One of the best Q&A's , great questions from your subscribers and logical and sound advice given. For those that don't know; I think it works out close to 10hrs of labour per cord....right from felling to stacking.....that's splitting by hand, one person...I usually work a few hours here and there...I'm make sure I'm 2 years ahead of the game, no more than that as you don't want your hardwood completely dried out....12-21% moisture content is perfect for my area and my stove....I'm not sure about all the pine/lodge pole you will probably be burning.

You guys are doing a great job. I've lived in AK for 37 years. ( I'm 59 YO) I just bought 140 acres outside of Big Lake.. 4 mile from the end of the road. I'm just getting started with off grid. I've watched a lot of people try and live the off grid life over the years.and fail .. Mostly due to lack of common sense. Maybe we'll run into each other in Wasilla? I'm living in Anch. full time for now..weekends at the cabin. Until I can retire. 1-2 years. Have a cozy cabin and all that I need at this point. but always another project..... You guys will be just fine!

I’m coming up on my two year anniversary of moving from a townhouse in the Philadelphia suburbs to the side of a mountain homestead in New England. It’s encouraging to go back and watch these older videos and to hear you did this for 4 years before making this move. It gives me some grace in my learning curve. But necessity breeds creativity and I’ve been amazed at how much I can do with sticks and jute twine!

Hi art from alberta. So enjoy your videos. It is so enjoyable to se a married couple that are real friends. I understand the seasons being a Canuck and having worked for 2 years in the arctic islands the only month I was not there was July. I grew up on a grain farm in Alberta and my working life in the oil patch retired and living in Alberta. Enough about me. Having grown up on a farm I love and appreciate your struggles by living of grid. Eric and Arieal I so admire your work ethic. Arielle I think you are wonderful photographer. Thank you both for sharing your life with us.

Thankyou, you two teach me almost every vedio. Great ideal of buying vehicle instead of a uhaul! I've wanted to live in Alaska most of my adult life. Off grid in Oklahoma and I love it but realize Alaska would be a big upgrade in everything especially cutting firewood. I still do at my age but really it would double or triple. I cant tell you how blessed you are to have each other and you working together in joint effort. Alot of couples work against each other or one has to bear the lion's load alone. I pray for constant love and unity and strength & divine protection over you two, your animals and all home, buildings & equipment.

She is 81 with dementia and needs to be warm. I am aged myself and have been to AK 4-5 times in the Coast Guard and visiting and loved it. Cheers.

Yeah but they cost a lot of money to buy and install. Is the Federal gov offering tax incentives for that? NYS does I have not seen even one of them in any footage in Alaska. It may just be too cold or damp. Research this well.

@@charlenekociuba7396 What i have used to install my wind mill is with an old television antenna tower. I got for free and only had to adapted the head of the tower to receive the wind mill.Wind mills are sold with different capacity and a big variety of prices. I think it completes the solar panel since here in Quebec Canada the winters are long. If you want to see my install send me a E-mail at pjegodin@hotmail.com and i will send you pics.

Great Q&A---and I have watched a ton of them on KZfaq. Sincere, honest, funny, and inspiring. I see both of you still have your topknots so being cooped up hasn't had you going after each other with scalping knives! I haven't read all of the previous comments but: (a) how will you store any meat/fish you happen to harvest: Smoke, freeze??? And where will you store those treasures: (b) Your growing season is, I believe, around 3 months at the outside---is canning how you are going to preserve your bounty? and (c) are you planning on expanding your current house sometime or are you going to concentrate on the Greenhouse and your other property? Thanks. . .
@SimpleLivingAlaska
@SimpleLivingAlaska 5 жыл бұрын
KlazyZ, we do plant to add an underground food storage area, smoke meat and can. I think our growing season is closer to 120 days but yes storage and preservation is going to be our primary focus. We do plan to add a large wood area and shed, maybe a carport this year but most likely not the bathroom (at this point not sure if it will be an add on or a separate room). I think we are trying to tackle each thing as it arises. Most likely we will be just clearing a driveway and getting wood from the new property. Appreciate the comments :)
