On February 26, 2013, David Byrne (author, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, cofounder of Talking Heads) and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (drummer, DJ, culinary entrepreneur, member of The Roots) came together for a one-on-one conversation. They discussed what we're taught--and how we learn--about music, and the way that our ideas shape the songs we create and consume. ?uestlove is teaching a course on classic albums at NYU this spring. This exciting Public Forum event was co-presented by NYU Skirball Center.

I like when David was talking about music being taken away. When I was little, I wanted to be a musician. I told my parents and they told me essentially that it wasn't for me, that I would never make a career out of it. I guess they loosened up a bit, because by 6th grade I had joined the band. Music education is so important, I think. Never tell your kids that they can't be a musician. Instead, reinforce their dreams.

It's funny to hear musicians say, yeah, I thought about classical music as an 18 year old but decided on hip hop. It's like people start talking about jazz without knowing the first thing about it. These pros know all the genres of music like punk, new wave, hip hop, etc. and then lump hundreds of years of Western music into one jump of 'classical'. No mention of Early Music, Baroque, Classical, Modern. A lot happened between the two 'classical' composers mentioned in this talk, Mozart & Stravinsky. You can study any one of these periods and never get close to the bottom. . There is a kind of hypocrisy to be a snob about so many things like living in NYC, food, etc and then say you have to be totally egalitarian about music & you can't be a little snobbish in saying that it's pretty damn hard to write any choral music that approaches Bach.

even though ?uest seems to get a lot off his chest (almost like someone bleeding as a constant artist should be) and Byrne seems out of his element (like UFO swimming through air) the most industrious aspect must be the public school projects which both appear adamant about. It seems as though the reason David feels successful is simply because he wanted to play music and the money came as a result. Money did'nt equal happiness for David and on the flipside ?uestlove seems to feel unsuccessful because he made music to make money. All I hear from ?uest during this conversation is about money. It does not feel that making music is a passion for ?uest.

crimsonphilosophy, yeah he's not a good drummer to the musically challenged. a fine musician, seems to know what he is and isn't. I'm thinking you might say charlie haden wasn't a good bassist...

David Byrne has Asperger's Syndrome, so you guys really shouldn't be surprised at his awkward socialization.

I don't believe David Byrne has been diagnosed with asperger's, David byrne inadvertently describes himself as an introvert in the begginning of his book "how music works". Mr. Byrne says he probably has or had a mild form of asperger's but he never said he was diagnosed with the syndrome, I highly doubt he has asperger's though I am no expert in the subject. He is deffinitley an introvert and his social anxiety and high inteligence or at the very most introspective and thoughtful nature are all things introverts seem to have in common. If you were to look up what is known about extroverts and introverts you may come to the same conclusion, I don't know for sure. either way ?uestlove and david byrne are amazing!

ImaginaryGuns Take it from those of with Aspergers, it’s always been glaringly obvious that he does. He’s gotten more comfortable with age, probably due to a decrease in anxiety & learning more coping techniques in public due to life experience. Also, he has said he has been diagnosed in later age. I don’t know why people always say he is self diagnosed, he’s not. Other people said he was, he said he probably was or was a “little” autistic, then he got diagnosed as having Aspergers. I think because he’s of an older generation he always mentions that he’s “high functioning”, like he doesn’t feel he has a full claim to the title because he’s not what people imagine autistic to be, & he said feels he doesn’t really feel like he has it anymore (which is not possible of course, but I get what he means) mainly because he doesn’t struggle as much in his older age.
