Var Akobian is the best teacher you can get, he really helps you in your thinking process. In other words, "How to Think" in chess. I always learn A LOT and i watch the lectures over and over again from time to time. I love how he welcomes other people's ideas, but is clear on why he stands by his ideas, too. He is fair. I liked, "I would put an 'interesting' by this move. I still think my move is more direct and to the point, but Rfb1 is interesting and deserves attention." I liked when he said, "Slowly, I can convert this into a win. No question. Slowwly we will convert this into? A win." Confident and clear. That helps me think and stay the course when I'm playing!

Awesome video yet again from akobian. After a few years of following these and other games on youtube relevant to my opening repertoire I am now winning loads more games in my chess club. I realise now that the trick is to think middle game rather than loads of meaningless variations where you can come off the rails the first moment your opponent deviates from your learnt path.

How terrific teacher. The best I've ever seen. Chess look to be simple like capablanca, and so much of ideas behind simple and complex moves that you can get alot about how to play with pieces.

Great staff from you, as always. As somebody who learned chess in USSR, extra level of appreciation for your lessons.

Excellent lecture! Hats off to GM Akobian! In response to the minority attack, black can adopt the following plan: leave the bishop on c8, reposition the knight to f8 like in the video (Nb8-d7-f8), play g6 instead with the idea of playing the manoeuvre Nf8-e6-g7. Once the knight has landed there you'll be able to play Bf5! which preempts any kingside attacks and getting rid of the white squared bishop in the process. This will take the poison out of the minority attack since endgames will be much more drawish. Then again, white can adopt different strategies like going for central control with f3-e4 ideas. It'd have been nice seeing Akobian touch on these subjects as well! Anyway his insights are amazing and he's got superb teaching skills!

I recently had a game featuring the Ragozin and I actually misplayed the opening. Now I know what to do. Thanks for the video. At 6:00 can't black play h6 Bh4 g5 Bg3 and Ne4 with pressure? I hesitated to play the Bg5 line in my game due to this. Just want to have this clarified.

I love all Akobian's lectures. It's so eluminating to see how a GM justifies every single move. I put this game into my engine which tells that a5? was a blunder losing a single pawn (b5), but with Ra7 the game continuous. What "ruined" the game was the following Rb8?? - losing a second pawn on a5.

i wonder if at 45:43 if black plays b5 then i dont think white will play b4 then black plays a4 i know that c6 pawn is weaken but still black can possibly hold on it as a and b files are closed not giving white some space on a and b files

what about Bf3 at 28:13? If black plays b5 then Qc2 and black has not any good defence for e4 square..after any blacks move white will play e4 and if black does not take take pawn on e4 his knight will fall

Actually 9. e3 is the best move at move depth 18 according to Komodo. Then at move 10. it settles for Bf4 but the difference is very small. At 19 (38 ply) it is even better to play Bf4. Well I wouldn't have been sure but the B with the Q on a5 looks as though pressure can be brought onto Black's centre squares.

I like his lectures also, I often don't pick the moves. But I find these positional things almost harder than tactical things. It helps to know the opening. But if you don't then training like this would help. But the computer takes a long time to reject Bxc3, I suspect because it initially is "thinking that there is one less piece attacking e4. Then it finally opts for c6 as Akobian says. So its a lesson here for Black players also. The two Bs should be kept on.

And Bd3 was the best move (by only a fraction) but after c4 then Bc2 is all better than Be2 although Be2 seems logical as he can possibly go to f3.... But I think I would choose Be2 as potentially the R on e8 is exerting pressure. Hard these "obvious" points of the game....to decide. Interesting.

First off this is great video thanks. However a nitpick at 23ish minutes you talk about why bishop e2 is better than d3 because of c4 losing a tempo its not quite that simple because the bishop on c2 removes a variation for black that makes it impossible for them to kick your queen. After Bc2 what does black do? b5 is not good as you said because it hurts them kingside thier Nb6 line is now shut down because bishop takes f6 is now destroying their pawn structure as black can no longer play knight takes queen and favorably trade because after bishop takes queen rook takes bishop is still losing an entire piece to the bishop on c2. Re6? then white castles and black does what? the computer thinks Qe3 is ok but after a3? white is better black has no good way to get at the white king and most of his decent ideas leave his king far more exposed.
