Question: Best practices for permaculture in hot / arid climates, sequence of permaculture implementation steps in desert locations?
- Anti-evaporation is the priority in hot, arid climates, so we have to increase shade, wind buffering, and use plenty of hardy, legume trees with deep rooting fruit trees.
- Caliche is a hard layer that requires smashing up, after which trees can be planted in holes or pits.
- There should be 50% shade on top of gardens (annual vines), 30% from the east (deciduous vines), 75% from the west (evergreen vines), and about 20% from the sun side (south or north).
- The other goal is to sink water away from the sun, into swales or ephemeral ponds and lakes, using any hard surface as a means of collection.
- Crop fields should be on contour and narrow (able to be shaded), with 70% of the landscape devoted to trees.
- Get this design wrong and it results in a saltiness, but get this right and there will be very high nutrient soil to work with.

Southern California desert here, zone 9b. Lots of mesquites and Fan Palms. I have a chipper shredder and have used it with these trees and my Barhi date palms. I have a Screw Bean planted in the center of the vegetable garden for future shading. I have to use shade cloth at this time on the west side of the garden. But have plans for grapes on the west side to help with this. My garden is bordered with tire planters and they get too hot in the summer to support most plants but I found that the asparagus survived 95 degree F soil during this time. I am having to do lots of research and experimentation but am growing year round food.

Majid, I saw your comment that you are in the UAE, and I see that you know about permaculture and have gathered a few permaculturists. I may be a few years late. Majid how can I get involved? I want to learn how to work with the use landscape more. Thank you.

I'm from Ghardaia, in Algeria desert, arid climate, you're right, most planted lands here are oasis with tall palm trees they provide shade for smaller trees, and the smaller trees provide shade for few vegetables under them traditional agriculture is impossible here there are people who grow vegetables in medium sized plots with lot of watering, and some use shaded tunnels.

Would you say this also applies to semi-arid grasslands? I am studying up to design for BSk climate zone and found a lot of this very helpful :)

I have a question; would calechi soil in the AZ South be helped by layers of wood chips over a couple years to help loosen the soil?
