I actually think the Down The Rabbit Hole name is perfect for your stated goal of capturing the process of someone learning about an event or person. It’s not a documentary that tries to have direct connection to the subject, nor is it a news report about something currently unfolding. It’s someone sitting at their computer and going down the rabbit hole to find out as much as possible.

You say you don't like the title of your series, but I honestly feel like it evokes the general feel of the experience. You also said you want your videos to deliver a sense of experiencing the concept first hand, slowly developing a better understanding of what took place. "Down The Rabbit Hole" perfectly encapsulates that.

As someone who deeply cares about animals and volunteered at a cat shelter for five years, I don't think Diane really cared about the cats, or more specifically their wellbeing. I think she just thought a cat cafe would be a cute, profitable thing she could do, and never considered the true reality of it - for whatever reason. No one who truly cares about animals would ever put them in the kind of conditions that Diane did.

18:40 I have been to an owl cafe in Japan and can confirm that the concerns for the ethics of it are completely valid. It was a cafe in name only because it was just a room without any tables with owls in it and they gave us a drink (a bottle of coke). What it was really just paying to hang out with and hold an owl for like 30 minutes. The reason I say it's probably not very ethical was because they had the owls behind a glass shelf with perches in it. It was maybe 2X1 meters large and had 10 owls in there with another glass cage with a couple of large owls. I don't know if the owls go to another area for the night or get exercise but the cages they were in were pretty small for how many owls were in them.
@draconicfeline6177
@draconicfeline6177 Жыл бұрын
I think I went there, actually. I was very concerned for the owls, for sure. I did see one of the ladies there out and about with one of the owls, so she might have been able to fly them as in falconry... but I doubt they do that for the big owls or the tiny owls...
@lucyw4195

Yeah, I was really surprised at the low animal welfare standards in Tokyo compared to big Western cities. I visited two animal cafes in Japan -- a hedgehog cafe and a snake cafe -- and came away wishing I'd done more research into the ethics of these places. In retrospect, the hedgehog cafe was definitely unethical. When I initially booked the tickets, I didn't realize hedgehogs are nocturnal animals. The hedgehogs just wanted to sleep, and the cafe was basically keeping them awake all day by passing them between patrons. The cages also looked cramped, with a bunch of hedgehogs in each one (I think they're generally solitary animals, so this must have been stressful for them). I felt guilty about giving the cafe money, and wished I'd done more research. In contrast, the snake cafe seemed much more ethical. The snakes seemed healthy, curious and well socialized. The owner taught us how to properly hold the animals so as not to scare them, and explained that the snakes take breaks so they don't get overwhelmed by being handled by too many people. The cages still seemed a bit on the small side, but pet stores in the US keep snakes in similarly-sized cages, so maybe snakes don't need much space? And each snake got it's own cage, which seems good. While I'd like to do a bit more research, I'd probably visit again.

Jericho I don't necessarily think his habit of implementing odd features out of the blue is the thing people have been getting riled up about- hell, i think the game is actually kinda fun with all the random bits thrown in- that's just what he emphasizes as his main flaw. People actually rip on him because a) the programming itself that he does is incredibly inefficient and it really looks like this is the only programming experience he has (but don't quote me on that) and b) he really, REALLY can't handle criticism. He gets defensive incredibly quickly and has lashed out on a few different videos criticizing him in a way that's ridiculously unprofessional, and then he wonders why people harass him about his childish behavior. I think he has gotten somewhat better about it as time's gone on, but he's still touchy and comparing him now to how he used to be sets the bar pretty damn low. Don't get me wrong, I think he really is trying to perfect the game and has made a lot of progress both in his work and personally, but I still highly doubt he truly knows what he's doing and I can't really sympathize with him whenever he refuses the help he desperately needs. Reminds me a little bit of Diane, actually, just really watered down. As far as I know he hasn't doxxed anyone or caused any real damage, he's just a bit of a basket case when you look behind the calm-voiced-weeby-meme-man exterior.

