Pushing Kodak Portra 400 to 800 (Street Photography POV)

2 жыл бұрынI push Kodak Portra 400 1 stop to 800 ISO in today's video on the streets of Augusta, Georgia! I wanted to test the limits of Portra 400 by pushing it and see how it retains shadow detail and how the grain and contrast increase. I was super happy with how the properly exposed images came out and I will definitely be pushing Portra 400 again in the future (probably even to 1600 and maybe even 3200)! The C41 process is not designed to be altered (pushed/pulled). Some people do it by altering the developing time but there are no official instructions from film makers on pushing/pulling c41. Black and white film is designed to be pushed/ pulled. Portra looks best overexposed by 1-2 stops and developed normally. I am guessing that your film was probably developed normally and therefore is underexposed because it was shot at 800. What kind of equipment does your lab use? I know some dip and dunk places offer push/pull and also maybe it can be done if processing by hand in tanks (not very proffessional/ can cause dev problems). If they use a minilab style machine that pulls the film through a series of tanks using leader cards, there is no way to push/pull

Thanks for the info! I’ve learned a lot about pushing and pulling since this video and I very quickly realized I was misinformed for years about pushing c41 film. I got this film developed at the Datkroom lab (which offers pushing and pulling on c41), but I will never be doing that again. I do however, push pretty much all my black and white film as I enjoy the contrast and the immediate look it gives without having to adjust much in post. Thanks for watching Garvin! :-)

Garvin, What happens when I shoot a 400 film at 1600 but my camera (Contax G1) exposes correctly? Do I just have a photo with more grain like digital?

Always when people ask (beg) for a like or a subscription I refuse, just like I refuse to buy anything what comes up in these forced commercials. But, this time, I'll make an exception. Thanks for the effort, for this upload. I enjoyed it. I was going for cheap film firstly but step by step I think it's not worth to save $5 for making what you love to make. Or create. However you call it. Summarised; thanks. Ps. You shot this in bright and harsh light conditions. I'm curious of the images you get when you're pushing Porta 400 to 800 on a more cloudy/rainy day. :)

If i'm brand new to film photography and need one body and one lens on a budget but still gets awesome shots what setup would you recommend?

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the major brand name mechanical SLR’s. You would also probably want a built in light meter so looking for one that has that would be a plus. I would probably shoot for something like a Canon F1, Pentax K1000, Nikon FG, Olympus OM-1, Canon AE-1, or Minolta X700! You don’t have to get one of these, there are a massive number of very capable 35mm film cameras, but those are a few examples! I would just look for something mechanical that can be shot without a battery, but can take a battery for the light meter if needed! As far as the lens goes, most of the cameras you buy will come with a kit prime, and unlike modern cameras the kit lenses for film cameras are usually phenomenal!

That’s a super tough question to answer tbh. They all range depending on popularity, condition, and scarcity as you’d expect since they’re all second hand. I’d say an average price between all the ones I listed is around ~$180-$250 or so. Your best bet is to find one you’re interested in and look at the recently sold copies on eBay. Make sure it’s tested before you buy it though!

Live and learn Kelsey! No doubt, if the lab pushed processed the rolls at 800 you would have secured more detail in the shadows. Nevertheless we experiment and gather insights. By the way your images at NC are great.

Did you actually change your in-camera meter to ISO 800 and underexpose with your camera's meter readings? It looks like you left it at iso 400 at 3:46. Maybe that explains the inconsistent push results? Nice vid. Portra has lots of latitude, but yeah, underexposing it isn't great.

Stopped watching as soon as he said he is shooting with the Leica....camera is waaaaaay over hyped. Every hipster snowflake has got one just because another hipster snowflake had one on their channel.

I understand! It’s definitely overhyped, but I’ve wanted one for over 5 years and I finally saved up enough money to get one for myself. It’s a great camera, but I totally see your point of view!
