James, our master of microscopes, recently received a package from a coral farm in Germany. We’ve explored some of the microscopic creatures and bristle worms that were living and thriving in those packages in previous videos. But today we’re here to focus on the main event: the corals.

Algae is mostly a good thing in every environment, but in small ponds it can become a real problem because too much algae can end up suffocating the fish within the water

Are you forgetting all of the protists of this channel? A photosynthetic one appears a lot of the time. It is like when you learn about a new protist group your first thought is now "is there a photosynthetic one?" The answer is usually yes, but they are a small subset.

James needs a white light/pol epi-illumination setup so he can look at thick things like corals without having to slice them into thin sections. It might only take a filter cube change since he's got epi-fluorescence already. Even better if we could get him one of those inverted microscopes that make it much easier to deal with large subjects like a macroscopic piece of coral in a petri dish. There seems to be an error in the video at about 4:10 to 4:30 where hank says (and the caption as well) that the light illuminating the chlorophyll is red but it looks to me like the excitation light is blue or UV, I've never gotten chlorophyll autofluorescence with a red excitation light.

Valid point, the excitation fluorescence start around the green to violet. (Btw if anyone have seen purple fluorescence excitation on coral let me know)

Thank you so much!!! I wish I could get reflected light unit for my scope but it would be even better to get an inverted microscope for stuff like this! I checked the labels and I don't think there is a mistake with them, I also used a desk lamp. It adds a weird effect maybe that caused the confusion. Chlorophyll shows autofluorescence under any wavelength, maybe you cannot observe it because of the properties of your emission filter. -James

Sincere comment alert - I have spent the better part of the past 2 years becoming and staying germaphobic and defending those habits in myself. I’ve been using this channel for a few weeks for doses of calm and interesting in my day, reminding myself of how much i liked microscopes as a kid. All of a sudden, I realized how reassuring it is to understand that there ARE billions of little alive (and otherwise) things in the unseen world that surrounds us. But I have been getting to know them a little better and feeling no anxiety at all. Thank you to this entire team for putting your content out there with so much love and polish!

Considering the heat and CO2 levels of the early Triassic, I wonder if corals had a different algal symbiosis partner before the Permian extinction.

Even more interesting is considering the heavy sedimentation and rapid climatic changes (a few brief ice ages and then some warmer periods) of the Late Devonian extinction. There was even likely a component of invasive species wiping out more localized forms of many species as Pangaea assembled. I really wonder what those pressures did to corals, considering the vast reef ecosystems of the Paleozoic. The late Paleozoic is so important and so weird.

This one looks a little sluggish. I think a good saltwater aquarist needs to help James set up a happier aquarium for his little guys to grow and make scum for him to look at.

I asked for coral a while back. Thank you if you took note of that! Maybe you could do a video on the anatomy of micriorganisms? About the organelles and what they do? It was probably already kind of mentioned in passing, I suppose.

I'm brought close to tears watching this footage as an Australian who is only an arms length for 1000's of kilometres of reef currently undergoing their 6th mass bleaching event, the information of which is being withheld as we're weeks away from an election, but has been leaked nonetheless. While many of the organisms covered on this wonderful channel can survive deep space or total desiccation, the reefs around the world will one day solely exist in artificial environments as our oceans acidify and raise in temperature.

On the plus side, you'll be happy to know that Australia's reefs are a tad more sensitive than many others. In fact the reefs of New Caledonia have proved remarkably resistant to pretty much all the crap humans have thrown at them, from mining waste to global warming. Its still devastating to watch as our species trashes the planet like never before, and much will be lost, but life _does_ find a way. Also of note is that New Caledonia has a myriad of relict species, including some in the reefs. This may not be their first rodeo with regards to mass extinction events. Just a fun little thought I've considered.

A seedbank is one decent contingency plan to save species. But, another would be to sequence and catalog the genomes of our flora and fauna. Surely we'll develop the tech to make "seeds"?

Many organisms will either anchor themselves to something or have something that let's them control their position. Another could be that they added something like pine sap to the drop to help slow things down.

So I'm not an expert but I think only something the size of a bacteria would be visibly affected by Brownian Motion. Eukaryotes like algae are much bigger.

You need something really small to show Brownian motion. I think they have a video showing Brownian motion in some crystals trapped in a vacual of a diatom or ciliate. You have to remember that in order to show Brownian motion you need something small enough that individual molecules knocking into it will impart an observable change in velocity.

When James gathers samples himself, and they have been fully studied or just take up too much room, he can return them to the same spot he gathered them from. There's no danger to the ecosystem doing this. But with these samples, they came from a different country, and are not in any way close to native to where James is. What will James do with these samples when he is done, or need more room? Will they be returned to the coral farm?

It's not coming directly to the ocean in some random spot, the corals you guys see and more of the time nowadays aquacultured (growing in aquarium) or mariculture (Growing in ocean like a little farm on the shore)

Probably has an aquarium for them or thrown away as those corals are aquacultured for hobbyists, easily reproduce and are not endangered

Ahh nothing I receive can be dangerous to the local environment, there are regulations for that and you cannot ship things without proper permits. I keep the coral samples in my flat with hundreds of other samples! It's just me and my two cats in a three room flat! :) -James

Coincido contigo, la de ingles es más natural, al parecer KZfaq esta haciendo pruebas de esta nueva caracteristica con algunos canales como este (al parecer es una voz lograda por inteligencia artificial o algo así) y supongo que una ves que pase la fase ''beta'' esto se hará una caracteristica general, lo cual es muy bueno pues hay mucha gente que no habla inglés y que no va a leer subtitulos y que se esta perdiendo de una gran riqueza de contenido, saludos.

@@AquaSplendor that is very individualist and very narrow. Humans need to consume many things in order to survive. The problem isn't the consuming, it's the what and the how. Pretty much every problem we currently have is a result of ignoring the obviously better but more "expensive" option in favour of cheaper and faster, but not on an end consumer level. End consumers can only choose between the options presented, and the options presented will always be the cheapest and fastest version of whatever that is, even with regards to "high-end goods". The problem isn't consumption, it's profit.

if we can look at microbes under a microscope and they have no idea that we are there what if there are beings orders of magnitudes bigger than us that are observing us using something other than sight sound touch etc. We'd have no idea that there are there

That Xenia looks a little sluggish. Normally, their little “heads” are opening and closing like crazy. Is it unhappy or just tired? Maybe an expert aquarist can help James set up an ideal environment for his little guys to grow and thrive and produce scum for him to find treasures in.

(zooxanthellae) When the coral bleach it's likely to die(most of the time), in this instance the sps coral he tried are probably a skeleton by now, they do not support very well the stress of environment change. It's probably a frag aquacultured if people wondering, but I can only assume.

Until they starve to death shortly after. When the first turn white they are still alive. You are seeing their white skeletons through their transparent flesh. When they yellow a little afterwards they are dead dead. That is their flesh decaying on their skeletons.

As far as I'm concerned animal rights activists need to get there priorities straight,,, until humanity can tackle the cruelty we still practice on each other we will not address cruelty to animals with any impactful results.... their effort is like pissing up a wall in the way they approach it.. Human desire and willingness to be cruel in general is where the real fight is ,,,,,,you can not tackle animal cruelty with tackling human cruelty.... Hate the advertisements and sponsorship, please go back to the old format. I supported the channel back when it was Patreon-only but sadly the advertisements ruined that; why do I need to donate my money when there's a corporation backing it? The main reason I used to watch these before bed was for the relaxing and calm nature of the content, but that has been tainted. The advertainment plugs at the start and finish have been tacky and ruined the true experience of your channel.
