What’s the movie Pulp Fiction about?
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction follows the mission of two hitmen, Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta), out to retrieve a suitcase stolen from their employer, mob boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). Wallace has also asked Vincent to take his wife Mia (Uma Thurman) out a few days later when Wallace himself will be out of town. Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) is an aging boxer who is paid by Wallace to lose his next fight. Honey Bunny and Pumpkin (Tim Roth) are a couple of young lovers and small-time thieves who decide they need a change of venue. The lives of these seemingly unrelated people are woven together in a wildly entertaining and exhilarating motion picture adventure that both thrills and amuses.

I think it just goes to show the line a character wouldn’t cross. Leaving Marsellus would basically doom him to either death or whatever tf was up with the gimp, and the only reason Marsellus even had a problem with Butch was because he backstabbed him. Butch didn’t have as long of a criminal history as the other characters, so I could see him feeling way more conflicted over this than somebody else

The big underlying theme of Pulp Fiction is that no matter how badass someone _thinks_ he is, there’s always another level of badass that that person never had any idea existed. In the pre-credit scene, Tim Roth asks, “No one ever robs restaurants-why not?” And, of course, by the end of the movie, he _knows_ why not-and why he’s not cut out to be a robber.

The chainsaw would've done the job but starting it would've alerted Zed and Maynard giving them plenty of time to counter attack. The samurai sword was the best option - it was long, silent, and could one shot kill someone. Not all original thought, but: This is the completion of Butch's arc. His father was a brave soldier who, captured and imprisoned, held out through some of the worst hell imaginable until he was finally overcome and passed away. His legacy is passed down (via Christopher Walken's character) through the gold watch. Butch, however, is a pale shadow of that legacy. He's a cheat boxer who takes dives for money- in a word: dishonorable. He's about to go down one last time (swallowing his pride, as Marsellus phrases it) when Vincent Vega mocks him in the bar scene, calling him a "palooka" - the phrase for a mediocre, cheating boxer. Butch's pride is wounded in this moment, and he decides not to take a dive, and instead beats his opponent in the ring so hard he kills him. But he's still not done. He's made a step toward honor, but there's still one final challenge. Fast forward to this moment: captured, Marsellus being violated in the other room, Butch once again has a chance to walk away and shirk his father's legacy. But he turns back. He searches for the proper weapon to take up the mantle passed onto him, and doesn't find the right fit. That is, until he spots the katana up on the ceiling (that shot is one of my favorite shots ever- him looking up bloodied, exhausted, and awestruck). The katana is a warrior's weapon. Butch honors his father by becoming a warrior and saving his worst enemy from hell.

That's something I like about Quentin Tarantino's style of directing. From a writing perspective, he tells horrible stories. Characters do things they shouldn't logically be able to, time jumps around a bit (like someone approaching from far away in the background, in the next shot they're suddenly there). But I love it. He tries to capture the "emotional essence" of the story, and bends the physical elements around that. So like, nobody cares about Marcellus Wallace untying himself. We don't care to see it, we don't care if he actually physically could, we want to see him (the person) to be able to get revenge.

I never noticed before how much the katana wavers in Butch's hands as he goes down the steps. Butch is terrified: he knows exactly what will happen to him if he gets captured again. It's also why he took his time assessing each weapon (you can see him pause with each one, working out how he could use it to take out the two men): he was going in outnumbered and literally outgunned, so he needed to make sure he went in smart. I'm sure Wallace would have preferred he'd hurried up, but then again he would have been, ahem, screwed as well if Butch had failed. The important thing is that Butch went back when he didn't have to, to save someone who probably wouldn't have done the same for him (Wallace probably would have gone to get his guys with the pliers and blowtorch).

I don't think Samurai were particularly honorable, (what honor is there in killing yourself, if defeated, it's kind of the equivelent of throwing the chessboard when you lose) but as somebody pointed out in another comment, of the weapons choices, the sword was the warriors weapon as opposed to the baseball bat, etc., so it was part of his story arch.

I saw this film opening weekend in October of 1994. I was 18 years old. I remember a great deal about that night. Where we saw it, the energy in the theatre during the opening credits. I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling of the first time I watched Butch scroll through his weapon options before finally laying his eyes on the mystery weapon. It was the kind of thrill I've only had a handful of times in a movie-going experience. This was the year that I fell hopelessly in love with film as a medium.