My biggest question is: what the hell did Diane do for a living before this? The woman was clearly in her 40s at least and, as you pointed out, this business was probably funded by a sudden large inheritance she received. Her absolute inability to handle criticism of any kind points to her never working retail or the sort and she probably never worked a "low" position on any ladder (unless it was like secretary or something). Basically how is this woman middle-aged, seemingly single/independent, and yet has no concept that she could be in the wrong? The only explanation that I can think of is she married some rich person young and was a stay-at-home housewife up until they died and that large inheritance she got was from them. But that leaves the question where is *any* mention of them? I don't believe she would've never played the widow angle. That card would've absolutely been played at some point.
@pickles3128

This woman really had no redeeming qualities; she didn't even care about any of the cats. I got so mad about that poor lady whose cats died and she refused to pay for the vet bill before she could get back home. If this woman took care of my cats while I traveled to take care of a sick relative and she ended up neglecting them, saying, "You gave me sick cats! I'm not paying for them!"... She'd be found dead of drinking her boxed wine and rat poison. She was such a shit person she assumed the only reason someone would give her cats would be because they were aware of the illness yet too cheap to take them to the vet. I know she wasn't at fault, but it's the sentiment, and the obsessive urge to acquire cats then lock them away in a basement, would save future lives.

The family not knowing about their cat being sick until leaving said cat was left at the purr cat cafe reminds me of a thing I once read about cats hiding their injuries due of an instinct of not wanting to show weakness. It's a trait that some prey animals, like rabbits, have.
@DistractedGlobeGuy
@DistractedGlobeGuy Жыл бұрын
That's definitely the case for a lot of cats, especially those who are never made to become accustomed to close care and attention. That's why it's so important to take them in for regular checks even if they seem fine-so they understand that the vet's office isn't a dangerous place to be afraid of and that they don't have to hide their problems from you.
@ComradeCage
@ComradeCage 4 жыл бұрын
I understand where Elvis Delaney is coming from, but there's a line drawn for me between pity for mental health cases and the risk of damage emotionally and beyond against people who are affected by said cases. What Diane did to Kat, as well as what she may be doing to those poor cats she owns far outweighs the care I have for her own problems like alcoholism. You don't let a mental case keep their children because of the potential danger it poses to the child. This should be no different. She is a danger in my opinion. To suggest otherwise would be to imply those cats aren't worth protecting, at least as I see it.

I come from a family comprised almost exclusively of alcoholics. Only a couple of them are abusive assholes, and, surprise surprise, they're the ones who have never given a shit about their drinking habits and don't see anything wrong with their behaviour. This attitude that Americans have that addicts should be endlessly tolerated and given free excuses to hurt others is one of the most toxic elements of the current PC paradigm. You don't get my sympathy just because you're a fucking wino-if anything, it just makes you that much more detestable and disgusting.

And *then* the suicide attempt! My opinion suddenly flipped, uh, 90 degrees, I guess, and ended up with the same feelings I had after the videos about Terry and Christine. Very unpleasant people that I would never want to meet, but could also *never* blindly hate nor be okay with them getting harrased. Related to that, I appreciate that you're monitoring the impact your videos might have on situations. I wish more youtubers would actually take responsibility for their work. Just because the temperature was comfortable (but cool) for a human doesn't mean it was for a cat. Cats get cold a lot easier than humans. That's why they always seem to be sitting on heating vents, curling up with each other or with humans, and basking in the sunshine. Cooler temperatures are pretty uncomfortable for them.

