Java and Kerbey are doing fantastic, learning their first words, and gradually learning some manners to boot. They scream three times a day, every day, but they've gotten a lot better about biting and playing nice. They still chew on absolutely everything, though. In this video, you'll see exactly how I have my birds set up and we'll go over all of their fancy toys, perches, etc! While I wouldn't call this a comprehensive parrot care guide, it should be helpful to anyone considering a small bird like a quaker, cockatiel, or conure.

Just a warning... one of my conures died in one of those tents. I know it seems like a great idea, but he chewed through the bottom and got his foot stuck in it. then when he tried to break free he ended up breaking his neck. Saddest day of my life

I bought 2 of those snuggly tents but returned them after seeing the horror stories. They're busy lil buggars and catching a stray string hazard can be missed or never seen in time so I decided not to risk it. On another note, I have small rope perches outside of my Quaker cage just beside the door and that gives them something to step out on when they want to come out without them having to fly out or climb the wall. I adopted my Quakers over a yr and half ago and it's taken me a ton of patience because he was 9 and she was 3 and neither had been handled since they were babies so they were biting me every chance they got! The male will still bite me when he takes a notion that I need scolding.😒 and she will bite me when I'm filling or replacing their food bowls. They're Very territorial, especially over them vittles, Maw.😥😁 I love them sooo much tho, I often wonder what I did before they came into my life. My girl Coco is loving putty in my hands when she's away from the house but he still won't sit on my bare hand without biting my skin. I use a rag or a pillowcase folded up because he seems to have a little nervous issue to where he has to bite onto something to feel secure, which is what he does to whatever cloth I'm using. We're making progress tho and one day I hope to film and post videos with them soon. Good luck with your new feather babies🐦💘 ⚜

I love how you care so much for your birdies! Unfortunately there are quite a few things in this cage that are unsafe. As others have said, the happy hut is dangerous. I personally have had a bird die in one before. They can chew them apart and get there legs caught and can also swallow some of the strings that can cause crop compactions and death. A wooden nesting box is much safer but can incorage aggression. Unfortunately the rope perches are also unsafe for the same reasons as the happy hut. Any fabric toys are unsafe for birds. The filing perch is also unsafe as it can cause stomach upsets if ingested and can irritate their feet causing bumble foot. A good alternative is natural bird safe branches. They will do just as good a job and are completely safe. That's for reading! Good luck with your beautiful birdies

I commonly add one new thing at a time to my Quakers cages. They seem to respond better that way and can explore the new object on their terms. I feel it helps with stress. Love the set up looks great.

I'm a 17-year Flock Leader of Quakers. Try giving them sticks to build with...screwer sticks and cut the sharp pointed edge off, and coffee stirring sticks. and then 100% cotton rope....and they will go nuts building. The females are not as good at it as the male quaker, but she is determined and WILL finally make her own nest.

Such a joy and blessing to see your concern and care for these birds. Paulie Soprano is my 13 year old Quaker. This is his 3rd and permanent home. I love him dearly. He's chatty, does great impressions of various sounds... zippers, baseballs making contact with bats, sirens, sneezes, coughing, chickens ( which confuses my 2 pet hens) He is a wonderful alarm system ! I always know when the mail has been delivered. He gives kissing noises as he marches up my arm to perch on my shoulder expecting a kiss and armpit scratch. And when he sees spaghetti, those little birdie legs … he comes running. He also sings the theme songs from Green Acres and Duck Dynasty. Love to all the birdies...…...

I have two conures so it's nice to see you enjoying your Quakers. However, I'd like to warn you that the tents aren't good for parrots. They can cause the birds to become very territorial and hormonal and they will chew on it. There are lots of stories of people who's birds have died from getting tangled in the chewed cloth. I just wanted to let you know before it's too late
@AfroHerpkeeper

It was another commenter who encouraged me to buy the tent in the first place - I’ll continue to keep an eye on things. They’re sleeping in it now but haven’t started chewing on it. I reckon the moment they do I’ll take it out, unless there’s a way to modify it and make it safer.

Thanks for the great vid. I just found a quaker parrot today, abandoned in the parking lot where I work. I will make an attempt to see if he was honestly lost but I doubt it. I work in the environmental department at my electric power plant and have seen way too many pets young and old get abandoned in the parking lot. Your video is teaching me a lot on how to make sure the little gut is entertained. It was love at first sight for me and I already had a huge cage on account of my rescued pet pigeon (who much prefers sleeping on top of doors)

My Quaker parrot loved sticks from the yard the most . He would build a giant nest at the top of the inside of his cage then would test every stick to see if it was wedged right then rip it apart and start all over again amazing nests lots of hard work there great builders try it out .

Hey. Just so you know those binder clips could be harmful to your birds. If they contain any zinc, which they likely do, your birds are at risk of zink poisoning from ingesting small amounts over time. Watch for mating behaviors in the little snuggly hammock too. If you see that it'll probably need to be removed. Seems like you're really giving these guys a proper home. Keep it up!

