At the moment there is a shortage of the Transitions helmet shield for the Shoei RF-1400. They are on back order everywhere. So, when this Puentemys CWR-F2 Compatible Photochromic Shield showed up on Amazon I decided to give it a try. After all it was less than 1/2 the cost of the Transitions shield. At the very least I figured it could be a stand-in until the real one came back on the market. See, I actually ride every day starting in the dark and ending in the bright Texas sunshine, and changing visors even once a week is once too many. The main question I had was is it any darned good?

Thank you. Great review. I was thinking of buying that one. Right now I carry a spare visor in my backpack and charge it out

I find the same issue with the tab to snap shut. The tab is slightly larger than the original,but it’ll snap down softly. You won’t hear or feel a click, but it closes.

Interesting to know how it works out. I had hoped one might be available for my Arai XD4 but no luck.

It’s crazy that someone making and shipping this knock off from their apartment has more stock then a company that makes millions with factories. I would be kinda embarrassed if I was shoei
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat Жыл бұрын
Not sure if they are making it in the apartment; maybe they are just the transshipment outlet here in the US to speed up deliveries. But your point is well taken. If these visors last as long as the OEM photochromic ones then yes indeed, shame on Shoei for their pricing. Optically they are just fine so it’s just longevity to test now, and that takes time. Poor Pinlock fit is the only downside at this point. I’m amazed that someone has not yet come up with a Pinlock-type knock-off lens as well.

Thanks for this review. I just purchased a RF-1400 and really wanted their photochromic shield but the $200 price tag keeps me from getting it. I saw this on Amazon and have been contemplating trying it out. I think I will give it a try since it's less than half the cost of the shoei.

@NickH94 I didn’t seem dark enough for me, just got it today, and the sun was still irritating me more that $7 sun glasses I previously wore. It’s all personal preferences but I saw the $200 was significantly darker which is what I’m looking for. Just saving up for it now lol.

@@smellierwizard2646 I agree. I got an actual shoei transition one and it was darker and better overall. For the price this one isn't bad though.

What is the visor made of? Will it offer the same level of protection as one made my Shoei in the event of a stone impact or, worse still, a crash?
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat 11 ай бұрын
This visor appears to be made of the same identical plastic as the Shoei visor that came with the helmet. The thickness of the visor is also compatible. So it is reasonable to assume that its performance should be similar. That said, I have no idea if it will offer the *same* protection against a stone impact or a crash as I have seen no comparison failure tests side by side. AAMOF I have never seen any failure tests against a flying rock or crash, of the standard Shoei visor either so who knows what the baseline is. Suffice it to say I have no concerns in this regard. Meanwhile the photochromatic properties are an advantage, especially at this price point.

Are you still happy with this shield? Good as the Shoei? How is the pin lock and rain?
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat 11 ай бұрын
Yes I am still happy with the shield and it still works to darken in the sunshine. The only issue is that it doesn’t go as clear as it did when it was new, so in the house there is still a slight tint. That does not pose any problem in the dark though. The Shoei photochromic shield also did that but it took longer for that to happen. I have not installed a Pinlock lens on this shield since it requires adjusting the notches in the lens a bit to enable a proper fit. Since I live in Houston, the need for that is not great and I got through last winter without the need for the Pinlock.

The stock pinlock will not fit without doing modification to it?
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat Жыл бұрын
That is correct. The main flaw with this knock-off photochromic shield is that the distance between the Pinlock pins on the visor is a little short, which means that one would have to deepen the notches in the Pinlock lens to make it fit. Of course, that means that the lens will then only work with this visor and no other OEM visor. I have not done this (yet).

@@GrumpyGoat, it seems inconceivable to me that anyone would go to the trouble to make what you describe as a really good shield (for a much better price), and not accurately measure the pins. I would probably buy one if not for that.
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat Жыл бұрын
@@jvabsher I agree with you thinking it is inconceivable, but I suspect that the fact of the matter is that the technology to cause the shield to change (spray-on (?) coating) appears to be simple enough for some garage manufacturer to make it, where said manufacturer is not able (or doesn't care enough" to get the curved distance to the pins correct. In other words, Shoei must have been making money hand over fist with their "dimensionally accurate but prohibitively expensive" US$200+ photochronic shields. So far, I have been using the Puentymys shield without Pinlock insert without issue through the Houston "winter". I find that before my visor fogs up my glasses fog up and that is not relieved by a Pinlock lens. On the other hand, the Puentymys shield is still working as intended and I still have saved over $120 by buying it. Will I ditch it in favour of a Shoei Transitions shield if they drop the price (or if Puentemys raises theirs)? Probably.
