My ex’s doctor during her pregnancy suggested our twins were conceived two weeks apart! He said (yes, this is a direct quote…) “well, it looks like you two’ve been busy… you’ve done in a couple weeks what some couples can’t do in years!” 🤣 Edit: I forgot to mention; the twins’ due dates were even two weeks apart- baby A (my son) was due on January 27, and baby B (my daughter) was due on February 8, but they were born on January 8 a few weeks early. Apparently it was their significant differences in size that made them think they were conceived at such a different time 🤷‍♂️

What I find remarkable about pregnant women craving things like coal and chalk - which, indeed, does seem to correspond with their appetite shifting to consume the vitamins and minerals they need, when there is deficiency - is not so much that evolution has brought this about. Because, I mean, it's logical for this to have developed to counter deficiencies during pregnancy. No, what confuses and astounds me is how does their body know that coal or chalk contains the minerals they need? Like, if they've presumably never eaten a lump of coal before, then their body would never have had sampled it to be aware of its composition. Like, if I had a vitamin D deficiency and then felt a craving for drinking milk then you could see this my body just compensating for the deficiency - which is a perfectly sensible survival instinct for us to have all evolved - but the true weird thing here is if I had such a craving... but for something I'd never ever consumed before. How would my body know what was in it, to know it was the right thing to consume? That, for me, is the mystery.
@alexc6390
@alexc6390 2 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing it has something to do with the person having passing knowledge of the composition of chalk or coal. Without prior knowledge, even passive, you wouldn’t know what coal is. Though if a person who had never known the composition of coal suddenly craved it, it would be.... quite interesting.
@msai257
@msai257 2 жыл бұрын
There is a certain amount of pre-programmed knowledge in people. Tiny babies like sweet things and dislike bitter, because there is instinctive knowledge that toxins tend to be bitter and carbs sweet, and that carbs are nutritious and toxins are Bad. This combined with the fact that even if a person has never eaten chalk, they've probably smelt it, so some awareness of composition has been acquired. So, the body knows that it needs calcium and that chalky smell = calcium by instinct, and the brain knows that chalk smells chalky by exposure -> you want to eat chalk.
@klaxoncow
@klaxoncow 2 жыл бұрын
@@msai257 Yeah, that all sounds plausible. But it still seems remarkable because such knowledge seems "high level" - more abstract. Like, with "sweet / bitter", the tongue has different receptors for these, and so one can imagine a basic instinct, along the lines of "if these sweet receptors trigger, that's good. If these bitter receptors trigger, that's bad". But, in this case, the pre-programmed knowledge would seem to need to be quite "high level" - with abstract concepts, like materials, composition, the notion of what coal or chalk is, and relating the visual of seeing a lump of coal to that abstract concept of coal. And none of this involves words. Babies aren't born knowing their mother tongue and have to learn it. So we're using the word "coal" here - but that word is different in other languages. If there was a pre-programmed "coal is good for carbon" in our brains, how does that eventually get associated with the actual object in real life. And, of course, we live in a modern world where miners dig coal and companies make packs of chalk for writing on blackboards. These things are easily available to us now, but that wouldn't have been the case back in "caveman days", when presumably such an instinct would have evolved. So, you know, you can understand my confusion about how on Earth this could ever be possible. It's definitely true and real, we know, but what's the mechanism? Though I do like your hypothesis about it being about smelling it. That by-passes the problems I've just mentioned. Our sense of smell is particulate. If you're smelling coal or chalk, then it's because actual tiny particles of these things have entered our noses. Thus, we now have something that's like the "sweet / bitter" receptors on the tongue. But this opens up another intriguing ideas. That all of us are, in fact, analysing the composition of things that we smell. But this is purely subconscious. Because, i don't know about you, but when I smell a flower, I'm not consciously thinking "hmm, 20% sodium. 3% potassium. Trace amounts of water" or anything like that. But this idea would suggest that, on a subconscious level, there might actually be a part of the brain that's really doing that. I do think, though, that the subconscious mind is way more powerful than most of us realise. I've got this thing where if I need to be up for, say, 6am then I'll wake up and turn to look at the clock and it reads 5:58. And, if I've also had it that when I don't need to wake up for a specific time, then I'll start naturally waking up at dawn. I'll wake up and look out the window, and see dawn breaking - and this happens at all times of the year, even though when dawn happens varies substantially at my latitude in the UK. So, I do believe that we humans possess an internal clock that's spookily accurate. But it's just that we're usually ignoring it (and forcing ourselves up by 7:30am, rather than just naturally rising with the dawn - but, as I say, when I'm not waking up by a specific time, then I naturally drift back into this "wake up at dawn" cycle automatically). There's more going on subconsciously than we give give credit for, I feel. But because it's not conscious - and perhaps not easily provable - we overlook it. For example, I like your sense of smell idea, but how would one actually scientifically prove that's true? It sounds good. But how could you demonstrate that it's real?

