Quarantine Assignment :: Document Your Life :: Due April 20, 2020

Let’s all make a 5 minute or less documentary of our personal lives in quarantine. I was inspired by photographer, Owain Shaw, and a video he sent to me on Twitter. In this video I have a few constraints for us to work in and I give a one minute example of what I’m thinking as a way to approach this. You can do video or stills. Email your final video to me at usedfilm@gmail.com. This is due by April 20th, 2020. Can’t wait to see what you all make!

Damn, man thank you for the shout out! This virus shutdown has really mentally kicked my ass and making my video was therapy. Thank you Zack, you have no clue what this means for me mentally and spiritually. YOU ROCK MAN!

Hi Zack, and everyone. Thanks so much for the shoutout, it's wonderful to see the videos I made being used to inspire others to create something, and the work you're doing to teach and lead through these strange times is amazing. If I can I just want to encourage anyone reading this who is new to video, or not very confident with it, to give this assignment a go. Video can seem really daunting with lots of new technical terms and techniques to learn and worry about - especially if you spend time on the Photography/Videography parts of KZfaq ... I couldn't tell you what 10bit 4:2:2 means. Zack's videos showing his process of recording with the iPhone and a cheap light are great for showing that a lot of what's out there about video is just noise. These videos I made about quarantine were basically the first videos I have made - I used one camera on a tripod, and edited in an Open Source programme called OpenShot. (The one other video I had made before was edited in Windows Movie Maker and it actually looked alright as well ... even more basic in terms of editing but alright.) The editing could be better, for sure, but I'm really glad I made the videos as my document of this period of history we're all living through. Basically, if I can do it, you can do it! I might take up the assignment just to see if I'm capable of putting together something under five minutes long!

Great idea ! I enjoyed your talk on PhotoBizX, I feel the same way you do very often even after 25 yrs shooting (former Atlanta girl here :)

OK Zac, made me 1st video and just loaded via VSDC. Mostly slide show of stormy weather in So Cal mountains, including snow. Captured some OK shots, over several days. Real issue was putting this together. It crashed one of my computers. I ain't a techie, did learn how to make a video and how to cut and edit and added music (royalty free). Made a zany intro, perhaps its chessie. Spent many hours and 2 different editing programs getting this done. The photos have black border and was not able to get around this and I am tired. On KZfaq I use my name Michael J Daily real original for everyday guy) The upload went through VSDC, its not on the channel yet I am also staying inside now and have been shoring still life with available window light. Will likely made another video out of that. Thanks for the idea, it was certainly a learning curve and something that benefits me. do well, be happy , safe & healthy mjd

Hey Zack, are others posting anything from this assignment? Be interesting to and may help the creative juices flow. I just did me 2nd video, thanks to you and this. It was more in line of documenting what were are doing and another assignment-natural light and table top its on youtube: michael j daily, I did acknowledge and your idea. What else can you recommend for us be at home types?

I am not actually in quarantine. Recent travellers are. I have seen from TV that USA and UK are in a big mess. Australia might be doing a bit too well, by far most of our afflicted caught the virus in other countries, in some cases people have caught it from returned travellers.

Well, still trying to figure out the compression as I keep screwing this up. Everyone seems to have a different solution in exporting.. but enjoy your videos.

I B shooting stills, I ain't a channel, yeah thats right I am channelless, someone has to be and I guess its me. Next I have Nikon D7000 been I m an old guy (turned 68 on the 3rd), have not really used the video much. With that said, this is a challenge and learning process, I understand the video from this is not great, I will put something together and its a great idea. Also, have Nikon D600 auto focus broke and analog film cameras. So I am game and will give it me best. www.mikevibes.com

sadly beyond a small dose of existential dread and irrational paranoia on top of the usual employer induced anxiety and depression my life hasn't really changed. Maybe I should think what would Natalia Drepina video.
