Now here you go again, you say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?
It's only right that you should play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
And what you had
And what you lost
Oh, thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
You'll know
Now here I go again, I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself
It's only me who wants to wrap around your dreams
And have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
Dreams of loneliness
Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
And what you had
Oh, what you lost
Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
Oh, thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
You'll know
You will know
Oh, you'll know

When a system is Integrated, they can basically summon other alter's memories as if they were their own and remember what happened, the memory is just fuzzier and feels like it belongs to someone else and not you, like a movie, but you can still remember. The scene when Wendy was beating Marc and calling him disgusting hit me harder than anything else from the MCU. This show was wonderful from the first episode to the last and it portrayed DID better then even long term heroes like Hulk. The final episode did have a little issues with the “Marvel 3rd act” syndrome but overall truly a great show 9/10.

It honestly feels like the DID aspect of Hulk is basically next to non-existent in the MCU, even in Norton's film and that's pretty sad considering it opens up so many storytelling possibilities I don't love Ang Lee's Hulk at all and still think that film is a boring, sloppy mess but at least it sort of tried to address Banner's childhood abuse and the characterization of Hulk as a persona meant to encapsulate his trauma and grief

Like it's okay, the 3rd act can just be us saving a town, our family, a neighbourhood, or a nation. It doesn't always have to be "omg so dramatic humanity's gonna end & there's a bunch of chaotic CGI to prove it". For example I'd like if Moon Knight just saved Egypt and became a symbol for it along with his wife; other Avengers wouldn't know about the conflict bc it happened far away from where they normally operate. For me the mythological aspects of the show in contrast helped to demystify DiD. It played against the narrative of Marc/Steven's personal arcs by grounding it, where in other stories mental health struggles are glamorized or made overdramatic, and even though it didn't always work for me on a technical storytelling level, I appreciated the juxtaposition for making mental health the priority of the show over the fantastical superhero aspects.

@@firstlast9846 This isn't a case of "being victim of one own stupidity" or "taking it too seriously" because for starters, the movie takes itself seriously, but most importantly: representation in media is very important, specially for marginalized folks. When people with mental illness are represented time and time again as antagonists it sends a message to the audience, even more so when the audience doesn't spend much time in their real lives with people with mental illness. I don't have DID nor am I a professional in the field, but the critique of being a bad representation can still be valid. This type of trope that repeats where marginalized groups are represented as villains it's common, old as hell, and has been used to contribute with the marginalization of those groups. @@zackarybaker9159 the problem here is that you're assuming all instances of plurality are inherently negative. Many systems coexist among the headmates. This video doesn lt even touch on that and instead only presents the "people only suffer" narrative, similarly to how organisations like Autism Speaks frame autism as a necessarily broken or intolerable state of being. This video clearly did not take any plural viewpoints into account, nor talk to any systems and only pursues the most basic (and damaging) perspective on DID. This is the kind of thing that others systems (a group of people sharing a body, like Marc, and Steven) and paints us as simply "poor people suffering this terrible disorder." Not everyone is troubled or burdened by their headmates. Integration is NOT a cure-all.

It's kinda sad Bruce Banner/The Hulk kinda got shafted with their DID subplot in the MCU. I remember Oscar Isaac mentioning that outside of the obvious Midnight Suns potential crossover with Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and others, he would love to crossover and do things together with Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/The Hulk, because of both Bruce and Marc having DID and the potential chemistry between them. I'm still a little salty that Bruce and Hulk's emotional journey basically occurred off-screen before Endgame. The MCU never really addressed Bruce's backstory, or incorporate any of his comic counterpart's plot points with childhood abuse and development of DID. The gamma radiation simply gave Bruce's other identities a way to physically transform Bruce's body when taking over, not the source of his DID.
@SquirrellyFries

Even if comic Bruce has DID (which I believe is a more recent retcon), it hasn't been established in the MCU that this is the case. Probably not the best to compare a real-life disorder to a situation that's obviously super sci-fi and fantastical.

