Monika and I headed off on the Triumph Bonneville to one of the classiest towns in Tenerife, and the original tourist destination in the Canary Islands; Puerto de la Cruz. The north of Tenerife
With it’s pretty architecture, cobbled streets, coffee shops, shops, restaurants and bustling vibe, it’s got a fantastic atmosphere and is very different to the touristy south of the island.
Motorcycle parking is very easy and free everywhere, so you can ride into the heart of the city and you’ll find a motorbike parking bay. If you’re travelling by car, you will almost certainly need to use one of the car parks (very centrally located).
The north of Tenerife is much more lush and there is a strong digital nomad community in towns such as Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Not only is this a good winter sun destination, but it’s also I very good city break destination and would work for a three/four day trip from mainland Europe.
If you travel to Tenerife, I really recommend exploring Puerto de la Cruz. Most people tend to stay in the warmer south- places such as Costa Adeje, but this is a really nice place to spend a day or two.
Out of all of the more popular Canary Islands such as Gran Canaria, Fuerta Ventura, La Palma and Lanzarote, the town of Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife was the first tourist destination.

The Datsun 120y or sunny as it was known was 1200cc 70hp not far off the bonny figures😂. They had square speedo and rev counters. If journos test cars now that dont have 180hp and a turbo they are slow. Those 70s cars still cruised the motorways at 70 and were leaps and bounds ahead of marinas/1100s ans allegros. Love it when u feature these classics, its an extra bit of spice. A bit hurtful when you say can anyone remember them😂😂😂😂yes i can and lots before them😂😂😂. I have had surgery recently and am laid up. I have watched and rewatched your vlog ( my fave on u tube) , its like a drug, i need my next fix. My favourite -- the isle of wight. Monica is doing an incredible production job but i think followers wan5 to see more of her and a little of motorcycle clothing on her and her thoughts on pillionage. Will add more value. You certainly are living the life.

Hi both, thanks for the tenerife tour, i have never been. Will change that in future i hope. Its very interesting and beautiful. Savvy Uk car buyers flocked to Datsun models for reliability and they were no more rotten than the fords/ vauxhalls/ renaults and citroens of their day. Thing is they did something about it. The chassis were copies of uk cars leaf springs and all but their engines as in Japanese motorcycles were so smooth and reliable and gearboxes like mk 2 fords, like butter. As a mature person i had several nissans and for the first time in my life as a poorer youth, i dint have to spend time and money on repairs. I also have had german british and japanese motorcycles. The japanese reliability wise do not have a competitor.

Hello again Freddie and Monica. Woooow 😂😂😂 what memories you have made me relive seeing that Datsun 120Y. My father had one exactly the same color, but it was not a sw type. It had 4 doors and a short boot. Incredible 😮😮😮, the license plate of the car according to the application that I have installed on my mobile is from January 1, 1979 (it is 42 years and 10 months). I'm sorry to tell you that car has been restored. I remember that my father's car had sheet metal problems and I don't think it has held up so well these 42 and a half years, without going through a workshop. I am very happy that you continue to enjoy my island so much. 👏🏼👏🏼👌👌👌 I hope that you will soon also visit one of the towns considered "most beautiful in Spain" - Garachico. With its great volcanic history. The people that rose from the ashes, like the Phoenix. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🔟 I hope at some point I can see you on one of your visits and meet you in person and greet you. By the way, in Puerto de La Cruz, there is one of the two Anglican churches that are in Tenerife. The other is in Santa Cruz. Both very pretty.

I remember them from when I was a kid. There were loads of them here in Norway. All but a very, very few are long gone now. Chiefly due to rust, as you pointed out. In fact, pretty much all Japanese cars from the 70s, and also the 80s, were extremely prone to rust. Years ago, I had a 80s Subaru 1800GL estate. And while the engine and drive train was buildt like a tank, the caross wasn't. Thin panels everywhere. It was also sound deadened with some sort of spray foam material that just sucked up moisture... No wonder it rusted up...

