We are the first foreign boat to arrive in Australia - and no one has any idea what to do with us...
This is a new chapter in our story. Thank you Australia. Thank you Queensland. We are VERY happy to be here!
We are posting live updates on our social channels:

ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on a performance catamaran named "Archer" and sharing our adventures in family-friendly episodes every Tuesday!
OUR ROUTE: We departed the Boston area of the United States and sailed south to the Caribbean and then west through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Australia.
OUR PAST: You may remember us as "SV Honeymoon?" Ten years ago ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named Honeymoon halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via KZfaq and, by happenstance, created one of the very first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids.
FAQ: More questions? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website or answers to many of your questions in this 40 minute episode:
www.the-sailing-family.com/faq
• Everything you've ever...
PLEASE COMMENT!: As a channel with kids on-board, we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think!
THANKS for watching all. Subscribe and never miss an episode!

In case we didn't make it clear in the video, we are VERY GRATEFUL to have been allowed into Australia. While some of the Government decisions about Hotel Quarantine didn't make sense to us, it was a price we were happy to pay to get into the country. We went in with our eyes wide open, and we are genuinely appreciative to have been given the opportunity to enter. Thank you Australia. ~Seth & crew

I understand how you feel frustrated, but you have to understand that the chain of evidence to the government doesn't start until you show up at their doorstep. Even though you've been at sea for 14 days doesn't mean you haven't met anyone along the way, to the government they only trust what they control, and to enter, it's the price you have to pay to get in. Yes, you are grateful and I don't deny that, and yes, common sense is that you are free from covid, but you have to live with the price of entry. Take a look at the United States, land border ports of entry are closed until September 21 for non-essential travel. I'm a Canadian, we've allowed fully vaccinated US citizens to come visit Canada, the US, however has not reciprocated the gesture, does that make sense?

@@kojiho604 Then why do so many other countries count time at sea? If we are a risk, why allow someone else to move our "contaminated" boat the next day? Why expose my family to a hotel system that has proven time and again it can spread the disease? No, it still makes zero sense.

Great video and thank you for your very open, patient approach to each country as they battle with Covid in their own way. I’m an Aussie with family where you entered and all around although I am living in Canada - I’m seeing it from 2 perspectives. It’s hard to say which Country has the balance correct in the way they approached lock downs, quarantine, etc. Either way, great to see the kids and yourselves enjoy the Aussie friendship and country. If Kookaburra’s were any cooler of a creature they’d need “sunnies…”

Australia is in fact an incredibly bureaucratic country with convoluted rules and regulations that don't make much sense at the best of times. The only way of dealing with it and keeping your sanity is, at it seems, YOUR way: keep calm and deal with it all in good cheer. You can't fight it so you may as well just go with the flow...

Good that you stayed calm ond collected when dealing with your arrival formalities - unlike some. Strange they needed so many as when entering via airports in normal times you go face to face with one maybe 2 officials. I guess they were all on overtime *and* they got a ride on a police boat. I note with interest that the taxi driver was unmasked - that is how the present outbreak in Victoria and NSW arrived in the country - an unmasked limo driver transfering infected aircrew.

Going on 4 weeks dealing with my COVID infection and now the wife and 5 year old, these videos put us (in our minds at least)back in salty air with a sheet in my hands. FYI, the doors between hotel rooms can be locked, albeit thin walled, if you ever wanted to play parental scrabble....or take action on the expressed frustration there within ;) Many strong opinions are out there regarding COVID. I would suggest to have the tendency to temper views of the approaches taken for mitigation until we put the virus well astern of us. More especially if unaffected or mildly affected. Survivor bias is almost as powerful, if not more powerful, as confirmation bias, and applies to both the mildly afflicted and the gravely afflicted.

It's a weird world right now, common sense isn't so common, it's a fluid situation, scientists/doctors are doing their best to keep up with the changing environment. The politicians won't make everyone happy, and some are doing irreparable damage to their communities. Your videos are a nice escape, great storytelling and enjoy seeing the places you are sailing to. My wife and I don't have kids, but can appreciate the way you parent, all of the attention and activities you do in your videos, that's the kind of upbringing we had as well, my parents were great. You are a great example of good parenting. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to have to leave your boat within a couple of hours and be carried off to a hotel and city/country you are unfamiliar with. It's probably easier for people to be Monday morning quarterbacks and suggest all of the things you should have done, or the way you should be... but none of us were there, so we really shouldn't judge you. I look forward to the upcoming adventures and new locations, especially the Whitsundays islands, or wherever else you go around Australia. We can't hardly wait until it's safe again, so we can continue our own travels and adventures, but until then, we are left living vicariously through you and the other sailing KZfaq channels. We are fortunate to live in Vancouver, BC with so many outdoor activities at our fingertips.

Other friends of mine went through this exact thing. The upshot is they did not have to pay for their accommodations. And the homeland security or whatever it is in aussie provided them with what ever they needed. It happened during the time they started using a more reliable test so miraculously they didn't need to stay locked up the whole time either. That and the head guy creating a bit of noise with some of the authorities helped their case a little bit. And it was one of the many instances that pushed aussie to adopt different policies.

Way too much. It's a nice yard, but we felt the vendor we chose took advantage of us and charged way more than verbally estimated. Always get an estimate in writing and hold them to it (+ or - 10%)!!! I feel like we've learned that lesson before... At least we agree with you, they did do a good job. The bottom probably wasn't this smooth when it left the factory! ~S

If you could change one thing about sailing to new ports, making it better or easier for all. What could be added or changed ?

In our opinion, New Zealand did this best. They had a legitimate "Q-Dock" that had no access to land and acts as a sort of waiting zone for the authorities to formally check you in. They were quick, helpful and kind. Sadly it's not always this easy and often involves bribes or imaginary fees (the D.R. was the worst). ~Seth

Armed Hotel POLICE??!!! Is it to safeguard the guests or to show... "Hey we are in charge here" (in a negative way) i am glad your familoy has been able to nurture the positive aspects that were there.