Nature is mysterious. There's a video of Elephants in Africa going to a specific cave and digging out dirt and rocks and eating them. It turns out this dirt is very rich in salt and minerals which they don't get in their normal herbivore diet. How they figured out what their body needed and how to get it is a mystery. The video is called "why elephants go deep underground." What's notable is that all the elephants they filmed going into the cave were females, some of them pregnant

This is a stupid strawman. "eating for two" doesn't mean eating twice as much, nobody thinks that a fetus or baby is the same biomass as a woman. That said if a woman is breastfeeding then she is still eating for two after she has given birth, so it is true after the baby is born. So the degree that people don't say "eating for two" after the birth, could be considered a fallacy, but then they might not know to what extent the mother is breastfeeding.

I imagine in practice, people use it for just a few of those, like maybe broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. But I don't know. She also says "no one eats cole anymore, do they?" So I'm wondering if she's talking about something more specific that isn't common anymore, or if it was just cabbage or whatever and people don't call it that anymore, so she thinks it's something else. Maybe where she grew up, "cole" was something more specific that isn't popular anymore.

Great clip! This clip reminds me of Dara ó briain's excellent comedy bit: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oc6WfZB5p5eWimQ.html Is this QI official channel? If so would you please make a short clip on alcohol and one on weed please! Both are drugs which health effects and dependency we greatly underestimate! Even though it's not herione they're both very potent. I've seen plenty hooked and it's not a pretty sight! Driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicated is another huge problem! I'm against the draconian punishments in effects today agaonst weed though. I'm more treatment oriented! Just letting people off with a fine doesn't do much good though!

I love how the head to replace a certain f word in English slang with a really unconvincing voice over to say a single word cigarette It's all about context clearly wasn't being used as a derogatory term just just because in America it's synonymous with one thing and yes over here as well to some extent doesn't mean that in the context of it was used but it was bad or his murdered don't put this clip up at all if you're that worried about it and for the record of in my thirties I'm openly gay so this isn't a reactionary thing in that sense it's just the outpouring due to a mixed surfeit of amazement and irony when it comes from this particular program that champions things like slang words with double meaning

It's more that they're trying to avoid KZfaq's automatic system which will punish the YT account for any slurs it detects (even if it isn't a slur in this context).
@northofnashira2575

Yes, but the reason the English call it that is because the full f word can mean a bundle of sticks that are used for kindling. And the reason that it's slang for a gay person is because when they executed people for being gay, they burned them alive and they didn't get tied to a stake like Joan of Arc, they were just thrown on the fire which was considered much more disrespectful. So that's why gay people are referred to as the full f word and then shortened to the 3 letter one. There's no avoiding that it is an ugly word that should be phased out. No one uses the word for the kindling reason anymore and it's only used to insult someone or slang for a cigarette in the U.K.

"Twins" means two individuals that are born from the same pregnancy. That twins can develop from the same egg ("identical twins") or from separate eggs ("fraternal twins" / "non-identical twins") is why we have the two terms. I would guess that, with newer medical technology, the separate eggs of fraternal twins don't even need to come from the same mother, let alone where the sperm came from.

Not having a go at QI here, it’s not the elves fault. I’m perplexed at this platform and it’s algorithms. Especially on a QI video, of which the whole purpose of the show is education, which makes the edit very funny. It’s ridiculous that global society has stopped understanding context, the use of language or how to pick up a dictionary and learn the definition and origin of words lol. It’s still a fantastic clip from a great episode featuring the QI legend, John Sessions.