I also wonder if that sort of language might glamorize the disorder a bit; thanks to the internet, we already have some people (like the "tulpa" community, ick) that seem to be enamored with the idea of having "headmates." That being said, I think you can recognize your experience as "legitimate" and use words to describe it, and still hold that said experience doesn't accurately reflect reality (If that's what you're worried about.) You aren't actually multiple people, but that doesn't mean you can't experience the world AS IF you're multiple people. No shame in not being normal, we all have to make the best of what we're given. I only just got to reading these comments. They're nice. Since this random and hopefully disconnected thread is the only place I've really ever shared this publicly, I'll just describe what is being experienced: It's hard to express myself since half the time what happens in my head is too many different immediate feelings and thoughts and I'm not sure which is really "me". I feel huge disassociation from reality and I always feel like I'm looking through the world down a long tunnel. Like this body isn't mine. My thoughts are always shouted from different perspectives loudly in my head and they don't feel like they belong to "me" either. It's like having an endless stream of thought, except there are three of them. For a while my psychiatrist thought I was exhibiting very early bipolar syndrome or schizophrenia, but the ability to clearly and distinctly say "I am aware it is in my head, I just don't recognize my own self or thoughts as my own" basically sealed the diagnosis... And yeah, it bothers me to talk about it or see people act like "wow it must be interesting to be that way." It isn't. and those people don't realize they are talking to someone who is experiencing this, because I try exceedingly hard to hide this in my day to day life. I wrote a bunch more but obviously, I'm of multiple minds of how I should follow up my original comment. I think leaving it here is probably for the best. Thanks for the positive responses. They were better than some of the real world responses I have gotten if I'm being honest.

Here's my attempt as someone who used to have DID to clear up what some of you are possibly wondering, which is "why are there folks in the comments arguing about the word integration" So, let's take a step back from whether this video and the show portrayed integration well. And to be clear, I haven't seen the show. I'm not disagreeing with those bits. I also think you did a fantastic job, and that this show does a fantastic job portraying DID (from the bits of it I've seen when my roommate has it on in the background and the general reaction of both folks who have/had DID who have watched it and folks who have never dealt with DID and gained a great empathy by watching it. That being said, the part about integration is a bit off, but don't beat yourself up over that because DID can be extremely confusing to folks who haven't personally dealt with DID watching people talk about DID. Yes, the treatment for DID is integration. That's true. But what integration /is/, varies. Although plurality is a thing (see the website morethanone), DID is a specific kind of plurality and has distinguishing characteristics that make it extremely hard to deal with. And it does have to be dealt with because ultimately it is a reaction to trauma and while it may help in the moment, once someone is out of that trauma it becomes maladaptive. For some people, integration in the sense of "we all become one person" is the desired goal, and it is the best thing for them, and it helps. But the problem with integration as a "one size fits all approach" (which is how it has been used historically), is that /plurality isn't the problem, disassociation is/. And when it comes to therapists and psychs administering treatment, sadly you do sometimes see "I'm cured" become "oh, I'm back in the doctor's office 15 years later because I learned to hide plurality but not actually stop disassociating". It's a bit hard because the disorder was originally called Multiple Personality Disorder, but I think the new naming really says it all. The problem is disassociation, not plurality. And so, while for some folks integrating into one person is what solves that, for others it is existing in a state where disassociation is no longer the go to coping mechanism, where folks take responsibility for what they do and for their own emotions and don't offload them onto other alters or hide information. /That/ can be integration as well, and for some people, becoming a finely tuned collection of individuals who work well together is better for them than becoming a single person. As I said at the start both you and Moon Knight did an incredible job talking about this here, but I wouldn't feel right if I didn't leave my two cents in the comments.

I'm not sure I understand the Covert vs Overt breakdown you chose for the montage. Doesn't make much sense, and it's actually a simple concept. Overt systems are the systems you see on TV, where an outsider can easily tell us apart from each other, be through accent, posture, etc. Covert systems pretend to be the same person, we construct a persona of what we expect people to see of us and hide behind it, whether actively or subconsciously, and people can only tell who we are if they know us well. Also, Fusion is not Integration. Integration is a medical term used to describe the way DID is medically treated, it used to be by forcing the alters to fuse decades ago, but they realized that didn't always work and sometimes systems stopped seeking treatment because of it, and they started focusing on comunication between alters and memory sharing instead. Because typically, if alters in a system can fully communicate with each other and share memories, they can work together, and if fusion is the option for that system they will naturally fuse, and if it's not, they will live a better life with each other.

