When I got my puppy, he was 9wks old, slept all night without an accident and never whined throughout the night. He was crate trained overnight and since then, he's now 3mo old, still sleeps through the night and has barked maybe 7 times. He doesn't bark, whine and already knows 6 hand commands and I trained him in one week for potty training and hand commands. He's very intelligent. Good boi!! 🎉

My boxer pup has been doing great brought him back Christmas Eve kept us awake the first night but I’m getting about 4-6 hours before he howls, although this morning we came down to stool in the crate which was my fault as I’ve had to start mixing him wet and dry as he’s a bit underweight and turning his nose up to dry food unless he’s starving, was like saag in the crate 😅

@SaraOndrako

That’s abnormal - puppies innately will go and move away from it if possible which is why during potty training, you only want a crate big enough for them to stand up, turnaround and lay down. Puppy Mill puppies and pet store puppies often learn to live in their own fences and urine because they have no other option so that’s a scenario that changes their natural inclination for keeping a cleanly space. If the dog is urinating and defecating in the crate, he/she needs to have more opportunity to go outside and get lots of reinforcement for doing so. Immediately get them out of the crate and clean with an enzymatic cleaner if the go in the crate. Hope that helps!

Respectfully, this could use some clarification… the amount of time they could physically ‘hold it’ is not the same as the amount of time it will take to have an accident. Untrained puppies have no reason to hold it as long as they can. With no desired substrate preference yet instilled, why would you wait if you could relieve yourself now? These rules are for overnight in crates where they will try their best not to soil their den. During the day the philosophy should be closer to, take them out often enough they won’t have anything in there to even give them the urge to make a mess. Consistency and repetition with that builds the habit of eliminating on the desired surface and then creates aversion to inappropriate surfaces.

My dog was never allowed in the house (He might have been allowed in the unfinished basement when the winter was so bad that we spent the night near my mother's job, but I didn't think so. My mother believes that animals belong outside and are naturally OK out there. Don't tell at me, I figured out how wrong she is early in my teens (although she still threatens to throw HER cat outside (she lives on a highway) when she wants to upset ME). I just want an idea of IF I want a puppy some day- Pretty sure I'd like to adopt a geriatric dog when I have a home though.

@SaraOndrako
@SaraOndrako 3 ай бұрын
Overnight is fine - during the day avoid lengthy periods of time. At night, especially with younger puppies, a crate keeps them safe if they happen to wake up in the middle of the night and get into anything. Most puppies will sleep through the night though after they can hold their bladder comfortably.

This goes for at night too. It depends on the age of your puppy - a young puppy still needs to relieve themselves in the middle of the night and it is necessary to get up with them and take them out at the first sign that they need to go to help with potty training. Most puppies that are potty trained will hold it through the night with no problem (about 8 hours) by 4 months but will still go about every 6-7 hours during the day.

Hi Miya - then your puppy is not crate/potty trained - he does not understand where to go and where not to yet. A 7 month old puppy is plenty old enough to hold it. There is a reason your puppy is not holding it in the crate and getting to the bottom of that reason will help you make the changes necessary to help potty and crate train your puppy.

what ive learned with my puppy (dachshund, so very stubborn) is the moment they start playing when it should be potty time, i take her inside. then we start to immediately play for a few mins and that sometimes helps puppies need to go. so the moment she stops playing and/or sniffs around the floor, we go immediately back outside. often times, puppies will need to pee a couple times to get it all out and same with poop. mine will poop in 2-3 different spots and pee maybe twice. hope this helps

It sounds like his body may be conditioned to only holding it for short periods. Try slowly adding time in between and ensure he's supervised 24/7 when not created so that you can look for signs of him having to go out. Gradually increase the increments of time between potty breaks from an hour to an hour and ten minutes a couple of times, then an hour and thirty minutes the next couple of times, and so on. I would increase water in the morning when you can monitor potty breaks so that he is well hydrated, which can give you the opportunity to lessen water intake at night, making it easier to hold and train the bladder for longer periods. If he already holds it all the way through the night, then he has the capability and may just need conditioning during the day to better understand that potty happens outdoors, not indoors. Hope that helps!

What about using the pad what is the ideal age
@SaraOndrako
@SaraOndrako 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Danny! I don't recommend using puppy pads, only because it creates an additional step that can often confuse puppies on where the appropriate potty area is and where it is not. The first reason being that having them urinate and defecate in the home (on the pad) can sometimes lead them to believe that urinating and defecating in the home (on or off of the pad) is okay. Outdoor versus indoor creates another layer of separation for clear understanding. Additionally, once you've trained them on a pee pad, when you want to train them to go outside, now you need to incorporate the indoor pee pad outdoors to help bridge that connection. You certainly can try this method and some people have success with it, however, I find crate training and only allowing potty outside to be the easiest and most efficient way in my experience. Hope that helps!

Ha! It feels like that sometimes when you have a new puppy, for sure. You do have to wake up in the middle of the night at first for young puppies because they can't hold their urine all through the night just yet. Luckily, that phase closes out fairly quickly, and you can move into letting them out late in the evening before bed, then early in the morning, and then eventually, as their body develops and they are able to hold it longer, you can go back to getting a full night's rest!

huskies are notoriously hard to train. people compare their character to cats when it comes to training. you just need to be patient a lot and consistency is the key. puppies dont have long attention span. so you wont be able to train your puppy for long, because something will take away their attention from you. try to find good dog school in your area. dog trainers can teach you lots methods and can personalize them for your dog

This is okay but so limited! Make sure you watch longer versions if you are actually training a new puppy. Exceptions to this rule are: 1. The puppy will need to go out after being fed. Remember if you are training, to keep those treats small and calculate them into his daily food ration. 2. Take the puppy out after it drinks. Even if it has been out recently. 3. After playing. 4. After training 5. After meeting a new person or any stressful event. It’s an instinct for puppies to empty their bladder and or bowels during stress! It makes them lighter for fleeing. So if you’ve accidentally scared or stressed your puppy, take him out. And never punish accidents because you will strengthen that instinct and make your potty training much more difficult! 6. After sleeping including naps. If the puppy wakes up, take them out! The more often they pee outside, the more that becomes habitual so every outing is working for you. I know the first few weeks are tough but preventing accidents is the best way to get it over with quickly.

@@anne330 hi Anne, the pup is 6/7 months old now, still goes in her crate but doesn't go on the floor. However I've made a section in the garden where I can leave the pup contained and safe so straight after food or after coming out of the crate the pup will go straight to that designated section I've made. It's also tall enough where she can't jump out of it . The pup does occasionally do a poop or a pee but have to keep an eye on the pup from a distance as if I'm close by the pup won't go. So if I'm out the picture looking from the window, pup has no distractions and eventually goes for a pee or poop. Moment I see it I rush out and greet and praise. I just feel that the distance I am the cue for praise may not connect well for command in the future. Time will tell. I must say though if I miss it and the pup is left unattended it sometimes eats a little poop.

My 10 wk old pomsky cries in the crate since the first day we got her at 8 1/2 wks. She has many accidents and I don’t know what to do. I started giving her treats in the crate to get her comfortable but she would only go in there to pee after that. She has also pees on her bed. I am a first time dog owner and I’m beaten by her. 😅
