that one of those crimes against the Holy Spirit that cannot be forgiven?

I have been vegetarian all my life. It's easy for me because I was raised this way, so I don't MISS meat. And yeah, I don't like cows to get hurt, or chickens, but I realize that my stuff isn't "better" or more humane because meat substitutes impact the environment, too, etc. Not to mention that it's always monetarily feasible for people to follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. ...the amount of times I've been smugly told that "plants are living things, too" and that "they feel pain just the same" is agonizing. Al's an idiot. (But was there ever any doubt?)

I can’t help but think that the characters crying over molecules dying off might be Bill Jemas’s way of parodying the kind of logic pro-lifers use whenever they get upset about abortion clinics “murdering babies.” With Marville being Marville, though, he does so incompentently and the characters instead come off like, well, they’re crying over dead molecules.

So I'm currently reading through Alias by Brian Michael Bendis, and issue 10 has this same setup, with the text printed on the side of the pages in script form. The art style is even a bit similar. I have no idea why it was done this way , but at least Alias had the decency to print the text in a way that you can still see the art. I can't be sure, but I think Jemas was trying to parody that comic with this one.

Garrett Knisley Eh, the art in Alias #10 is a bit more watercolored whereas Marville #3 seems to have more of a film grain photoshop filter over its artwork. Plus, Bendis can get away with the set-up as his stories are heavy with dialogue and he's a far more competent writer than Bill Jemmas here...

What does it say about this comic that the fish's joke thoughts feel like they actually are the most profound things in it?At least there's a discussion to be had about how what seems to be a higher being to one creature is actually perfectly mundane to its own kind. It's at least better than "molecules dying!"
