Knowledge is everything when it comes to dogs, the bloodlines are worth far more than the appearance of the dog.

Yer u start there,, but as a breeder there's NO guarantee.. if it was we would all have the same standard of shepherds.. i have raised litter mates an get similar but a lot different outcomes at 1yr to 18mths...

Would be fun to see Haz do this again in a month with these same pups. He did a video awhile back with a friendly competitor Mike (another high level working dog trainer), on puppy testing, that was very interesting. They talked about how sometimes puppies can "flip" a little in terms of obvious confidence in testing, how a less secure very young pup can look much stronger after a few weeks, and how genetics play into it. As a puppy, my personal GSD was extremely confident, even around older reactive dogs on leash. I first met my dog when the breeder was outside walking the pups at 14 weeks. He just sat curiously watching other dogs from between his breeder's feet, his tail was neutral, he didn't back up or cower. It happened to be on Halloween night, in a neighborhood with tons of kids, decorations, dry ice & smoke effects. He was relaxed, neutral friendly to kids that wanted to pet him, but most of the kids were more focused on darting from door to door for their sugar high. With all the strange sights & sounds (and smells), he never once looked frightened or insecure. I went back a few days later and met all five remaining pups. The breeder intentionally did not want to sell them off until 14-16 weeks because he believes that's the best time for social learning from parent dogs & siblings, while still retaining high bonding ability with new owner. I walked the remaining pups on loose leash. Breeder had already started obedience training & socialization, introducing them to various surfaces & stimuli, etc. I already "knew" I wanted this boy, but gave each of the pups a good look over. There was one female that I really liked also. When I went back and examined all pups, I was still very impressed with my boy's confidence, but he also was just more social and wanted to play with me more. When I sat down, he kept jumping up on me, jumped on my back, seemed extremely enthused to interact with me, more so than the other pups (the one female was very close, perhaps equal, I was probably already biased toward him😂). Never looked back. Got my perfect heart dog Working Line GSD. These videos are helpful for next time though, for sure!!!❤❤❤

For my last two dogs, I asked the breeders to send me what I was looking for. This video shows why. They were both the most enjoyable dogs to both live with and compete with. Yes as puppies there were moments of uh oh - I paid extra for exactly this and we had the greatest time. Anja is 9 now and I'm beginning to forget how much work goes in to starting a puppy. Thanks so much for sharing the breeder end of dogs.

My fiancé bought me a normal pet line GSD puppy. He knew I wanted a German Shepherd to train and work with. I started off with a GSD with zero drive. No drive for toys, treats, or food. So I started by building food & treat drive and then went on to build toy drive. I now have a 13 week old puppy that knows multiple German commands and is learning bite work. She’s excelling at everything I teach her. So you are correct if a puppy is in the right hands they can do the job.

Haz is an amazing breeder. I wonder if he ever has pups that exhibit superior social bonding with handlers but don't seem like they're cut out for protection, that he'd consider for training as Service Dogs? My working line GSD honestly has great straight from Germany pedigree (mother West German, father East German, lots of titles in their lines). My dog's mother is a fully trained Service Dog. My dog is extremely confident & secure, has no separation anxiety, but is also extremely bonded & affectionate with me. He's more affectionate with me than his father is with his breeder, but neutral with strangers. ZERO bite, though (part my fault, but even if I'd worked at it early on, doubt he'd ever have developed more than passable sports protection bite). He does have a littermate that its a successful Police K9, so there are proper genes in there. My GSD has HIGH LEVEL obedience, though. Still able to learn new things without much difficulty at 3 yrs old. ZERO fear of escalators, elevators, slick surfaces, rough terrain, etc. Very gentle with children & elderly frail people, but remains neutral with strange adult humans. Walks confidently in crowded stores next to shopping carts, will walk without hesitation next to a wheelchair, recently walked with me for a week on crutches after I sprained my knee doing agility work with him!🤣 Doesn't sniff eye level food at grocery stores; if he starts to, stops immediately when I bring back to heel. (and BUSTED: I'd never sneak him onto a plane as a "Service Dog" for moral/ ethical reasons, but yeah, he goes to the supermarket and on "in&out" store trips on a semi-regular basis for training purposes in his harness. Of course, he ALWAYS comes on Pet Store & Home Depot visits where I don't "pretend" he's a service animal, he just behaves like one. And he came along to Urgent Care when I busted my knee, quietly sat "on place" on a towel during my X-rays in the room until released. The doctors and nurses admired my "Service Dog's Perfect, Calm Behavior". Since he wasn't getting walked that day with my injured knee, I felt it was an "enrichment" experience. Point being: I think he WOULD have been a top level Service Dog or Independence Dog. He has it from his mother's side, I think. Breeder agrees. Anyway: I bet some Haz' dogs could make EXCELLENT Service Dogs if they don't have the full bite and required drives for protection. I wonder if he's never tried. Especially since he spends so much effort with early socialization & confidence building, in an already genetically superior dog.

Puppies are always a gamble. It's like picking a stock to invest in - you can do all the research and get all the data, but in the end the outcome is never absolute or 100% predictable. You'll never know what the dog is truly capable of until they're an adult, and puppies can change for the better or worse on the way to maturity.

I tell people, there's a clear difference with 'rough play', & being a 'bash artist'. People are generally 'well meaning' but overly sensitive to put it PC, maybe if they were observational & had situational awareness, they'd understand your ethical methods... It's crueler to setting up animal to fail, if it's not suited for the task that you're testing for. It'll end up being potentially unstable, & ultimately maybe destroyed. *I wish there was a textbook to satisfy the way some people learn... for me your results speak for itself, 'proof is in the pudding', your dogs you train seem to enjoy it. I think part of dog training is training handler/owner's mindset too.

Thanks for the clarification … I agree one may only know a potential of a specific puppy, combined with a gut feeling … especially if you handle puppies on a regular basis. Whether one’s looking at the physique or psyche … however, like you said genetics is also a big component of a decision as well. But I would guess most people don’t have the advantage that you have Haz … and usually make a split decision within moments after meeting a litter, unles the breeder’s making a decision for the prospective client … which I assume in your case is more than likely the way it’s done. But then you’re not exactly a typical breeder either.

these puppy tests are very interesting. I grew up with German Shepherds, one was a Schutzhund with all the papers, big too. the other one had no training at all but he was great with us kids, we were like 4-6 when we got him. anyway i have a soft spot for smart dogs. i would have picked the black collar puppy as well. but i also like the big boy. I wish more people put more thought into deciding which bread is right for them, as well as which puppy is right for them. As i get older i find that i like other peoples dogs a lot. i am just too lazy now for my own dog. Cats it is. Sometimes a cat is the dog you need. 20-year-old me would definitely have a GSD. definitely not a Malinois, too intense. i want a dog that i tell platz next to the sofa and he should be asleep in a second with one ear at the ready. I just want the lights on when i talk to him.

Hello!! I am just now seeing this video after your other. I liked the female that had drive but she thought a little bit first. Where are you located? I’m looking for a dog for both protection work and a family dog. Willing to work and heard sheep and watch out for chickens geese and donkeys. I really like what you are saying and agree with you. I’ve heard that males are better for the work I’ve mentioned. Is that true? I liked also the one of the males you showed. It’s months later now how is it going with these dogs?
