This is exactly the advice I gave to my kids over the years whenever they had to prepare for a presentation. I learned it myself the hard way, and I feel vindicated by your expert advice! As this advice is not always easy to accept (runs contrary to beliefs that public speaking is about skill and eloquence), the argument to make with beginners is to remind them that the reason they're speaking is to convey knowledge, not to perform. And the easiest way to focus on content is to ask yourself, how would I tell the same thing to another person, or a couple of friends? By putting the focus on content vs. form, it reminds beginners that the challenge is simply to explain to other people what they know, have studied, or learned as prepared for the presentation. It opens a path where concerns about appearance may be kept at a distance (never totally removed) and provides greater confidence, as eventually, no matter what, they do have something to share. So the key questions anybody about to speak in public should ask themselves are: Why am I speaking? Because I know something I worked on. Why are they listening? Because they want to learn something which otherwise they would have to study themselves. What matters most to me and them? Same thing: Content, information, knowledge. What doesn't matter to them one bit: Whether I'm a great speaker. After that, the work can start!

You ask frequently what conversations should be dissected. It's a few years old but the conversation between Jon Stewart and Jim Cramer is always worth another watch.

I enjoy your ability to disect the intericasy of conversation. I recently had an old feed of the former press secretary come across feed. I watched and the first thing that I noticed was her ability to communicate clearly and sharply. I was wondering if you would compare her vs the current press secretary. Or at least decifer why the former was such a powerful speaker.

Great advice Alex, i cant agree enough with the similarities between conversation and presenting. I also coach public speaking and emphasise this point all of the time. You're having a conversation with lots of individuals and the audience as a whole, its finding the balance with conversation and presenting. Some good points here that will give people some self belief. Really like your style! Thanks

I love your videos man, I really do! I understand you’re a communication prof and it’s what you do but there’s something about the way you come off that’s naturally comforting and informative. When I think about applying tips you’ve given it takes a lot to incorporate them into my communications…but you’ve got them burrowed into your DNA it seems, it’s as if you’re just inherently a smooth communicator. Practice makes perfect I guess.

Hi Alex, greetings from Dublin, Ireland ! Really enjoying your content. Fascinating to see what kind of implicit behaviours and strategies people use when they are speaking in public. I actually find your videos quite calming because you don't shout at your audience the way a lot of KZfaqrs do. You present your material in a very calm, considered and positive manner. Have you ever considered making ASMR content ?

Good insights about how to differentiate the skills according to the audiance, but also if you have strenghts from one side how to stablish that advantage for the other side. At any case at sort of connection is needed with the audicence, then to adjust the speech, body language and emphasis for offering the value expected. Sailing among audience expectations and own thoughts for conveying properly the message. Thanks for sharing and encouraging exceling through story telling (mind and heart).

@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 2 жыл бұрын
You know, Sanjay, I've given that a lot of thought but those two terms have very few differences, if any. I might do a video in the future but I'm not sure. The only real difference you'd see is that we rarely describe speeches of special occasions or ceremonial speeches/messages as "presentations." If you'd give a eulogy at a funeral, we would not normally call that a presentation. If you gave a formal speech at a graduation (ceremony), then we'd not typically call that a presentation. But, aside from special occasions and ceremonies (which are among the rarest types we'd be expected to deliver), most other times the words public speaking and presentations are interchangeable.

"Strangely", I feel like I'm better at public speaking than having a normal conversation. Being pretty good at the former, everyone automatically assume that people like me have good conversation skills and hence nobody talks about it. That's very true. Many people have that experience. I know the comedian Jerry Seinfeld has said to his large crowds, "I can talk to ALL of you. But, I can't talk to any of you." His gestures clarified that he meant it was easier to talk to the audience than to have a one-on-one conversations.

Interesting video. I thought while watching, maybe you can help me. I really dont like to talk. I spend a lot of my time in silence. I m a good listener, bad speaker. Last week I'd a job interview. The result was horrible. I wasnt able to put 2 sentences together, even for simple questions. Although when I've internal dialogue, which is the only way I express myself, I feel like I m ok, the minute I open my mouth, my mind turns upside down. I cant organize my thoughts which results in unable to express myself properly.
