Someone else in the Comments will probably already have said this, but the key thing about the Indian sport Kabaddi is the rule that the player invading the opponents' half of the court must be holding his breath the whole time he's there. How do you ensure the attacking player's operating on just one breath? Play underwater? That'd work, but on land, snatching a quick, silent, extra puff of wind to extend the time he can attack would be cheating - and would be very easy to do - so the rule is that he must say or clearly chant the word 'kabaddi' constantly, and without a pause. It's the defending team's job to link hands and block him in their territory until he runs out of air. Because the word 'kabaddi' has no natural breaks and no convenient esses or aitches or n's (where you could possibly draw a tiny breath) the end 'i' flows perfectly into the beginning 'k', so it's not possible to breathe in whilst chanting. It's obvious to everyone if an attacker is cheating. Musicians such as brass, reed, woodwind, and didgeridoo players will know that circular breathing techniques don't get around this one-breath rule. It's very effective. So, the length of time you can maintain an audible, uninterrupted exhalation of 'kabaddikabaddikabaddi-' whilst running and jumping and dodging - is the key point of the sport. It's fast and often quite vicious, played by men and women alike and, despite the QI panellist's stout defence of the purity of its origins, it is remarkably similar to several other games, especially the schoolboys' playground favourite 'British Bulldog, One Two Three', which does away with the fairness and the rules and the chanting and just concentrates on extreme brutality. Best played on concrete, of course. ;-)

Kabaddi is awesome! A raider runs thru the enemy court, tagging out as many players as possible and returns to the home court without being tackled. ON ONE BREATH! All while saying "Kabaddi! Kabaddi! Kabaddi!" the whole time on one breath of air until they return to their home court. We played it in Scouts for years.

When we started the new school year at my school, PE classes were always split based on how good you were in the first class. Hockey was the autumn/winter outdoors sport, and I was on the team, so I was always in the "top" PE class. Unfortunately, I'm also 4ft11. So when we played Netball and I was in my usual position of "goal attack", think you can probably guess the flaw there.....

I loved Netball as a kid. Wasn’t great at any sport, but I loved the slower-paced nature of Netball. I also played a variation of hockey that only my high school played called thunder-hockey. We never had any competitions with it, but I was actually decent at it, despite it being incredibly fast paced, which is incredible given I was this slow, unfit ball of fat, yet surprisingly decent at a very fast-paced game

I like sports where fitness isnt necessarily key. The ability to use your mind to observe the fast pace and get an edge through tactic rather than sheer physical force makes things a LOT more interesting! I'm a guy, and at school because i was so useless at all the male sports we did at school i was put in the girls netball team because they didn't have enough players. Because there technically wasn't a rule against male players in the local school netball league. I guess it was just assumed teams would be all female since it's a 'girls sport'. Also i guess the fact i was a 6'2 14 year old boy helped my school try to make that decision. I was literally the only boy in the entire netball league of about 8 teams. The extra sad part was i wasn't even very good at netball either.

I know it is a bit sad but had to come down to the comments just to make sure someone had mentioned that each run has to be done in one breath, which is why they have to keep saying Kabaddi over and over to show they were not taking a breath. I remember it from back in the late 80's or early 90's, Can't remember which channel or program. There used to be a programme about an hour long in the early morning covering sports from all over the world, some were just the normal stuff but they also did a lot of ' alternative ' and I always like Kabaddi for some reason :) Always caught that before going to work.

In school we boys had to play netball for a bit in the lower years. Now I’m not sure about other countries but in the UK in the ‘90s netball was very much considered a girls’ sport. So we all thought we were really funny and taking the mick by shouting whatever pass it was we were doing. So we’d go “CHEST PASS!” “JAVELIN PASS.” And the teacher would get really annoyed. Sort of failed to mention the interesting thing about Khabatti is that you're not allowed to take in a new breath when in enemy territory. You take in a big gulp of air before you cross the dividing line, then have to make your entire attack on that breath. You can exhale during your attack but not inhale. The reason for saying "Khabatti" over and over is to prove you're not inhaling. The defenders are trying to hinder you enough that you get exhausted and have to breathe, thus ending your attempt.

The meta of kabaddi is that the attacker has to complete his attack in one breath. So they keep saying kabaddi to remove air from lungs and to reduce the time an attacker can spend in the defending zone. It's simple it's quick but as the attacker touches the zone and returns everything hits the fan all you see is a 4v1 JUDO MMA LOVECHILD. Note- you cannot block the attack, you can only tackle the attacker when he is returning. i.e after touching either a player or the end zone.

as a horrifically asthmatic but, at the least, TALL child, i'm quite grateful at all the nonsense added to netball. they stuck me as goal keep: no running so no asthma attacks and no need to catch nor throw anything because my only job was to get in the way! unfortunately, once everyone else had growth spurts i found myself out of a job & was retired from inter-school sport, though my peers still had to suffer my presence in PE until i was allowed to drop it. thankfully, being good at making up games that conveniently didn't require running meant i wasn't ENTIRELY avoided at lunchtimes. (there was that ONE time someone caught on to how i kept "referee-ing" this one game i'd dubbed "Squirrel" and they eventually realised i'd set them up in a game mathematically/physically unlikely to be won or end on purpose)

Was introduced to the game in South Africa. I tried to keep an open mind especially because most of the girl students at the school where I taught were crazy about the sport. But to this American guy, it really is a cross between basketball & ultimate frisbee and is much, much worse a game than either of those two. It just feels poorly designed, and I guess this clip helps explain why.

That's really not Kabaddi! For people's edification, here's what happens: Person sent out on offensive has to keep on repeating "kabaddi" while trying to make contact with as many people in defense as possible, AND then making contact back at the zero line. Whoever is "touched" by the Offensive person is out, and the point is to eliminate the defense

The reason the raider in kabaddi has to repeat the word is because they aren't supposed to inhale while out of their side of the pitch. Saying "kabaddi" lets everyone know you aren't breathing.

Channel 4 in the UK showed it on tv for a bit in the 80s. They'd found a hit with the NFL and were looking for something to show in the off-season. It didn't really take off here.

Channel 4 here in the UK when it started up in late 1982 had a mandate to be "different" Sadly nowadays they are just a dull mainstream channel. Anyway... back in the 80's they tried to showcase more obscure sports. The NFL was one "obscure" sport that became huge and attracted viewing figures that dwarfed the rest of C4's programs. Some of the other sports that C4 broadcast were Aussie Rules, Gaelic football, Gaelic Hurling, Sumo wrestling and of course Kabbadi. The Sumo wrestling, while not to the levels of the NFL viewing figures, was popular. So much so that an official tournement was held at the Albert Hall in London in Oct 1991. The first official tourney ever held outside Japan in its 1,500 year history. I managed to get tickets, it was freakin' awesome! When they showed Kabaddi on C4, it wasnt completely new to me as I'd known some Indian guys on my degree course at University and had a go. It is WAY harder to play than it looks......
