With regard to elbow pain from the squat; what I’ve learned is that with a long forearm to upper arm ratio, it is counterproductive to attempt a very narrow grip. The forearms will simply not fit in the space between the elbows and the barbell, and you will overload your elbows. Using a wider grip, while reducing back tightness, is the solution I’ve found that fixes this for me. If your intern coach preaches narrow grip uber alles, you may need to help him/her understand that. Use a grip just wide enough that your elbows are not being loaded by the barbell, even if you have the shoulder mobility to go more narrow.

The tendon segment was spot on. Anytime I damage leg tendons or ligaments in jiu jitsu I spend the next week on my mountain bike, resting just makes it ping, pop and feel like it's about to explode every time I stand up. The bike, however, fixes it right up, often in less than a week.

Mark, your analogy of the squat bail out is spot on. I watched two young, skinny guys bail out back to back on a 275 lb. squat. One idiot bailed and then the other idiot bailed. I explained to my training partner that over the past 40 years I have never bailed out on a squat. Not an option!

I'll bet you can set up an incline bench in a rack with spotter STRAPS rather than pins, and have it work out just fine. The reason being that the straps can be set up at an angle, rather then only perfectly horizontal.

@HAL-dm1eh

It fits in line with the two major studies of healing tendinopathy. One study showed doing 3 sets of 15 reps of eccentric only work (twice daily, for 3 weeks) healed it in 60% of cases. The other "Scandinavian model" showed an even higher success rate, with the only difference being people should push through the pain, as opposed to the former where people did what was pain free.

@@woulditwork7356 You tried eccentric work for years?
@HAL-dm1eh
@HAL-dm1eh 4 жыл бұрын
@Dr retardo The studies were done on those with Achilles injuries. They had them set their toes on a step about the height of a curb and lift up using both feet and then lowering their body (eccentric phase) using only the problem foot. It wasn't reported how much weight was actually on the problem foot during concentric phase but I'm pretty sure it varied, knowing people.

I had terrible outer elbow issues also shooting down the forearm and started a job unloading tires off a semi trailer and within a month it was 75-80% healed. I deadlifted 260 for reps yesterday and it was tender after but today feels great!!! Using it was the only thing that helped. Rip is right you need to contract it and start using it within a few days so it can’t scar over.

I have bailed on a squat, maybe 2 or 3 times. Each times it meant dumping the weight on the safeties in a rack. Very discouraging moment. However, nowadays I only have a squat stand, not a full rack & no safeties, but I'm still not worried about it. What I have found is, my body just won't let me sink a squat if I can't bring it back up. That's how people end up doing half squats right? It's too heavy to go all the way down. So it's just a question of not being too crazy. Every time I've had bail on a lift, in retrospect, I should have known better than to try. Same for every time I got injured in a lift. I think if you pay attention to your own body/mind, you should never have to bail on any lift. Just don't think you have to try something you can't do. There is definitely a line at which you're screwed, a weight you cannot lift, no matter how strong you are.

I'm the 6' skinny guy with ok lifts who should eat more. I maybe should have mentioned that when I started lifting I weighed 60kg and I've definitly gained weight. My weight gain has stalled because 1) I work manual labour and burn around 3500kcal a day, 2) I have use of being a bit lighter in my work and hobbies 3) I'm not looking to get into power/strenghtlifting and I'm fine with not pulling 250kg, at least currently, 4)I have plenty of allergies that limit what I can eat and I in general don't enjoy eating either. My 6 years of lifting haven't been consistant either, I've had unrelated injuries and other issues coming in the way, sometimes taking 6 months off lifting. But I've always gotten back with the basic linear program and progressed every time. All this was unrelated to the actual question I was asking though... And yes, I've lifted 70/110/150/190 at 78kg bodyweight.

Hey man I was in the same boat as you a couple years ago, and honestly I think you might be overthinking this man. Just eat, eat as much as you possibly can, and don't worry about getting fat. Rip, @45:05 you missed the important part of the question. Yeah, it was badly worded about "bailing out of a squat." You talk about needing to lift weights that are at the limit of your capacity. Sure. But what happens when you mess up and exceed that limit? How do you safely handle getting stuck at the bottom? Have some power rack pins set at just below the bottom of your squat (in the absence of a spotter)?

@starting strength I think the golfers elbow is not tendinitis but its tendinopathy. The research has showed that conditions like golfers elbow, tennis elbow, painful achilles tendon etc. is not caused by inflammation but mainly because of cell apoptosis and neovascularization. And yes, like Mark pointed out, tendinopathy does not get "cured" by rest. Anyways, great podcast, keep up the good work.

@MartinSwain
@MartinSwain 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry not a replacement. If you can do 10 pushups, you're not going to gain much more by doing a hundred. If you can do 10 pushups it's time to start benching & adding weight. For weight training we typically do sets of 5, but sometimes as few as 3 and sometimes as many as 10. More than 10 doesn't do much for your strength. So if you can do 10 pushups, time to increase the loading, ie, bench press.

Assuming you know more than climate scientists and lecturing us that understand the science? It is important to realize that those experienced in this science are different from those experienced in political debate. They are not one in the same. I would never want a politician arguing my expertise in science for me. If you are open to learning, the arguments you gave are easily explained away and have been addressed.The public discourse on this topic is predictable and associated with party, which is disappointing. I wouldn't even trust getting road directions from a politician without being skeptical. The arguments you laid out are analogous to someone getting all their strength advice from crossfit: a bit of truth and a whole lot of poorly misunderstood training for injury instead of strength. All that to say...We want your strength expertise and experience, which is substantial, well informed, and practiced. Please dont turn this into a Limbaugh show or Maddow show for that matter that needlessly divide Americans into two groups of zealots for their gain instead of focusing on our common condition as Americans. Anyway, thank you for your contribution to the strength domain in which you have helped me understand greatly.
