The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker at Kelvedon Hatch, in the Borough of Brentwood in the English county of Essex, is a large underground bunker maintained during the Cold War as a potential regional government headquarters. Since being decommissioned in 1992, the bunker has been open to the public as a tourist attraction, with a museum focusing on its Cold War history.
The Kelvedon Hatch bunker was built in 1952-53 as part of ROTOR. ROTOR was a programme to improve and harden Britain's air defence network. It was constructed by Peter Lind & Company of London who still trades today. The bunker was a hardened (three level 'R4') Sector Operations Centre (SOC) for RAF Fighter Command. It was to provide command and control of the London Sector of Fighter Command.
During the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and early into the 1990s, the UK government (Home Office) maintained the bunker as an emergency regional government defence site. Eventually in the early 1990s when nuclear threat was seen as diminished, the bunker was sold back to the farming family who had owned the land in the 1950s. It is now a Cold War museum and retains many of its original ROTOR and RSG/RGHQ features.
The bunker is built 125 feet (38 m) underground and the entrance is through an ordinary-looking bungalow (a standard ROTOR 'Guard House') set amongst trees. The inside of the bungalow leads to a 100-yard-long (91 m) tunnel entering the R4 at its lowest floor (of three). Above are two more floors, the 'hill' which covers it, and a radio mast some distance away.
The bunker was able to accommodate some hundreds of personnel (the numbers changing as function and form varied over the years) and could sustain them for up to three months. The bunker has air conditioning and heating (using the original ROTOR AC-Plant but replacing the original coolant with a more 'modern' type [c.1980s]), its own water supply (mains water and its own deep bore hole) and generators, and was equipped with many types of radio equipment, protected (EMP) telecommunications, teleprinter (MSX) networks and various military systems: MOULD (system to provide communications between Regular Army, TA Battalions and the Army District and Regional Headquarters) and CONRAD (radio government communications systems post nuclear strike) etc.
By 1992 the bunker was no longer required, so was decommissioned and the land was sold back to the original owners, the Parrish family. It has now been renovated and made into a museum and tourist attraction; many locals appreciate the irony of the many brown tourist road signs in the area, clearly directing people to the "Secret Nuclear Bunker". The BBC TV show Top Gear featured the signs.[2]
The bunker was used as a "Killer's Location" for The Murder Game. Both the living quarters and the operational zone were set up for the "Killer's Game" in the finale. It also played a significant role in an episode of New Tricks titled "The Queen's Speech", first broadcast on BBC1 on 20 October 2014.
In 2010 the independent British post-apocalyptic/horror film S.N.U.B! was filmed in the bunker.[3]
The 2016 full-motion video game The Bunker, which uses live-action footage, was fully filmed inside the bunker.[4]
In recent years the land surrounding the ex-secret Nuclear Bunker has been used for Obstacle racing events, provided by the 'Nuclear races' company.

I've shown my Dad this video, he loved it as it brought back many memories of him being in the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service. When he passed out of training, he was posted to Ongar which was a few miles up the road. Every few months the station, along with the police and ambulance would have to visit the bunker, and in doing so he had to sign the OSA, so he couldn't, even now tell me what he saw, heard and did - but he did say that they conducted "Exercises"... Ongar fire station, along with the police station were equipped with WB400 (Handel) attack warning speakers. When he was on nights, he used to hear it beeping away, and frequently to test they were working correctly the Home Office used to send a message down, the firefighters had to write said message down, complete with time and date and send it back. He said that the Bedford "Green Goddess" fire engine wasn't there for deployment in case of attack as all rescue effort would have been done by the county fire brigade, so would have been bought by the museum as a static exhibit. My dad says thank you, and enjoyed it very much.

I used to provide and maintain the private wires for the radio and computer links in the late 80s early 90s around London and the S/E. Most of the bunker entrances were in plain sight, some even disguised as street furniture. I used to get job sheets with some very strange instructions for entry. Great days because not even your managers were allowed to know where you were, lol. P.S. The "bomb indicator @ 21:48 looks like an E/O Telephone cable pressure monitor. All Exchange side cable to cabinets and straight to Distribution Point cables (E/O's) would be pressurised to keep water out. Fun fact, in the day we used to like to keep the Exchange guys on their toes, so we used to have pressure gauges and Schrader valves in the street cabinets, so when one was a bit bored waiting for the Exchange to answer, you used to give a quick push on the valve which would set off the pressure alarms in the Exchange, that used to wake the lazy buggers up. 9 times out of ten your call was then answered 😁

This probably connected to the one in Nantwich, Cheshire, that one is pretty cool inside too all set up like this one but goes down 3 levels. I can imagine Jordan being fascinated with this, my son is high functioning autistic and he loves anything like this and anything to do with the world wars. The one in Nantwich is also ready to be reuterlised if need be too. Unfortunately it is only open during the summer months and not sure if has even been open since you know what. I love stuff like this too, it's really interesting x

Looks like you sorted and it's running... it popped as I was watching you were telling us it wasn't on tonight.... Hmm my internet seems to tell me things late a lot recently... one day late for this and about the same with Lost battlefields with Tino too... still not seen a one on the I bought a ghost town which is usually on a Sunday.. At least I now see you did two others I got no notification for either... Fire engine is a Green Goddess. Some still around when needed too... Now it's nice to see a few WWII Schmeisser and an AK 47 in the armoury, so much better than the Sten or or Thompson... lol When it comes to the video they are playing at around the 31 minute marker, I remember watching those as a kid when they were still very worried as it wasn't long after the Cuban Crisis.... Growing up with that, changes many a lifestyle.. no point buying a house or getting married... go have as much fun as you can before the enemy blows everything to pieces is what we did instead.... Might not have a house, and a wife, but I had a lot of women and a lot of kids... Man, did I have a lot of fun! (still much better video and advice than the Yanks got... type in Duck and Cover into a browser some time)

Er...it wasn't the Prime Minister's bunker. The PM would stay in Whitehall (either in the Rotundas or MOD North Citadel - later in PINDAR) and 'go down with the ship' when London was hit with multiple nuclear bursts. The new PM would then be the senior surviving PYTHON Minister, dispersed to a remote part of the UK. Ignore the nice sign on the door saying Prime Minister.

Love the 60's era"Green Goddess" (Bedford) hiding away in the shelter. Shame her bum isn't on view. During my time in Paderborn W. Germany (1980-90) they basically became the same as UK Fire appliances. Just decked in green. Anyone remember the Fire brigade strikes? Possibly the last time Green Goddess' were seen on home soil in peacetime... Looking back now, it's strange but find Cold War almost comforting. Weird eh! Both mum and dad serving British Army in Germany. NBC drills at school! Mirror to check for car bombs before we got in. SOXMIS, BRIXMIS, IRA and Stasi (Ministry for State Security) aka East Germany secret police or "filthy spies". There's still videos around on KZfaq instructions on how British Military can travel to East Germany. The Cold War Paranoia outside of Garrison mixing as we did with West German people... It's never gone away. We are entering a new phase or Cold War 2. North Korea, Russian poisonings, Chinese Illegal Space Station! Hypersonic Weapons testing... Tempest and the new AUKUS Submarine deal hmm...

The beeping is so that you know the tanoy is working and operational, nothing else. Still used today in some facilities.

But you do know about the warning sound alert system... it did have different pips and solid tone when at war. It wasnt just a pip to let you know tannoy was working. They broadcast that signal. see here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNZ-g7Oa18XIZHk.html
