Woohoo! We've moved up a number. Find out just what that means by watching.
I've started installing electronics--that's exciting. I've also invested in some non-airplane related electronics. That's also exciting.
In order to map out my wiring harness, I'm installing LRUs (Line Replaceable Units -- or components) into the aircraft starting with the pitch AP servo. In order to install the servo, I need to install the linkage. So here we are.
I apologize in advance for the silly conversation, but I liked it. So I left it in. If you didn't like it, much like critique of my shoddy craftsmanship: keep it to yourself. 😉
I had a lot of fun with this episode. I hope you have fun watching it.

------------
I'm Ryan, an aviation enthusiast who has decided to build his own aircraft and publish the entire process online for others to watch along. If you have ever want to build an airplane, this is a great glimpse at what it takes.
The airplane is a two-person experimental kit built aluminum plane capable of over 200 miles per hour, and a range of over 700 miles. The kit is manufactured by Van's Aircraft, one of the most prolific kit providers on the planet, now embroiled in a Chapter 11 reorganization process in order to prevent bankruptcy ;-). The airplane is aerobatic, functional, and fun. The build is challenging, time consuming, fun and rewarding.

Hey Ryan, fellow Van’s RV builders here (RV-14 - husband/wife team). We’re in the early stages of the Empennage Kit. So far, I’ve only documented our build through still photography. I’ve shot video on video cameras and Go Pros, but have never edited footage into an amateur production. I’ve never dedicated the time to tackle that particular learning curve - and it’s a steep one! Our son has a degree in Film Production, and through him I learned how much work, crew, and hundreds of hours that goes into the final presentation of even a :10-minute short film. I appreciate, and respect, the time you invest in sharing your project with us, the audience. I’ve followed many experimental/amateur-built aircraft builders over the last several years that share their projects via You Tube. I’ve always gotten something out of every video I’ve watched. Sometimes it’s something to build skill on. Honestly, sometimes there are examples of practices to stay far away from. There are online video examples of project burnout. IMHO, the desire to produce build videos is an attributing factor. Time gets spread too thin. Shooting and editing digs into build time even for movie videographers, especially for those that are still working a “9-to-5” on top of family commitments. So, share with us - when you have the time.

It’s nice to hear from someone who has an inside perspective on video editing. It’s an incredible amount of time. When first working with videographers in my full time, I was presented with a rule of thumb: every minute of final footage you see equates to an hour of editing and post-production. This was for 2:00-5:00 product videos, and didn’t include shooting, setup, etc. it blew me away. Now, I’m not quite that polished, but it takes time. 5-10 hours extra per video is what I’ve come to figure. But I absolutely love the process. It’s become a second passion alongside building the plane. It’s slowed things down, for sure, but the videos and kind words from supporters has also kept me going. Luckily I have an incredibly supporting family and partner that allow me to have two passions, as I think very few would find the time to do both. Currently my situation supports it, and I hope that continues. If push came to shove, I’d have to step away from the videos to finish the plane. But I’m hopeful we can continue both as the journey thus far has been amazing.

@@RyanFlysPDX Your having a passion for videography certainly helps, and I can see where that helps reduce post-production time. I'd send my son my raw footage to edit, but even with his generous Dad Discount, I can't afford him!

I used to love watching your videos. But you not knowing about alpaca schedules has really just made me seriously reconsider how you can even build an airplane!🤣🤣 Seriously, thanks again for my weekly dose of building fun. I enjoy your quips and watching the details of the build. It's fun for me because you document (and make fun of) the experiences every new builder goes through; I wish I had that benefit when I was thinking about building a plane. Thru you I get to relive those great moments. I have a neighbor who also documents their work. And the comments are over the top. I am glad you are dismissing those comments; it must be nice for those perfect people who have never made a mistake to criticize and know everything.

Thank you for the fantastic comment-appreciate it! It’s good to know a lot of builders out there struggle with direction, indecision, and how to set a rivet. Ok maybe it’s just me in that last one. I’ve chosen to embrace the learning process rather than refute it ever happened. Or, I don’t know, maybe some of these asshats really did crawl out of a womb knowing how to build an airplane?? There’s been a few detractors. Luckily most of them have left the channel and are someone’s BBQ channel angrily commenting on the doneness of a steak. It’s better that way.

