"I am a young Muslim in the US. I'm struggling with my faith. My question is, why should we follow Muhammad instead of Jesus?" Dr. Shabir Ally says that while God favours some prophets over others, Muslims are instructed in the Quran to believe in all of them and draw no distinction between them. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent to human beings as God's final prophet, so we are told in the Quran to obey and follow him. But in doing so, Muslims understand that they're following all the prophets indirectly. Often the question is extended, and people draw comparisons, saying that Muhammad was violent but Jesus was peaceful. Dr. Shabir says their social and political contexts differ. Muslims had to rise in defense of themselves under the leadership of Muhammad to protect their society from invaders attacking them due to their religious beliefs. In contrast, in the Quran, Jesus is represented as a peaceful person. And yet Dr. Shabir points out that in the biblical record, the underlying motif was for Jesus to be son of David, the Messiah, and his role was to overthrow Roman rule to establish the Kingdom of God on earth. According to the Bible, he was crucified, so he didn't fulfill this role of violent Messiah. Dr. Shabir says the New Testament was written at a time when Christians didn't have power and could face severe persecution from the Roman authorities had they exhibited any sort of inclination to overthrow Roman rule, so they de-emphasized the Messiah role and represented Jesus as the Prince of Peace.

Also brother rely solely on the Quran. If you rely on the Quran with clean intention you will have no doubt that you’re on the Straight Path if indeed you are. I find it irritating sometimes when they go on with the Arabic. I have credibility in you-no need to regurgitate to sound like a fancy parrot 🦜-now speak in English (or whatever language is yours) for I am keen to listen and learn. Also the Hadiths are BS and written by man 300 years after the death of the Prophet (PBH). Merry Christmas and Peace and Welcome to Islam.

By saying, that Jesus has died before completing his message which included violence is a big error on you side. "Jesus died exactly when his mission was complete", his message was calling for " peace and love and forgiveness".. and everything without a doubt went perfectly according to God's plan. Jesus's life is a perfect example of total surrender to God's will.

'By praying the way like the Prophet Muhammad prayed, we are automatically praying as other prophets before him prayed.' A definition of the term 'pray' is important. When Jesus fell on his face to pray, he was clearly making a supplication not performing the shalah. Muslims make supplications by raising the palms of their hands facing upwards. And they fall on their faces when they perform the shalah which is made up of a number of postures.

I thought Messiah means an anointed. Why is shabir saying Messiah means a prophet or king. Even in arabi Maseeh means someone who has been touched. In this case touched by the arch angel Gabriel. .

Dr Shabir, what a wise person and what an ambassador for Islam and perhaps all people of the book. I have heard it said many times the Muhammad was a man of violence unlike Jesus. Bear in mind that I'm not actually technically a Muslim I feel many are not comparing apples with apples. Let's look at Jesus, he was a man of peace but he also lived in a very controlled environment, the Roman's ruled with an iron fist otherwise I'm sure the Jews would really have killed him first. Now let's look at Prophet Muhammad, born into the lawless wild west where the only rule was the tribal. He had to marry into tribes to make pacts just like the European royalty did. Often the violence was against people who wanted to stab him inthe back. One man united the Arabs and dormed an Islamic empire that went into North Africa and pushed in Europe through Spain. Remarkable.

Very cool discussion! Personally, I think that when the Quran says to obey God and obey the messenger, it might not actually be saying to follow Muhammad, but rather, to obey the message that he delivered from God. The problem with the Quran just saying to obey God is that it wouldn't be new instructions for a polytheist, a Jewish person, a Christian person, etc. Such a person would already feel that they're following God. Interestingly, in Sura 46 Verse 9, Muhammad says "I am not a novelty among the messengers, nor do I know what will happen to me or to you. I follow nothing other than what is revealed to me. I am no more than a clear warner."

@@ML-jw8kf I don't think all of the Hadith are necessarily manmade, but certainly a lot of them are. To me, they're kind like the New Testament of the Bible, which arguably may have some accuracy, but is still largely heresay from multiple anonymous authors

Jesus actually had a lot of negative things to say. I don't know why everyone thinks he was nice and positive. He said to come be his disciple you must hate. He called the Canaanite woman a dog and tried to ignore her. He left Mary standing out in the cold and denied she is his mother. There are many examples of Jesus being negative and rude and disrespectful. This is why I love Jesus so much he is so real.

If Dr. Ally knew any of the prophets, he would know that none of them emphasized the physical details of prayer that the Muslims obsess over. The emphasis is always on a heart that seeks God in all aspects of life and the humility to seek God in the manner he has prescribed. In the Old Testament this meant adherence to the Temple worship and Levitical priesthood as laid out by the Old Covenant, and in the New Testament this is superseded by the perfect temple and the perfect priest, Jesus Christ.

When HE, the spirit of truth shall come, HE, shall lead you unto ALL TRUTHS. it is expedient for me that I go away. For if I go not away, HE, the comforter will not come. But if I go I would send him. HE, will not speak of himself. But whatever HE hears, so shall he speak. HE, shall glorify me. And all the prophets of Allah are ordained to follow a similar format for worshiping the one God.

Even though there's almost no information about Muhammad in the Quran itself, it's also impossible to base the Islamic practice on Jesus or any other Prophet, because the Quran doesn't have much information about them as well. However, about 85% of the Islamic sources are the Hadith/Sirah, which are focused almost exclusively on Muhammad and his personal companions, that's why the mainstream Islam is almost exclusively about Muhammad.

@@ML-jw8kf Agree, but keep in mind that the Quran is such a short book, with so little information about its authors, or even the previous Prophets, that the Hadith/Sirah are absolutely necessary for Islam to be functional in practice.

