Hi there! This video was great however I have a question. What type of culture did Purple Hibiscus show to the audience (international one) about their culture and how did it encourage the reader to see the world in a different way?

​@@zahramammadzada4059 Hi Zahra. Great question. If I understand it correctly, you are asking what an international audience learn about the culture in Nigeria. There is the Igbo culture, represented by Papa Nnukwu in the novel. They have their own language and beliefs. Historically, when Nigeria was under British rule, the Christian missionaries tried to convert people to Christianity (this is seen in the novel through Papa's strict beliefs and preference for his father, Papa Nnukwu, to have a Christian funeral. This angers Aunt Ifeoma as she knows Papa Nnukwu had Igbo religious beliefs. Other aspects of Nigerian culture that we see are the corruption from the very top of the government down through officials, the police etc. There is also a culture of violence in Nigeria: from the killing of Ade Coker to the beatings and abuse given out by Papa to his family. The novel is from the perspective of the 15 year old Kambili, a girl. What we see is a strongly patriarchal society. Perhaps this is what makes Aunty Ifeoma's confidence to speak out all the more remarkable. There are also aspects of the vibrancy of Nigerian culture with the references to music, food and clothing. I suppose that any of the main themes of the novel could be seen to show us different aspects of Nigerian culture.