I think we had one here in Russia? Wasn't that good apparently, what with the owls being birds of prey, and the owner being more intrested in making those sweet rubles than in animals' wellbeing. I didn't follow it tho, so I don't know how it all ended.
@MrJaySoN777
@MrJaySoN777 4 жыл бұрын
As a followup to what I wrote: Yep, it's in Moscow, it's called Owldom. And they're still operating, apparently! It's both better and worse than Purr. Better financially, because they are actually operating and getting customers and positive reviews. Worse, because as far as I remember, Diane didn't get any of her cats killed. There is at least one confirmed case of an Owldom owl dying (his nickname was 'Aleksandr Makedonskiy' ('Alexander the Macedonian'), or 'Makie' for short). The guy had a fungus infection and several infarctions, the last of which did him in. Not long before that, the customers started pointing out that the owl looked, well, bad (had bald spots etc.) - which prompted the owners to finally send him to rehab clinic 'Lunnaya Polyana' ('Moonglade', and yes, it has owls named Illidan and Malfurion in its care). The owner of the cafe, one Mark Lobintsev, actually went and sued 'Moonglade'. First he claimed that Makie is actually alive and 'recovering', and 'Moonglade' is lying; then, when 'Moonglade' released the record of their initial conversation with Lobintsev about Makie's death, the man claimed that 'Moonglade' was responsible for 'not providing proper care', which killed his stressed out, fungus-infected owl. As of recently, 13th of February or smth, he lost the case in court, though 'Moonglade' didn't disclose the details yet due to their hands being full. This shit dragged on since late 2018 tho, I think.
@MrJaySoN777
@MrJaySoN777 4 жыл бұрын
People are talking stuff though. I didn't read much apart from Makie and Moonglade's case, but almost everyone says that he wasn't the only owl that died in Owldom's care (which isn't hard to believe). I also picked some stuff from VK (russian soc. network) and KZfaq comments under the videos that talk about Owldom. I have no verification for these, but still, here goes (translated from russian): 'They kept silent about the first bunch of birds boiling alive when a heating pipe burst. About none of the birds having any official documents, since all were bought from poachers - even a Red List Eurasian eagle-owl. About the owner evading taxes and the staff working for black salary. About another owl dying from the same fungus as Makie - a strix owl named Fyodor. And the disappearance of long-eared owl Forest.' - yt comms 'At the moment owls of different species, including natural enemies, are kept in a single space and occasionaly move around untied (birds are only locked in at night), which is unsafe not only for the owls themselves, but for people as well, since the larger specimen such as eurasian eagle-, snowy and ural owls are seriously dangerous for humans.' - vk 'Not all birds have special irremovable rings to prove their legal origin. Moreover, several species introduced in the cafe aren't bred in Russia at all. Therefore a question stands about the legality of keeping such animals in captivity, especially in a commercial venue' - vk 'Several customers noticed, and some people with knowledge of the inner workings of the cafe confirmed, that not only were the animals treated poorly, but some even died, only to be replaced with similar-looking specimen.' - yt comms

While, obviously, I can only speculate, having a close relative that is an alcoholic (mostly based off wine) with a very similar personality to Diane, I can hazard a few guesses. Alcohol might not cost that much, but even the cheapest alcohol does add up. That said, this relative of mine also has a serious habit of going mass internet shopping after getting drunk to the extent that even one of her credit card bills is more than double of what I make in a month. Now, of course, alcohol doesn't necessarily "cause" mass spending in and of itself, but that's why I believe that based on what you said, Diane probably has similar personality and management problems that this relative of mine has.

I think Down the Rabbit Hole is a great name. It conveys the idea that you're entering a strange new world. It also is very descriptive as the subjects you cover are deep and intricate puzzles often referred to as rabbit holes. It also has a fun connotation due to the Alice in Wonderland reference. I certainly can't think of a better one, I've always liked the name.

I know this isn't the place to suggest a DTRH video topic but I would love to see you tackle True Captalist Radio. Watching a man who did a pundit show on the markets and politics slowly get sidetracked into entertaining a bunch of trolls from /b/ /v/ /pol/. Its like a weird time capsule of the internet, watching memes surface on the show like how MLP got super popular and then died out, or how eventually the host started profiting off all the Trolls. How each Hiatus had more trolls leave and new ones join. How he got banned from Twitter and eventually peitered out.

I really get where you’re coming from, in the wild owls are very solitary creatures, but owls can be conditioned to be very social and affectionate. But they’re actually a lot like cats in the way that they seem standoffish or like they don’t like people because they’re quite intelligent, they don’t so easily fall into the “this human takes care of me therefore I NEED them” mindset like dogs do.

Thats not true at all. They are not like cats, and they cannot be 'socialized', they are very distressed when they are kept as pets. They do not form attachment bonds to their handlers that can recognized as affection, they are very intelligent in a way that is unlike other raptor so they are usually mishandled.

Fredrik listening to you talk about doing these videos and how they might affect the subjects, or your goals in doing them, what you think about and try to do when you create them - I know this will sound a bit odd, but I am just really, I'm not even sure how to put it, but you are so clearly a kind and compassionate person - it's just incredibly inspiring and really makes me feel this sense of hope for humanity especially creators of content on the internet. I apologize as I know this sounds like I'm one too many drinks into the evening, and for once that is not the case! :-) But I sense this genuine kindness and moral integrity that really is quite amazing. As some of my past comments describe I don't always necessarily like every video you do - but that's the point - I like WHY and HOW you do them anyway. You're an amazing individual my young friend, and I hope that the sincerity of my comments comes through despite my weak attempts at humor ;-) And of all the content that I consider helping to finance - yours is the most worthy. So now I'll see if I can get this Patreon thing to work for me ;-) Peace my young friend - and - 'Age quot agis' (Do what you do best)

