The Queen’s Gambit Declined is the most popular way to fight the attempt by white to give up (gambit) his c4 pawn. It has been played by top masters since the 19th century, and it will never lose popularity due to its solidity, flexibility, and the amount of different options it gives to black. In this video I have covered the Ragozin Defense (also known as the Ragozin Variation), a very tricky attempt by black to disrupt white’s normal development and attacking plans.
The Ragozin is an opening very similar to the Nimzo-Indian Defense. They are both characterized by the development of the f8 bishop to b4, pinning the c3 knight and indirectly putting pressure on e4.
The Ragozin Defense is, therefore, a great way for Nimzo players to fight the anti-Nimzo variations which start after Nf3 (white avoids Nc3 to prevent the Nimzo).
The positions black gets from the Ragozin are very active. He has a lead in development and his only strategic problem is the c8 bishop, which has to be liberated with either c5 or e5.
A very good, active defense for black. Full of attacking opportunities. It’s a fighting attempt, and it doesn’t simply go for equality. A great addition to your repertoire if you already play the Nimzo!

I like the main moves presented on the right side , providing the most important variations.. Its concise and gives a whole bunch of structure compared to a book you read in a serial way. From here its much easier to explore further and make better use of a book or chesstables. Its an excellent starting point and I rehearse the moves watching your video when preparing for my opponents as white. Please use you name in full , as you really do deserve credit for your work. You are doing a good job for me as an 1800 player, you might not be Carlsen but you surely know how to explain the main ideas of each variation. Thanks to help and simplify things for us.

Good video. Your suggested repertoire Nimzo/Ragozin & Catalan lines is exactly what I’ve been trying to learn, & I’ve been experimenting (successfully) with the Catalan vs QGD, Tarrasch def, Slav & semi-Slav set ups, so very much appreciate this video & it’s clear explanations.

17:33 you don't have to take on c3 before the discover attack because if Nxd4 Qxb4 then Nc2+ win the queen. So keep your bishop pair

i havent been able to find Barmen (4...Nbd7) but i guess it often transposes into the springs, although there are other moves like 5.Bf4/e3/Qc2..

People just play a3 when the bishop is played to b4. What to do then? Is retreating the best to weaken their pawn structure or is it best to lose the bishop and take the knight?

Hey Stjepan, could you please give me some advice? I'm about 1650 rated and I feel that I'm good at attacking and finding tactics, but my defending is poor - I often find myself up an exchange or a piece and then fall apart not being able to defend a counterattack and then draw/lose - my anticipation of opponent's threats is very poor. Are there any decent books that can help with that or good exercises that you know? Keep up the good work, cheers!

Study endgames it really helps you how to coordinate pieces early in the game especially after winning material and not yet consolidated from counterplay your opponent gets for losing a piece...then also practice with engines set them at your level and after say 20 or so games you'll start noticing patterns that on how you lose pieces hence you'll be more aware of holes in your perspective and knowledge of defensive play hence better placed to fix them

bit late but why must h6 be played at 12:20 , is it only asking the question about whether white wants to get rid of his bishop pair and if not, then you take on c4? because then why not just play dxc4 immediately?

I looked into the analysis board, and I found out that If dxc4 immediately, white can play e4 having a strong center instead of playing e3, bec in the delayed dxc4 line, the d4 is still controlling e4 b4 playing dxc4, besides that playing dxc4 first jus transposes

@@enderrking2239 been ages but had a look again, basically playing 5... h6 Bh4 6. dxc4 then e4 by white isn't possible after black plays g5 Bg3 Nxe4 pawn, so whites forced to play 7. e3 and b5 would be nice for black. If 5. dxc5 e4 (still equalish) b5 isn't the best move now due to 7. a4 c6 8. e4 and white will have a slightly better position

When transposing from the Nimzo-Indian to the Ragozin, after black plays 3... d5, instead of 4. Nc3 or 4. g3, what happens when white plays 4. e3? Is it reasonable to try and transpose to a Ragozin or Nimzo position? Or do you just learn the QGD Vienna Variation Quiet Variation where white has conceded to play e3 before developing his dark-squared bishop?

I assume you mean 1. d4, nf6 2. c4, e6 3 nc3, d5 4 e3, Bb4 Which will transpose into the gligoric system of the nimzo

@@ydgames4291 maybe, but Be7 hasn’t been played yet. I guess with knight forced to c6 and no longer pinned, I suppose queen has done job on a4 and needs to come back to control more of center

Hey. I am sorry to hear that and have been thinking about that. I will be launching new designs soon and they will vary in price depending on several factors. The price for the original designs was a recommended price on teespring and I had no idea what I should put there. It even said it was cheaper than average. I won't change the prices now because it wouldn't be fair to the ones who bought the merch for the original price. But I will keep putting out new stuff in different price ranges.

Qb3 line. White has a slightly better position at the end, can easily resolve his development, but this guy still doesn't like it. Great explanation.

This guy simply shows the best Stockfish lines to achieve equality and compiles it in a video. This doesn't help. I have Stockfish too. Why not show the most common moves by actual humans, the most common mistakes by actual humans, and then how to punish those mistakes?
