Great video as always Connor! :) I would like to say some additional things as well as to why this demo is so mental: -The 4th knight coming down that corridor at the secret is random if he comes down or not. You have to get lucky with his early alert movement to take a swing at you, otherwise he won't come down that corridor and will lose you time. Only 20% of runs make it through there. -The 2 remaining knights in the starting area are also random and their movement is beyond annoying. In order to beat Peter's time you need to deal with both with a maximum of 4 SSG shots and also cover a good enough distance to keep pace. About half the attempts die here, so already you realistically get a shot at leaving the starting area 1 out of 10 runs. -Next section, you need to aggro the ogre in a way so he shoots grenades - easier said then done - to make it infight with the knight you don't kill, otherwise when you get to the Silver Key, you lose a lot of time because the knight will be blocking important nail shots to kill the tucked away ogre. Sometimes that knight won't show up at all, so it's safer to reset and save your mental strength. The ogre can miss a lot of those grenades. -The DK shot to alert him is super tight. Even if you make the shot, he can still misbehave and runs off to do something else(stare at the wall probably). So does the shambler sometimes. They can show up later at the second quad but it's a timeloss nonetheless. -The first vore is slow with throwing missiles half the time. If that happens, there is a good chance you will not only lose time but miss the jump to the beam. Sometimes the vore doesn't even wake up! Sometimes the ogres wake up too and mess with your setup for the boost! -Haven't mentioned yet but up to this point you need to collect both 100HP health packs with your back turned otherwise you won't have health for the voreboost. The second one is annoying because it's out of the way. -Dropping down to the Silver Key is when the pain really hits you hard. If you think the DK alert shot is tight, baiting the ogre out of the corner is insanity. First, you need to kill off two ogres quickly, and set up the tightest angle from the position you drop down to. A given mechanic of the nailgun is that the shooting cycle always starts with the right projectile, and the projectiles are off-center. Ideally, your angle should be set up by the time you kill the ogre left over from the start(oh yeah, this guy can be naughty too and sometimes won't show up), and aim a tiny bit to the left of the pixelshot. Pray to god you hit the shot and start killing the other ogre at the yellow armor. Pray to god AGAIN that you don't get a bad stun animation from the ogre(happens about a third of the time), and shoot a few more nails at the baited out ogre, which most of the time you don't even see dying because you need that pace and advance to the Silver Key. Phew, yeah, told you it's insanity, isn't it? -Finally, the last vore boost. The DKs can be a bit weird with their movement and if they don't die quick enough, they can blow up your baited vore missiles. If you make it successfully through them, you need to bait the first missile to the back wall, so the second missile won't blow up on the half-wall when you proceed to kill the last two knights. The boost itself is tight on timing as well, The average success rate I had with it is roughly 15%.

Peter's run is insane. The beauty is that he uses technics others don't, and it's all because of his lake of bhop stuff knowledge, unless I understood it wrong of course. Your analysis makes this 100% better!

I very enjoy watching your videos! I wish there was more or that you d upload more consistently. Is there a reason on why you don't upload so often? Like real life reasons or the lack of content on quake or something else?

Do runners use the same weapon switching macros as duel players? As in switching to axe before changing weapon to get instant weapon switch. It doesn't seem like they do but I don't know if there would be any reason to during speedruns
@quakespeedrunsexplained
@quakespeedrunsexplained Жыл бұрын
Weapon switches are instant in vanilla/joequake - there's no animation, so you only have to wait as long as the previous weapon's cooldown. Some players use macros to select (for example) the best available nailgun, or to fire a rocket/grenade and then immediately switch back to the previous weapon.

@@quakespeedrunsexplained Ah right. Thanks for the explanation. As I was writing this I remembered they switch back to axe to stop the potential backpack drop.. been a long time since I've played but your channel is getting me back into it all 😂

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pMeBh9dhsZrQn4U.html I did make this video a while back. But yes there are SO many cool things to cover on custom maps and episodes. In particular I want to cover runs on Scourge of Armagon sometime soon.

@@quakespeedrunsexplained I’m a few missions into Dimension of the Past right now and liking it a lot so far. Scourge of Armagon is great and will be looking forward to a video on it, but I didn’t like Dissolution of Eternity too much (especially the dragon fight and earthQuakes). Your videos are fantastic btw. Pce dood

Do they REALLY play it for weeks until they get it right, or is there a tool that lets you quickload within a recording and resume from whatever place... or record in slow motion... or manually edit the recordings in some way to micro-manage movements and manipulate the RNG state to get things to line up?... Plus maybe a Quake port that lets you see entities through walls, triggers, maybe pre-placed triggers/nodes for scripting a run? This all seems a lot easier than just speedrunning with this much care and dilligence.
@quakespeedrunsexplained
@quakespeedrunsexplained 11 ай бұрын
Those kinds of tools are available for practice, or for figuring out what is possible. But they're not used for recording the actual runs, and can be easily detected. Players really do dedicate weeks/months to certain demos. Muty streams most of his attempts, so you can watch him do it in real time :)

And such tools as you speak of, runs done using those are categorized as 'Tool-Assisted Speedruns' or 'TAS'. They are useful for demonstrating what's fully, technically possible in any given game map or level without actually modifying the core game's physics or gameplay mechanics, but yes are not permitted for 'normal', realtime speedruns. The value of 'TAS' runs is for proof-of-concept testing of new tactics ideas, or when a specific challenge is deemed 'not possible' or 'not humanly possible', serve to demonstrate if the challenge is even technically possible, again without resorting to modifying core game physics and gameplay mechanics.

Your videos are awesome content. If you improved your delivery (less flat/monotone) and spiced up the presentation they'd really take off. That's the only difference between your Quake vids and Karl Jobst's ancient shooter vids. Regardless you have a sub here that will watch whatever you put up, great stuff and a wonderful trip through history.

I know what you mean, but I actually like the slow methodical style and find it quite relaxing. I much prefer it to the over-excited screaming or simple repetition of the same phrases over and over that you find in most gaming videos. In essence here the star of the show is the content with the presenter merely a vehicle to deliver it well, rather than the other way round.