5:23 1 word: ALCOHOL I agree with Fred that "she wasn't thinking," but it's because her brain was compromised 24/7 by alcohol - either being drunk, being black out & unconscious completely, or being hungover. I got more thinking done when I was using heroin & meth every day, than when I was drinking. Diane was not a functioning alcoholic. Her only hope would have been to rely on all the individuals who *weren't* intoxicated & in active addiction - as in, all the employees & volunteers who she chased off. If she had let them do their jobs & kept them on, then she probably could have gotten away with having others do all the work while she spent her time intoxicated. From the outside, she would have appeared to be a high functioning alcoholic. Unfortunately, she made the HUGE mistake of not letting other people do all the work (including running the business social media page). Honestly...if she didn't get so freaking angry when she was drunk (as she's definitely an angry energetic drunk, like me), then she probably would have been able to stop herself from chasing off everyone who tried to help her. That's just my 2 cents, though, as someone with...let's say _experience_ in this..."area of expertise" lol. ✌

@@bookle5829 Yes? I prioritized using heroin every day of course, because not using it caused really bad withdrawals for me (and it's what I'd say I was truly addicted to). But meth was fun and the meth helped me stay conscious, counteracting the heroin. The area I was living, at the time (Phoenix Arizona), was flooded with cheap meth, that my dealers & junkie friends also used and shared with me. So, I could afford to do both. There's even a name for mixing heroin & meth into the same needle & shooting it up at the same time. Heroin definitely #1 though. 😅 Once I was broke, I only bought heroin. (And once I moved back to Wisconsin where meth was shitty and expensive, at least at the time, I didn't bother. Basically none of my heroin junkie friends used meth, our heroin dealers didn't bother selling it or using it themselves either, so totally different situation compared to Phoenix.)

Idk if you're taking suggestions or if this has been suggested before but I'd love to see a video on the girl on Tumblr who pretended she was the real writer of the fanfic My Immortal (which is a rabbit hole all by itself tbh) a few years back, she gained tumblr clout by saying she was a Native American lesbian and claimed she wrote the fic as a way of finding her brother she lost in the foster system when they were kids, the only "proof"" she had was the login some dead fanfiction.net account from the 2000s which had a similar name to the original author's account. People believed her for a few months but then her brother went on Kiwifarms and said that he was safe and well, him and his sister were white, they were never in the foster system, she knew where he was and it was all a lie to sell her memoirs. There was way more drama surrounding from the start and I don't remember a lot of details now but that's the basic gist. Her tumblr name was rosechristo1, her blog is deleted now but there are still screenshots and info out there. I probably haven't described it well but as someone who saw it all go down firsthand and it was honestly ride from start to finish lol

Hi Fredrik - Again, another great video, and THANK YOU. If I may be so bold I would add to the question of "What was she thinking?", or rather add to the answer. I think she is very much like so many people who do NOT understand the internet nor social media, but worse than that they seem to have no real perception of what terrible people they are NOR how the internet allows all kinds of people to point that out to them when they start to act like the terrible people they are. What was she thinking? She was thinking that she could act terribly and that nobody could do anything about it - and then profit. That's just my take on it.

On that part where you talked about how your research often leads to self reflection, watching your videos had a similar effect on me, mainly your videos on people who had bitten off far more than they could chew, like Wings and Diane, and people that had lost all self awareness like Gene Ray and Terry Davis. Basically, for a long time I’ve been in sort of this fantasy world where I would constantly imagine animations and comics and stories and characters in my head, but the most that would ever come out of them were a few sketches or if I was particularly motivated a few pages of a chunk of the story, in an amateurish novel style. I was already starting to feel strange about this, how I had such grandiose ideas and yet created so little. Watching your videos wasn’t some dramatic moment of revelation and I don’t want to give that impression, but what they were was sort of that kick over the edge to realize I was heading down a possibly self destructive and delusional path, artistically at least. I’ve been drawing much more recently and have shelved my huge sweeping ideas for smaller simpler short story topics and I’ve generally been having a much better time and have been regaining confidence in my artistic potential. I don’t know if you’ll ever see this but I thought you might like to know your videos helped to have a positive impact on someone.

There was one where he straight up said he doesn't believe in love and everyone he loves will end up hating him. Even his name sounds weird. It makes me think he wants people to use him.