My Quaker has a plush tent that exact color! He absolutely loves it! The only negative thing is he is so territorial and protective of it that he gets too rowdy when he's in it. He also started pulling at it and eventually pulled the inside lining out! I had a big perch directly under it so he could rest on it if he happened to tear the bottom out of the tent... Which he has done. I'm not sure if it's good for him to be so protective of it.. But I love him and can't help but get him another one because he loves it so much!
@Bullen_3
@Bullen_3 4 жыл бұрын
DO NOT get him another. They are have been many casualties with these 'tents'. You said he is chewing: One of 2 things can happen or both:either birds chews and swallows some of the material and damages their crop or they can get their feet stuck in it the material and get caught hanging and die. AND to top it all off these stupid tents are not even necessary,at all. You say you love your bird,then i'm sure you don't want that to happen.

Love quaker parrots..can't wait to hear them talk. I have a baby parrotlet. His name is Polu. He has an obsession with one of his toys. I often sprinkle chia seeds on it, and he forages them. Then he will hang out, or play with that toy for much of the day. At night he cuddles up next to it. It's the strangest, cutest, funniest thing. I kinda feel a bit jealous of this toy at times, lol.

@sandaysunday7997
@sandaysunday7997 5 жыл бұрын
@@teresatanasi5143 I would say make sure you get a hand fed bird from a breeder with a good reputation, and maybe watch Flock Talk's channel. She offers a lot of good insights into all the various aspects of parrotlets as well as some great training tutorials. They can be bossy, but by respecting them, and handling them with lots of love, toys, and training, I think they make a very enjoyable pet. I think they love training sessions bc they love being active. Hence, why they love good foraging toys. And you can even make your own. Imo they do require dedicated attention. Maybe not as much as a cockatoo but consistency is key. If you handle them every night before bed, for example, they will expect it, and get hurt if you ignore them. Of course, they will let you know it, bc they get into cute little fits when they want things. Basically what you put into them equals what you'll get out of them. If they are unattended much of the day, day after day, then they may become a fussy, territorial, unhappy bird. Parrotlets, are totally worth the efforts though. They are not loud birds. Are very playful, and are full of character and charm. Hope this helps some. If you keep getting perspectives from various people it should help you decide if a parrotlets is the bird for you. 😊

No idea if you still have these two but they should be on a fresh chop diet too! The pellets are great but the chop should be accompanying it ^~^ also dowel perches are not recommended much at all. You do have a big variety of perches but they should be placed somewhere the birds aren’t sitting on it all the time. Should definitely get better foraging toys as well. Heat lamps also aren’t really needed for birds lmao. Unless you live in a really cold area or you don’t have heat in your house it’s not necessary.

I love that you keep then flighted. How they should be kept. They're so pretty. Constructive Criticism: Watch out for their feet, cause those pedi/nail filing perches can rub off the protective skin off their soles. And since dry seeds are so fatty try sprouted seeds, much more nutritious.

I just purchased 2 Quaker Parrots approximately almost 2 yrs old supposedly 1 male, 1 female. I believe previous owner did not spend much time with them and possible never been out of their cage as not very friendly, scared, and they bite. I was wondering a few things. For sure gender, if should separate them and if could still train them and best way to do that and if they would learn to be able to talk? I had a Quaker but died on Christmas Eve and he was very friendly, did not bite and was just learning to talk. He was still a young bird and miss him very much so I bought these two from previous owner as did not have time for them. Can you help me on these issues.

At my local bird store there are 2 gray quakers that have this dreadful squeak that they scream out when anyone goes within 5 feet of their cage.

I have two Quaker parrots their feathers are turning black what can I do??

That may be something called "stress bars." Might be attributable to their diet, a lack of UV light, or something giving them stress. Do some research on it! If you can't determine the cause a good vet would probably be able to help.

Can someone recommended a safe bird bed for my Quaker? I tried the sea grass one and he hated it. I bought him a fuzzy one and he loves it but chews on it. What else do you use and where can I buy it. Thank you for your help!

I did just notice that the link for the flat perches comes with one round wooden perch, and one flat perch. The one that I ordered had two of the flat perches, although I guess it doesn't hurt to have a variety of natural perches. I bought a pack of two so I can just replace the current one when it gets old and gross. Just FYI!

Good for you. Most people have cages bigger than that for their birds. My cockatiel’s cage is probably a good size for an African grey. My blue crowned conure has a size good for a macaw. It just depends

I really wish I could have some pet birds, but I love perfume and incense way too much. When I'm older I'll have a giant greenhouse they can live in c:

I dropped the front door on my quakers neck. It didn't react and seem fine. Could it cause injury.

When you say front door do you mean like a wire door on their cage? I would imagine if it’s acting uninjured it’s alright
