Man, uptempo jazz drumming is so fascinating to me. Even though I mostly play pop/rock/hiphop and some songwriter stuff, jazz in general, but especially uptempo jazz is my grail, when it comes to drumming. By now, I am able to keep high tempos with my lead hand, but comping with dynamic and precision is a huge challenge for me. Your exercises will help a lot.

With a little work, up-tempo‘s won’t seem so fast and will in fact, become easier to play. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this great lesson! Do you recommend to also change the phrasing by practicing the exercises in a slow tempo (more in a triplet phrasing)? And then change the phrasing when you get faster? Or is it better to play in straight 8´s even in slower tempos? Thank you so much!!
@drumqtips
@drumqtips 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Add a slower tempo the updates definitely become more of true triplet. Let it naturally morph into eighth notes as you speed up the tempo.

AHHHHhhhhhhh! Where is the slipper cam so we can see what's happening with the left foot? At these tempos, my left foot trying to keep a quarter note pulse going lets me down. Should I be trying to keep a quarter-note pulse going with my left foot with the hi-hats on 2 and 4?
@drumqtips
@drumqtips Жыл бұрын
I’ll bring bask the slipper cam at some point. It’s too fast to keep quarter notes going so just focus on 2&4.

Hey Quincy! I found your channel like a week ago and I've already watched most of the stuff. Here is my question. As a open-handed type of drummer (beginner), would you recommend some drummers to listen to who are also playing openhandedly? Cheers!
@drumqtips

I know of only a few open-handed drummers: Colin Stranahan, Lenny White, Donald Edwards and Connor Kent. Definitely would be good for you to check them out.

I wish I could play Parisian Thoroughfare like Max. My brain keeps hearing 2&4 as 1&3 after a couple smoking fast bars and I get de-railed.

Try to tap the downbeats of each measure instead 2&4 or 1&3. It may help. Thanks Patrick!
