In this episode we're going to get the outhouse built, pull a stump, and live it up amongst the hoards of mosquitoes and deer flies! Great times at the wall tent camp! I also talk about off-grid portable power, and pick some spruce tips for a perfume I want to make. So come along with us, sit around the fire, and enjoy watching someone else work! Haha

Years ago I made a shower out of an old hul-a-hoop. I hung a shower curtain on it and suspended it from a tree limb. I used an inner tube for a water container. It warmed up fast in the sun. The biggest problem I had was it getting to hot. I would just fill it partially and then add cold water after it heated until I got the temperature right. Love your videos. Makes me wish I was 50 years younger. I always dreamed of building a log cabin. The closest I ever got was a 8x8 chicken house made from landscape timbers. By-pass surgery and 2 strokes have made me an armchair participant.

Camped on Lake George in NY for about 1971 thru 1998. Never in that time would we put soap in the lake. Totally against the regulations. We bought sun showers at A sports store. We could 2 of us take a hot shower and rinse with a5 gal shower. I have Two of them in my emergency kit for use in hurricanes. While we were camping on LG. A local town shut down their water treatment plant for modifications. They tested the Lake water for bacteria and purity and fed the Bolton Landing NY town needs without treatment. The Lake water was purer than the water from the water treatment plant. Everyone obeyed the “nothing disposed into the Lake”. Regulations. Still clean today. JoeB

@SWAMPHUNTER644 4 жыл бұрын
@@josephburkhalter5105 I agree if it was a water supply lake or a campground. That little bit of soap would have about zero effect on water quality in most lakes. Certainly not much more harm than washing up without soap or swimming and much less than the effect of wildlife. Water quality was my profession for many years. I don't advocate ignoring posted regulations.

Yes, my Forestry friends here in the UP suggest painting the pipe above the roof (approx. 4 ft) black. This heats up from the sun and acts as a heat pump, the air rises and vents the vault.

Lived in the UP 1975-1979 at KISawyer AFB. The UP is my favorite place! It’s my happy place. I have video on my phone of the waves coming in. Avon skin so soft is what we used for mosquitoes. They weren’t that bad though back then. It also rarely got above 80F in the summer. Maybe because we were so close to Lake Superior. We lived on fish. Trout and salmon. Thanks for bringing me back up there with you. I live in Texas right now so I need the break!

My family used to buy the pix coils when we went to the drive in movies when I was a kid. They did not work that well and we still got a lot of insect bites. If you don't perspire heavily like I do then you can try Avon Skin So Soft. You can use it in diluted form on the dog too. Mix 50-50 with water. Another method is Walmart sells oil lanterns in the camping department and citronella oil in the garden department. It helps light up the outside areas and the citronella works against mosquitoes. As for Deer Fly they come in and attack in squadron strength. You could try a mist device to try and control them. If you can find citronella plants in your region you can container grow them. Up north they would die from the cold winters unless you have a greenhouse to keep them warm during winter. Stay healthy and stay safe and keep living your dreams.

Hi. Retired soil scientist in the Upper Peninsula. That "hardpan" layer is what is known as ortstein. It is the cemented suboil layer common in UP sandy soils known as spodosols. Very colorful layers due to the leaching of iron, aluminum, manganese and organic matter that accumulates in this layer. Dug thousands of pits in it over my career and never got tired of the cool colors.

The required court layout for a game is two stakes fastened securely in the ground 40 feet apart. The stakes should be of iron or soft steel one inch in diameter protruding 15 inches from the ground, each leaning approximately 3 inches ( 12-deg. from vertical) toward the opposite stake. Enjoyed watching! Love the rocking chairs!

We finally found our piece of property too. Just spent the weekend out there, our first camp overnight, with the bugs, the rain and the dirt. It was heaven. You are so right about an outhouse being a unique building. We’ve never built one so I stopped last week at a builder Amish mans place of business and ordered one, on skids so we can move it as needed. We had to buy metal fire rings because our property has not one rock on it. Lol. Can’t find one anywhere. I’m not big on bug spray or chemicals so I’ve learned over the years that mosquitoes hate flying over ground that you sprinkle granulated garlic on. I buy it in a big pound container at the restaurant food store. Coming home today was bittersweet but that hot shower was the best thing in life! Enjoy.

Girl in the Woods I just watched Dave’s video. I’ve already bought the clear plastic roofing and it’s loaded on the trailer to go to the builder tomorrow. I bought a whole “case” of it for my rabbit hutch, the outhouse and a sheet or two in the chicken coop. I guess I need to go rock picking. 🤗

Dave’s outhouse build is very good. And consistent. I’ve seen him build a few and it’s the same every time. 😉

I absolutely love how *stoked* you get over the simple things in life! Yeah, you know, like an outhouse and the proper build & use thereof! I grew up with outhouses at summer camps *(one was a three holer) and what you said rang so true! My only additions would be: (1) build in two framed & multi-layered screened air flow spaces - one about a foot above the bottom of the door & one up near the top of the back wall and (2) keep a pail of ashes in there and add a scoop after each dump. Once we did that to ours, it was more comfortable for those longer visits in the heat of summer and the odor was reduced even more. Some of the units never had to be relocated because breakdown occurred better & quicker.

Another outhouse tip, make or buy one of the three wick candles that are typically in the small buckets and keep it lit in your outhouse, it will keep it warmer than you could imagine when it's cold and it helps with keeping the bugs away.

Love you kids! You need a digging bar, spud bar. Definitely get a propane fired bug fogger. They work! Those rotten stump chunks, let em dry a couple of days then through one on the campfire at dusk for a smudge fire. Keeps the skeeters at bay.

People also put a crescent moon on the door to vent gasses. So if you do light a match it does not blow up. So a crescent moon with a piece of screen is needed. I love the clear roof!
