Hi sir thank you for the video, it was really helpful. I do have a question. To what extent does the symbolism of the purple hibiscus flower apply in the real world? Im struggling to find this information and i refrain from using AI. Please answer as soon as you can if u can help me as im doing a presentation tomorrow on the Purple hibiscus flowers.
@mrpollardenglishКүн бұрын
It is fairly unusual as a colour for hibiscus flowers in the real world. Maybe look again at the way the flower was created for Aunt Ifeoma by her botanist friend. Hibiscuses are usually different colours. But not purple. Not sure if that is info you already have... Anyways hope it helps. Good luck with the presentation.

Would you say in unseen poetry the analysis is the most important thing to get high marks? Or do we need to have a high variety of techniques?
@mrpollardenglishАй бұрын
Hi Rupert. Apologies for the slow reply. Hope this isn't too late for you. It's a great question. In poetry (and arguably drama & prose) the depth of analysis scores is very important. So for example, analysing how the poet LAYERS meaning in a poem: this might be how the simple, nursery-rhyme structure and rhyme scheme in this poem reinforce the diction of 'boy' to reinforce or amplify the theme of the wastefulness of war and the tragedy of the loss of very young lives in WWI. Use evaluative verbs to precisely explain the effects (e.g. reinforces, amplifies etc). Hope that kind of makes sense. Please ask if you would like further exaplanation. Here to help you #AceYourEnglish! 👊

My exam is tommorrow so thank you for this helpful content! I do think however that there's also an analysis that can be brought to individual characters, how the foil characters work etc. For example how contrast between father benedict and amadi or ifeoma and papa highlight the most important aspects of the book. Otherwise, really useful :)

Aaaaa me too 😭! Good luck !!
@mrpollardenglishАй бұрын
Totally agree! Sadly, ran out of time to do these for May 2024. You are spot on though. Looking how characters interact and how Adichie creates some characters as 'foils' to others is where the interesting analysis lies, rather than analysis of a particular character in isolation. Hope it went well though.

Thanks, but how long would this take in a typical exam?
@gloria-my7pq2 ай бұрын
Hi Mr.P 😀😀 your videos are so helpful!!!! If i choose an extract question and I want to analyse a sentence that’s pretty long (but has the keywords to zoom in), could i use ellipsis to not waste time? for example, “I lay in bed after Mama left and let my mind rake through the past, through the years when Jaja and Mama and I spoke more with our spirits than with our lips.” change to ➡️ “I lay in bed…mind rake through…spoke with our spirits than..lips”. & start my word-zooming-in analysis after? Or should i just write the whole sentence and just break it down by each part after e.g. The sentence “I lay in bed after Mama left and let my mind rake through the past, through the years when Jaja and Mama and I spoke more with our spirits than with our lips” emphasises the relief Kambili feels. This can be seen in the phrase “lay in bed”, an action kambili displays when she feels safe, contrasting to~~~. Also, it can be seen in the verb “rake”~~. I’m scared i’d lose marks if i use ellipsis but waste unnecessary time if i dont. I hope my question makes sense😅😅
@mrpollardenglish2 ай бұрын
Hi Gloria. Your question makes sense. Yes, ellipsis is fine. As a rule try to keep quotations as short as possible to support or illustrate the point you are making. Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have further questions or need more clarification on the quotations. Good luck!

Could you say that it is ironic as Amaka wishes to be like Kambili but Kambili also wishes to be like Amaka as she looks up to her or is that too far fetched?
@mrpollardenglish2 ай бұрын
That's a great question. Yes, the cousins are getting to know each other at this point in the novel. Both are somewhat jealous of what they perceive each other's life is like. So yes there is some irony in this.

Hi! What do you think about the theme of “control” in the novel?
@mrpollardenglish2 ай бұрын
Hi Akuji. Firstly, really sorry for the slow reply to what is a great question. Control is massively important in the novel and I think is linked to the themes of power and oppression which run throughout Nigerian society (at the time the novel is set) from the Head of State downwards. Some important quotes and explanations.... "It was different in Nsukka. We did not schedule our lives around Papa." This quotation contrasts life under Eugene’s control with the more relaxed atmosphere at their aunt's house in Nsukka, highlighting the abnormality of Eugene's strictness and the possibility of a life less controlled. “Silence hung over us as Papa prayed. Afterward, he muttered that the devil would not win. He would not win in his house.” Eugene’s invocation of religious warfare against perceived disobedience or sin within his household shows how he frames control as a spiritual struggle, reinforcing his dominance with religious fervour. “The figurines, which had grown dusty in their individual positions, were now fixed on their shelf. When the figurines were still, our home was still.” The figurines symbolize control and order in the family home, with their stillness reflecting the stifling control Eugene exerts over his family. "Everything I did at home was by a schedule... When Papa was not home, the schedule loosened its belt and we breathed more easily, but it still ruled." This highlights the oppressive atmosphere created by Eugene's rigid schedules, which dominate the lives of his children and wife. "He told us that the family needed penance to cleanse us of our sins because we had walked into sin, because we had slept in sin with my grandfather." This quote shows Eugene's strict control over the religious and moral standards of his family, emphasizing penance and sin as tools to maintain control. Hope this helps you. Thanks for the great question, because it really is an important aspect of the novel I'd not considered... Good luck the with exam prep.