Romans put prisoners on the bar for several days even up to a week before they die...so Jesus never died on the T bar!

They’re all equal. It is the disbelievers who say we will take some and leave others. All prophets are the same. One isn’t better than the other. It doesn’t say “we have favored some among others,” it says “we have caused some to exceed others [in tasks], we gave Jesus Son of Mary the gospel, we gave David the book of psalms….” To exceed others means in tasks. In what they do. Not to favor some among others. Also: If you say Muhammad you say them all. Muhammad means from Jesus to Abraham. Also: following doesn’t mean emulating him to a T. I’m 36 now and still single… I have failed to emulate The Prophet (PBH) because I didn’t marry a lady named Khadija (PBH) at 25 when she was 40…. So I might as well kill myself now right?! The Hadiths are BS. Yep. I just said that. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.

If I was a Muslim, I would be anxious about not following the only prophet who was born of a virgin, the greatest woman ever; the only prophet who was pure and sinless; the only prophet who was a giver of life; the only prophet who said "I am the first and the last"; the only prophet who ascended to Heaven and is with the Father in Heaven, and will return and be king. I would be nervous. Very nervous. That "prophet" was clearly a lot more than just a prophet. All praise be to God.

Don't you think Elijah ascended in to Heaven? Scripture seems to indicate that he was taken and ascended in to heaven. Some people argue that he was not taken to heaven, and that he was just spared death like Enoch. However scripture indicates that Enoch did not experience death and was taken from life directly to Sheol without experiencing death. For Elijah it seems clear that he was taken to heaven and ascended in to heaven. What actually sets Jesus apart is that he came down from Heaven. No other prophet came down from Heaven only Jesus. You are right Jesus is more than a prophet. He is the priest king the new Melchizedek. This is why Jesus never cared to preach anything more than the coming Kingdom. He did not need to make a kingdom or order on earth. His kingdom has been established in Heaven.

The only purpose of Islam is to promote Mohammad, they say they love Jesus Christ but they discredit him in every way. At no time the scriptures say that the Lord Jesus Christ came to dethrone Rome. In the Bible the Lord Jesus Christ speaks about his crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and second coming, where he'll judge mankind.

Why do they pretend to like Jesus? What do they hope to gain from it? In this video Dr. Shabir quotes Jesus in Quran 19:33 and Jesus says the day he will die and be raised to life. In a different video Dr. Shabir said that Muslims think Jesus did not die and so was never raised from the dead. It would seem that Islam is nonsensical. Perhaps some grains of truth are there but it is just a jumbled mess?

The text under the video states, "Dr. Shabir points out that in the biblical record, the underlying motif was for Jesus to be son of David, the Messiah, *and his role was to overthrow Roman rule to establish the Kingdom of God on earth* . " "According to the Bible, *he was crucified, so he didn't fulfill this role of violent Messiah* ." Shabir- So this is your conclusion about the Biblical Jesus? I hope not since the New Testament narrative never suggests Jesus came to overthrow the government in any way. And to suggest that the Kingdom of GOD was to be built upon the bloody deaths of humans is a blasphemy against GOD Who needs no one and nothing to build His Kingdom *WHICH IS HEAVEN* . Jesus famously said "he who lives by the sword shall die by the sword". In so many of Muhammad's military battles, this came deadly true for many of his followers. And Muhammad was not merely being defensive as you suggest, but he actively attacked peaceful Jews, pagans and Christians in order to force himself and his religion upon them! The number of swords among the followers of Jesus were 2 (TWO!) swords! Now what conquering could 2 swords do against the entire Roman army? None, except to claim that Jesus was among those who deserved to be crucified along with the thieves on Calvary--- IF you were looking for any kind of thin proof to get rid of him. It's interesting that you, a prominent muslim cleric, define the Messiah of Christianity to be a military leader and conqueror, while as a Muhammadan, you cannot explain how your own Isa fulfills the role of Messiah except to say he was anointed-- while not identifying when and by whom, nor specifying any of the hundreds of Jewish prophecies to be about his coming. Muhammad fits the role of a conquering theocratic military commander; maybe he is the Muhammadan meshiach to the Jews?

I think the answer is to follow Jesu s simply because he is Holy, of unique birth, sinless, with power to perform miracles including raising the dead plus he is right now in heaven, while Muhammad demonstrates none of these things. That's why your followers are concerned Dr. Ali

Mankind will follow the noble prophet for he represent universal values, brotherhood... if there is something that make his followers different then its only in the expression and exclusivity of our worships and rituals.. the christians prays but we prays five time a day, the jews fast but we fast on ramadan... but our universal values are the same... our commonalities the kalimatis sawa shared by all nations.. if killing is wrong in Islam then it wrong in japan in brazil in china etc...

And that is the fundamental problem of Islam. That you are required to follow a man who lacks character, courage, conviction, compassion leading to confusion in history thus the Quran is not from the One True God. Calling Jesus anything else is simply muddying the water. You shouldn’t follow a prophet who lack the above mention details. He is not the universal prophet! Just because it is said so I’m the Quran! Jesus does say his message was first to the lost Jews and then to be spread to all humans! Muhammad never left Arabia! The Quran apart from the Hadith is so unclear - so to say the Quran was the final book for mankind is false. The statements making the Quran say things that are not found within the Quran but only later in the Hadith 200 years later only after they came across the greatness of the New Testament! The myth about woman right is so wrong. Read the Hadith and ask where will the majority of women be according to your prophet? Come to the real Jesus not the fable Isa
