One of the better videos on lights for planted tanks. Concise and easily understood. Also you are one of the better youtubers for planted tank information.

Great information, I've never researched it beyond lumens (common sense told me that watts were not that useful from the plants' point of view). I'm surprised to hear that color temperature doesn't affect plant growth. Intuitively I would have thought that plants adapted to use the colors of light they are likely to receive in their natural environment. Thoughts?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 3 жыл бұрын
Color Temp (Kelvin) of a light is based and measure on what we see. The spectrum of the light is in itself a measurement in what the plant actually uses. You can have a warm light making your tank look red but if it's not pushing the actual spectrum of red (or blur or green) that the plants can use, it's not all that useful.

Nice video. I got a light with 4000k on it, Now i don't know this is silly or not but will adding 2 such lights makes the setup 8000k or is that still 4000k ?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 3 жыл бұрын
Kevin' ratings don't "add up". It'll mix. For example, you take a 4000k (a warmer light) and put in a 8000k (a cooler light) it'll probably put it around 5000k maybe... can't tell without a meter but it will make the warmer 4000k light more cooler. (more white)

I got a question about my 10 gallon tank. So I'm trying to carpet the whole substrate floor with dwarf hairgrass, and I was met with yellow water as expected. I was reading a few other vlogs that yellow water is considered to be okay for my fishes, but it's bugging the hell out of me. If water changes should be frequent, how frequent should I do this for? And I'm using a CO2 booster, are the effects of CO2 from a CO2 tank different from using an API CO2 Booster?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 6 жыл бұрын
First off, do you know what's causing the tannins? (browning in the water) for co2 booster it's a different thing than actually injection into your tank. It's just providing your plants with a different kind of carbon. It works but it tend to melt some plants and if not careful can kill you live stock (easier to overdose on liquid carbon.)

I did find that my tank had nitrates but with the fishes I have in there (3 Zebra Danios and 2 Glofish Danios, obviously good for handling those types of situations), I really don't know what's causing the tannins. I got artificial driftwood (will be taking that out soon for real driftwood), and I recently just did a water 50% water change but did not vacuum the gravel as it was recently planted...and even then that was useless as I still have tannins. Can tannins be caused by exposure of soil to the water?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 6 жыл бұрын
If it's a soiled tank then for sure that's where it's coming from. Again, it won't harm fish (they actually like it) but it's annoying to look at. The only way is to just keep doing water changes and it'll go away. Did you just set up the tank or something?
@jaydemarco4987
@jaydemarco4987 6 жыл бұрын
Yes sir! It's been 3 days since I set up everything
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 6 жыл бұрын
Errr... and you already have fish in it? First off, the fish might not do good. Soil creates huge ammonia spikes. Just do water changes. You can do maybe 50% each week. But I'd just testing the water EVERY DAY and if ammonia is too high, do a water changes to keep your fish alive. Sooner or later the tannins will go away. Even if the fish you got "are good for handling those situations" you still have 3 danios and 2 glofishes... To do what? Cycle your tank? Why so many in a 10 gallon tank to "cycle the tank"? Either way. Just do water changes and the tannin's go away. You can use something like purigen or something to filter the water but that might not help too much. Good luck.

So if i understand it correctly, i have a light i can set anywhere from 3000 kelvin to 6500 kelvin. Are you saying that it doesnt matter what kelvin i set it on, because that kelvin is only visible to us humans and the plant growth will be the same regardless of what kelvin mode i set my light to? It's about the other factors such as intensity?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 2 жыл бұрын
Kelvin rating has little to do with what spectrum the plants need but that depends on the lights you get. Some can allow you to adjust the kevin with little change to the spectrum going out from the light but that really depends on the make of the lighting kit. As for intensity, you really have to look more at, again, the kit and that main factor is the PAR and PUR ratings that lighting kit and produce.
@stigblue
@stigblue 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheWaterBox i have the onf flat nano pendant 90 cm. The light has the really good full spectrum LED so I suppose the Kelvin change will not affect plant growth but just the anesthetics of how my light and tank appears to me?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 2 жыл бұрын
@@stigblue In a nut shell, yes. Does that pendant actually allow you to change the kevin rating? Or just the "color" of what's coming out of the light? It's really hard to say not knowing how it's built.
@stigblue
@stigblue 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheWaterBox i do not know. Obviously there is a difference in the appearance of the light from warmer to white. But I suppose that is also what Kelvin should work? 😅
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 2 жыл бұрын
@@stigblue Maybe? I don't know what kind of lighting kit you're using that can change the "Kelvin" rating. What exactly are you doing on that pendant light that's changing the "color"?

Simple straightforward question as this information is too much and overwhelming..... I got 28W Sunsun’s ADE 900c LED 7500k light for my 3 feet planted aquarium which is 45 gallons. Is this light good enough to grow most of the plants including carpet plants ? The light looks bright as day light.
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you're trying to do and grow. Finnex Planted Plus CC or a Fluval Planted 3.0 usually works pretty well for most things.