The fun of building a Vans is learning every moment and sharing what you learned. And every night is a progressive learning moment. Vans plans it that way. And if you mess up, everything can be fixed. The struggle is real and glory is the personal growth during the journey. And I hope you didn’t direct the asshats to my BBQ channel. I’ve seen a lot of discussion on that lately. 🙂 ESP will be disabled during certain phases of flight automatically. I’m in the middle of a wiring diagram now and was literally planning the wires for AP disconnect and related items a few hours ago. Quick access was top of mind here.

@@RyanFlysPDX perfect answer. The best solution I've seen is an actual switch to disable it ESP alone, but that is a lot more work. There was a period recently where the failure rate was high. Still something to be prepared for.

I like the new camera quality, and yes you definitely should have at least gotten a photo of the alpaca to show us! I am finishing up the left elevator of my 7 build and when I was doing the rudder I re-watched your rudder video and noted you left out the 2 tip strips. Ok, I said to myself, don’t do what Ryan did… Proudly sunk the last rivet and stood back to bask in the glory of my finished rudder. I had diligently followed the instructions, surely nothing was wrong. Then I noticed 2 little pieces of primed metal on the table….facepalm. So now my fiancé has me watch your videos and if you make a comment about this or that to watch out for I am supposed to write “Ryan” in the instructions to not repeat the mistake.

Ha! This is great. The struggles of every builder, I believe. But it touches on something I really battle with when creating the videos. What about the myriad mistakes I’ve made lying in wait, undiscovered. I’d hate to have people follow me down the wrong path. A few times I’ve discovered them weeks later and tried to update folks. Ultimately we’re all responsible to follow our own instructions, and if anything I’ve highlight more pitfalls than created so I take peace of mind in that. Thanks for sharing! And sage advice above: “Don’t do what Ryan did…”

Hmm… I may have to do some research. At the class I took it was encouraged to have it as far in as possible, and for the RV 7 it would be the middle. I think some of this will be preference (torque/resolution versus throw-a tradeoff) but some will be mechanically impossible (lack of throw-servo pushed beyond 100 degrees). Thank you for pointing this out. Off to read my notes and some other reference material!

Well, it’s a whole thing. I’ve priced cameras for a while, and finally wound up with the Rebel SL3. It was at the far reaches of what I could justify spending, but offered 4K video (+ 4K timelapse), among other things. I just returned from buying a lens and saw that the D50 (mirrorless) is now in my price range and the SL3 on clearance. Frick. Oh well. Timing has never been my thing (see: Van’s airplane build). I have a 18mm-55mm, a 50mm (f/1.8), and now a 10mm-18mm. All have proven to be necessary depending on the angle and desire. Turns out cameras are a close second to airplanes as far as expensive hobbies (maybe I should add sailing to my interests, too…). But I really enjoy the improvement. As an unexpected bonus, my computer seems to handle the files a little better, so I save time in creating proxy footage.

Well, the alpacas were hard to get to. They were popular and I was sidetracked by the Nashville Hot Chicken food cart. As soon as we got close, the fella who accompanied (chaperoned?) the alpacas said that Chomp Chomp was a predator to them. I understood that you can’t often mix domesticated animals and a bloodthirsty (I assume) and murderous camelid mammal, but I assumed the alpaca was the predator here. We separated Chomp Chomp and the alpaca but then the real predators, the 5-7 year old kids, came out of freakin nowhere with sweaty palms full of feed that they were either carrying for just such an occasion or otherwise produced magically because I looked and I saw no feed bag, and these little devils were shoving their way to the front of crowd with their tiny little feed filled fists. It was about at that time I bowed out and headed home with zero footage and nary a cell phone pic for proof the entire ordeal even took place…

Awesome! For the squeezer: get as many yokes as you can afford. I love being able to squeeze. Longeron, 4”, 4” no hole. That said, sometimes my comfort with squeezing led to a lack of ability with bucking-it’s a balance. Don’t use it with an inline oiler. It likes the white grease. For the drdt, set it up correctly and lock it in. It’s worth checking still occasionally, but shouldn’t need adjustment. Build a study surround that holds the material at the correct height. Having 26” off to each side can be helpful. Biggest thing, make sure you surround, or table, keeps the same “overhang” or undercut as the drdt itself. Some materials will need to curve back down and under the machine-don’t let your table prevent this. I owe the group alpaca footage.