Our family car was a yellow Datsun 120Y Coupe circa 1977 'S' reg - the only reason we got rid of it a few years later is because the bodywork virtually disintegrated. I remember going with my dad to collect it from the showroom. Copes I think it was in Bearwood near Brum. It had tinted windows which, in those days, was like wow!

I remember these. Bought an almost new White Datsun Cherry Estate to learn on in 1976. All Datsuns of that period like all cars in the U.K. suffered from rusting. Changed it when I passed that year for a White Mk. 1 Atlas White Golf 3 door LS 1588 c.c.. The fastest Golf prior to theGTI’s introduction. Chocolate velour interior instead of the other car’s black plastic. Sold the Datsun for the same price as purchased.

Ha Ha Freddie, I used to have a Datsun 120y in exactly that colour, i think it was called Canary Yellow, But mine was the saloon with 4 doors, eventually drove it to the scrapyard the engine running like a sewing machine but the English weather rotted all the bottoms of the doors and sills. Loved that car. Also The Monestary in Puerto is a fantastic Restaurant complex now with wild birds roaming around the whole place while you eat, Chickens, Cockerals, Pheasants all stand next to you while you eat, Starve yourself before you go the food is fantastic, especially for meat lovers. then walk around the gardens. Go there you'll love it. It's also a popular wedding venue. Look forward to your visit there.

Superb video as always Freddie, keep it up! On the number plate subject, if you see TF first it was registered in Tenerife side on the archipelago , and GC in the Gran Canaria side. Also the numbers and letters go on order indicating how old a car is, starting by 00001 then up to 99999 and then 0001 A to 9999 A and so on. Then the newers ones are already going up on three letters like for example CRF and then it would go CRG, this way you can tell how old a car is by its number plate.

That’s so interesting- I wondered why it’s just “TF” and “GC” plates that I see. I’ll save this- thank you Adrian🙂

My friends dad bought a brand new Datsun 120Y, guessing it was around 1974 ish, in dark green, I was 11, and it was the first brand new car that I had ever been in, we went to Eastbourne to the beach for the day, seemed like a reallly big car at the time!

@@FreddieDobbs Ya'll have this gig down pat. The leper colony terrain reminded of Libya edifices /sand back in the 60s. I enjoy the style , bikes, music and the 2 of yours's characters ( my grammar sucks...sorry) . the time you take to respond to all who comment is good karma.

My brother had two. The SSS or Sriple S versions. The first was a boxy thing. And it was bloody amazing. The second was this version but a coupe (kind of!) and BRIGHT green. They both went like stink. Which in kiwi lingo means...pretty bloody quick!!

We had the 140y sedan version in bottle Green. Was a 1976 model and my dad traded it in for a 1981 Datsun Skyline. This was in South Africa. The 120y and 140y sedan and estate was common in SA and Australia

You're right - there are not many at all left in Europe and, reliability and simplicity is the reason. My first car was a 120y. two tone looking with bronze lower and a deep cream vinyl roof with a manual hinged sunshine pop up roof. Dad had a small collection of them at one point as they were ideal driving school cars and easy to self service and, more importantly, change the clutch and put in and take out a neat set of duel controls. Thing was though that they were so universally recognised as being reliable and serviceable that Mum and Dad would literally be asked at least once a month to consider offers of cash from people of ethnic backgrounds who wished to ship them over to India and Pakistan. Think how universally easy and understood an Enfield Classic is - well - the same goes for those little 120y's.... I have never though, seen an estate version so that was definitely new to me.... They were though, truly notorious for causing back ache with no lumber support what so ever.......

Hi The Datsun y series were very popular, you had the 120y, 140y, 160y and then you got the 140z and the 160z that were the sporty versions, great cars bullet proof engines quiet quick in the day going back to the late 70's early 80's