8:40 I didn’t mind the exposition because I, like most white people, know little about Egyptian gods. If the show hadn’t taken a break from the DID stuff to explain that, I’d’ve been completely lost. I did better keeping track of the plot than my mom, both bc I think too much about movies and I’m used to the wacky complicated nature of comic book arcs. But MK is complex in a different way. I like the exposition, but I appreciate that you don’t. That’s a common sentiment. Plus, you can only handle so much heartbreak at once. We spend two eps feeling sorry for Steven, then two with him and Marc on a fun adventure. Then they die and we get a big ugly dump of childhood trauma exposition, and the finale sends us off with some feel-good cooperation between altars, the Scarlet Scarab, and a clean comeuppance for the bad guy.

As an integrated personality, I'd akin it to finally sitting in the same boat and deciding to go the journey together instead of doing senseless boat races all the damn time. The crew is still there, I hear them chime in, but I don't *have* to act on it or even show it anymore. They rarely front, most of the times more as a... Celebration of them doing well? They all have "jobs" internally, so if they do well on their mental tasks, they get rewarded. But I still couldn't imagine not having my crew. They're my boys. We took care of each other. - So watching Moon Knight was really interesting and cathartic at the same time. (For me and the whole crew I might add) I think something as "outlandish" as DID / OSDD is really hard to grasp in how it REALLY feels, how day-to-day life really works then, and understanding that it goes through so many phases in life can be quite challenging. All the more praiseworthy is Moon Knight therefore, having such a stellar approach. I dunno if everyone with DID / OSDD is like this, but when I hear that some kind of media will tackle that subject, I instinctively groan and roll my eyes, but I still give it a fair shake. Never been more glad to have done that than with Moon Knight. :) Brilliant, empowering, but also showing the gritty reality. I never had amnesia during switches, so even I was shown a new perspective! I was thrown off too by the start of the show haha (I actually have OSDD, not DID, meaning DID minus amnesia)

As someone with diagnosed DID, Moon Knight is one of the most accurate examples of representation (not minding the fantasy elements). I feel like the fantasy elements make DID seem less otherworldly as some people think, in comparison.

The same question from childhood echoed in my mind when watching Moon Knight, as scenes of the mother's abuse mirrored what my stepmother had done to me, and it was always "Why isn't Dad doing anything" Even as an adult, I don't have a complete answer, and it hurts my relationship with my father when I remember it. And in the show I felt a lot of anger at the Father character for his unwillingness to step in for his son, just as I feel anger at my Dad. In both cases, I think they were afraid to disrupt their family, while trying to be supportive of their partner, but in both cases I nonetheless feel the failure to properly protect their son. I just wish Dad would've blocked her path, just once.

We've not been able to watch the show yet. We tried. We got through the first episode and bawled our eyes out. Seeing how horrible Marc was to Steven was deeply emotionally triggering, it broke our heart. And the association of DID again with extreme violence and murder was deeply upsetting to come from Marvel, which is a franchise we've loved dearly since the start of the MCU. It felt like a trusted friend stabbed us in the back with regard to representation. We've had people suggest to try watching more. We might try, but while reviews show that it might be decently accurate to the experience of DID, it also seems very triggering for us.

we're a questioning system. moon knight is so validating to watch. our trauma that we struggle to believe is or was 'bad enough' is very similar to moon knight's. we were blamed as a child for our mother's miscarriage and were hit and pinned to the floor during flashbacks to when we witness domestic violence. i love this show so much

This video kind of gathers people with experience with DID. It's like the internet equivalent of a support group, you're going to have a lot of people there who share a common trait. Also, about 1.5% of the global population has dissociative identity disorder. In comparison, only 0.33% of the global population lives in Australia. That's way more people then I thought honestly.

Even if there is not a lot of us, we tend to congregate on DID videos to participate in discussion because not as many people will try to shut us down or misunderstand us in these spaces. DID is already isolating, none of us want to be made to feel more isolated by rude or dismissive comments from people who do not understand nor care about DID.

Can we all agree that the mother was a literal piece of shit for putting that weight and trauma on their child. As an adult, you should be able to evaluate, assess and see the situation for what it truly is instead of hiding and blaming others for what happened. Like when she said, "You made me do this," no, you have complete freedom and responsibility for your actions. I sense that was just her guilty conscious projecting. Maybe feeling that she could've done something. I know it's just a show, but that hit close to home. I have experiences with asshole parents who refuse to acknowledge that just because you birth someone doesn't mean it absolves you from wrongdoing.
