I'd be a little hesistant to paint the aluminum pieces. The block block is fine, not the head though aluminum really helps reduce heat when fresh air hits it with the paint on it forms a barrier just like grime I'd think, guess we'd have to see some comprehensive controlled tests to be sure don't know if anyone has done that though never seen anyone paint an engines head before.

Keep the timing cover on, make a small window so you can see the cam gears. The timing cover will protect the belt and anything that's in the general location. My 02.

She's gunna rip guy! I ended up putting a 5.3 in my Z because of budget constraints but the JZs sound perfect in s30s

Unless the cover provides some sort of function I'd leave it off because the red gears look amazing. Nice video as usual. Your dedication to the project is inspiring.

So the cover keeps debris ie rocks from getting into the belt teeth and gears and doing damage or jumping time. Other than that nothing special ;)

Actually if you hit something your timing system grinds into what ever is in front of it, ground a big hole in a nearly brand new coolant hose on my 7m when I hit a deer, I'm a lot more cautious driving now but it could still happen again. A deer could be a human as well or a rock or anything giant around a dark blind corner when you're cozy tired and unexpecting. It definitely adds some additional reliability during wrecks crashes or hits. Had the timing cover been on that hose would have been unharmed. Sure the hose is cheap like $8 but still as a comparison keeping it on is free. Also could help you drive the car back home in such an event with little to no damage.

If you can, save up for a clear cover set so you can still see the pulleys and protect them from debris (if they make them that is).

It would be cool if u could use the AC to cool your intercooler if you can like they did the demon charger

If i had and couldt chose, with or without the cover, i would say without, the red gears seriously did make the 1jZ Looks sooo good, and new paint did the job, looks almost like a brand new motor hahaha, Awesome man! Love the build and your videos!

sooner or later some piece of junk will find its way up to the belt area. Cover should help prevent and damage to belt in that event. It looks very nice but you will not be looking at it while driving.

Did you replace the head gasket? Just wondering. About to crack open a 1JZ VVTi myself.
@StewartMotoring

I didn’t. I don’t think that is really necessary for some preventative maintenance that I did. Sure you can do it but not part of the normal maintenance before running the motor

Will painting over the exhaust ports where the manifold gasket is supposed to go affect the sealing of it?
@StewartMotoring

Most likely not, but just in case I used some brake cleaner and cleaned the port mating surface

I bought it about a year ago on eBay, it was the ONLY rear sump 1j vvti on eBay. So I had to swoop it up.
