“Both sides are short of ammunition, missiles and shells.”
However, Russia’s huge defence industry could allow Putin’s forces to replenish quickly, while Ukraine’s destiny is out of her hands, says General Sir Richard Barrons.

Why does she keep saying that war ship was "damaged". The ship is literally 6 feet from being wholly submerged; there are multiple pictures far and close showing how "damaged" it truly is.

It’s makes me mad that nato leaders waisted almost 2 years and let Putin regain strength. Are we forgotten that we said after WWII this never again? Are we forgotten how to fight? Many Western countries complain about not having fancy cars, and fancy homes, but if they had to live a week in Ukraine they would sell their souls to get back home. This is why Russia is getting away with what it is doing. The citizens of NATO countries have it too good. They have no immediate threats or fears of being enslaved by Russia, hence they will not put out a full committed effort.

For God sake let's get on with supplying what Ukraine needs. It's been heart breaking watching all this half hearted effort for the last two years. On top of that we should be ramping up our own defences in Europe rather than lounging around thinking war will never come to us. We should not lie back and assume the USA will provide for all our defence when article 5 gets triggered.

No Western leader has articulated an end game strategy for Ukraine to win the war, or a timeline for accomplishing this. And instead of Western citizens asking for this, people are arguing whether more or less weapons should be sent to Ukraine. As long as Western citizens are arguing over that, Western leaders can lean back and never come up with a strategy.

It takes a while for the Western industrial base to 'spin up' and produce the required goods, in particular 155mm artillery shells. A critical shortage for the Russians is aircraft. While they currently maintain an advantage they are using up 'hours' on their existing airframes. By contrast, the UAF is building itself up for example with the F16s, which will be a gamechanger. And the air defences are solid despite the imbalance. Or, put it another way, Russia hasn't been able to use its air power advantage due to Western weapon systems and this gap is closing. As the UAF expands, not only do these add capabilities, both defensively and offensively, but also access to additional ammo types and to NATO stockpiles. NATO forces are reliant on air power, and with *working through* Ukrainian forces the UAF simply hasn't been able to fulfil this role. Instead the conflict, at times, has been an artillery duel. This has suited the Russians. tl;dr - so far the Russians have failed to capitalise on the advantages they've had and now the pendulum is swinging against them as additional weapon systems come on stream.

If Ukraine conscripts its young men, they need the best in body armour, training, armoured vehicles, most modern rifles, scopes, stand-off weaponry and scores of drones that the West has to offer, while simultaneously offering more new equipment to veterans on the front line. The Ukrainian warfighter must be offered more survivability and firepower. If not, the US, EU and UK will look back and make "could have/should have/failure" part of their history.

@Times Radio, Sir Richard Barrons - whilst a very decorated general - was not the former 'Commander of the UK's armed forces'. He was the former Commander of Joint Forces Command, which coordinates the three armed services (Army, RAF and Royal Navy). The head of the armed forces is the Chief of the Defence Staff. No one seems to be pointing out the fact that the vast majority of the missiles and drones were intercepted and did not reach their targets. While the deaths of around 28 civilians are tragic for the individuals involved they have made no real impact on Ukraine's war effort. I don't understand why the attack is referred to as retaliation for sinking the Rus warship by the reporter. It takes far longer than a couple of days to plan and execute a missile/drone attack. I wish the Times would employ interviewers who know more about the topics they attempt to discuss.

The West, apart from the US has barely enough weapons left to defend theirselves. Whilst ammo and tank production in Russia is state run and owned, in the West it is privately owned companies. Russia is working 24 hour shifts to produce shells, the West hasn't even put in the order for them and privately owned companies will not order their workers to work 24/7. I fear, sadly, it will be Ukraine that will soon run out of ammo and it will be game over. Most NATO countries didn't pay 2% of GDP and in the case of the UK, closed down many ammo storage units over the last 20 years.

The West has plenty of resources. What exactly is the West defending itself from? Currently the 'Red Army' is floundering in Ukraine, with approximately 17% of Ukraine occupied. The RAF is in NO WAY committed to the fight, and one of the major capabilities of a modern air force is ground attack/AFV destruction. A key component of NATO forces is air power and should an army try to advance into defences with robust air defences the end is always the same: destruction of the attacker. And then look at the Poles. They have a highly capable and highly professional army. In fact that was true in 1939, and they held out against BOTH the fascist Germans and the Red Army, alone, for two weeks. Then they lacked heavy equipment and air power. And that's TWO NATO countries. The Finns and Swedes are very capable militarily, as are the Baltic states. tl;dr - the West have been preparing for this for a long time.

Get some grip on reality for once please. Russia is only short of patience, not ammunition. It's NATO countries has been dried up completely. US dried up to a such severe extent, they were forced to look for ammo across all globe in order to avoid using strategical reserves. And in a desperation because of lack of 155mm shells, they allowed Ukraine to use cluster munitions instead. Whole world has seen this moment of hypocrisy. UK has lost entire stock of 155mm shells including reserves, completely emptied NLAWs reserves and is unable to create an expeditionary force due to lack of operable tanks. Few months ago they cannibalized 40 Challengers 2 tanks because they were completely dead and that was the best solution to deal with them. They were supposed to replenish it since, but are still unable due to production line suffering from lack of resources, poor management and financial issues with companies which supposed to replenish all that was lost, but are unable to do that. Do i really need to name every country of NATO and how it has been dried up in ammo since?

In the West, because this is exactly what the Ukrainian army has been preparing for for years (even before the start of its military operation) in order, using the Avdiivka and Maryinsky fortified areas as a springboard, to make its "drang nah osten" - a breakthrough to Donetsk, followed by access to the border of the Rostov region with all the ensuing consequences for the residents of Donbass and the territories of Donbass adjacent to it belong to her. Ukraine has been quite a dead end for Russia after almost 10 years of war. I would suggest Putin take my offer of expanding into the Sahel like Mali. Russia can gain confidence in African developemnt and investment in the Sahel. This will de-escelate things with Ukraine and eventually lead to peace.

How many times does it have to be explained that it does not cost American tax payers more than a few cents on each dollar that is publicized. The US has 6,000 Old version Bradley's in stock. You don't use them, unless there is a war with China you will never lose them. It costs money to rent the warehouse and then bring them out once a year. There are other examples of weapons the US military no longer uses but has in stock! On ammunition the US taxpayer saves money. The stock has an age , New stuff and older stuff. The old stuff has to be destroyed as it expires it is cheaper to send ammo with a shelf life under 2 years to Ukraine then planning on moving it to be destroyed.
