Q&A: How to stop on downhill slopes on inline skates & rollerblades. Slopes training tutorial

This question from Barry Reynolds is possibly the most important issue facing #inline skaters; how to control speed and come to a complete stop on downhill slopes. It's not an easy thing to do and demands that you have at least 1 good, fluent stopping method on the flat (that already stops you from your highest speeds). Only then are you ready for slopes training practice.
The #powerslide is by far the most effective stopping method (other than the Heel Brake of course) for slopes as it allows for accurate stopping and will not strain your muscles as the T-stop would. The Powerslide is achievable if learned correctly (even from a forwards transition entry), but it will take several months of conscious practice to build up the speed of entry so it's useful in real life situations.
Slopes should be avoided until you absolutely know that your methods are trustable, otherwise you are taking serious risks. Many falls and accidents happen when skaters cannot stop on slopes, so be mindful of your skill level and stay on flat surfaces while working on learning and improving your stopping methods. Nothing is more important than this as a skater.
The Skatefresh Method shows you how to build all the foundation skills you need to accomplish each skill in turn, ideally BEFORE you then attempt the skill (and possibly fail).
What if you learned new skills in this progressive way? You'd suffer less frustration and achieve noticeable improvements every time you skate. This makes the whole experience much more fun, safe (fewer fails & falls) and effective.
Do you learn new skills by just trying to do them over and over?
How's that working out for you? Let me know in the comments.

My advice, don't give up on the heel brake unless you've got seriously good alternatives that you can crack out on bad tarmac, around potholes or in a crowded area.

I COMPLETELY agree with you! The heel brake is an awesome stop, the best in fact when compared with all the other stops particularly in terms of difficulty. It is by far the most effective stopping method requiring the least amount of ability (beginners can learn it in 30 minutes if taught correctly). I always advise not removing the heel brake unless you have 2-3 "seriously good alternatives" for stopping. I'm glad you don't need convincing, but unfortunately far too many skaters remove their heel brake and then suffer from not being able to stop!

@@SkatefreshVideos Thanks Asha, indeed, and those skaters may well be put off skating entirely if they then have a bad fall from not being able to stop!

Hi Asha, this is Barry Reynolds commenting from Murray's account. Thanks for the advice. I'll work on that this week. The tricky part I find is turning my rear foot backwards but once I've worked that out, the rest should be easier.

Try hopping the transition (try it out on grass first a few times) as this will reduce the hip flexibility you need an might help you commit to getting that skate to backwards as quickly as possible. Just keep the speeds low and go for form over velocity. Speed will come when the form is reliable every time. Give my love to Murray! I hope he's proud of your improvements.

Great vid. I use powerslide on slopes all the time but, as you say, I need to build confidence doing them at greater speed. In the right conditions I'll do slalom turns or T-stop, or even 'bomb' or small slope with a clear run-off. But on steep slopes it's repeat powerslides from top to bottom.

Well done for having developed your repertoire of stopping methods so you have these options. Yes the Powerslide challenge is to not give up in the process of building up the speed. I suggest every time you skate to make sure you do 5-10 Powerslide's and then slowly over time they will get faster and more fluent. also, well done for only bombing hills where you can see the run off....otherwise it's one of the most dangerous things one can do on skates. Keep at it. You're doing great!

Great video as always. straight to the point. clear, easy to follow. I live on a hill and in a hilly area. Had to learn to take hills early on. I prefer the soul slide because my neck is messed up and I can't look back easily, but also because It's quite flexible. You can turn the slide as you go, and change the open angle. As you dump speed, you can more easily regroup into a carve and turn back uphill, hockey stop, or use a speed skating stop. Just gives more options.

Yes the Soul slide is great if you have the flexibility and you're lucky that you do. Having a toll kit of available stops is the best way to be and you've got that happening also. Options is what makes skate life safe and effective. Well done You!!!

I was training using exactly that method. It's still scary to go too fast, but as you said, I hope to improve with time and increase the speed slowly. I also do the soul slide, but my control is not as good as with the powerslide.

For me, the turning at high speeds is very scary. I get scary at high speeds rolling forward, not even thinking about turning backwards into a powerslide :D

@lydson Keep at it. The Powerslide is worth the time it takes to build up the speed. This will take several months but it's the only way to get there. In fact all stopping methods go through this process in that we need to build up the speeds we can perform them at slowly over time. You can't just do things super fast and expect them to work. It's a process.

@@markoliberty7581 You must listen to that fear as it's telling you exactly what your speed limits are. Fear = "Too fast" from your body. You need to stay within your speed limits and transitioning for a Powerslide needs to be done from very, very slow speeds at first. It's a process and it wont happen over night, but it's well worth committing to.

i don’t live in an area with big buildings and lots, where’s the best place to skate? im looking for smooth asphalt with not many rocks (the park i would skate at is riddled with stray gravel). what kinds of places would have paved asphalts?

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. If you don't have a park with smooth surface you can look for parking lots or basket/volleyball places.
