Adrian and I are headed out for another scooter road trip to the Ozarks! We're riding up to meet with Neil in Arkansas, and then we'll continue to Pevely, Missouri to motocamp and to watch the World of Outlaws sprint car races this weekend. Skip around with the chapter markers below.
We had a late start today because Adrian's PCX decided to shred its CVT belt on the highway coming to my house. I towed him about 6 miles to my house so we could effect repairs, and I used my 2021 Honda Trail 125 as the tow truck! ( • CT125: Can the Honda T... )
We replaced the CVT belt and the rear CVT drive assembly with the OEM parts, and we hoped that would resolve the original problem. Unfortunately, disaster struck again only about 45 miles from home when his PCX shredded another belt in heavy traffic on US-59. We towed it about 2 miles off of the highway, and then called my son to bring the OEM variator pieces to us. After another ~3 hours of downtime, we finally hit the road again toward Arkansas with all new Honda CVT parts in the scoot!

Love watching these trips from over here in the UK. Always been a fan of small bike touring. What a superb trip this was. Looking forward to the later episodes. Makes me think I ought to crate up my super Cub and get it flown out to the US for a big trip.

With my scooters I find boring OEM parts have less noises and surprises, aftermarket CVTs and variators performance increases seem minimal at best

Hey there Quasi, check that CVT issue was a real pain for you guys -glad you figured out the culprit. As much as it's a true negative impact on your trip, it's pretty valuable learning experience for those of us who haven't delt with those types of issses...yet. Thanks for the feedback, Casey, and good luck with your upcoming PCX150 purchase! I enjoy sharing these rides with people, so maybe they can take the leap and do it for themselves. I decided a long time ago that I wanted to take all of these crazy adventures while I'm young and able enough to do them. Time and age are the enemies of active sports and experiences like these, so there's no time like the present! I watched another channel ( Biker Bits, kzfaq.info ), whose slogan for a long time was "Adventure before dementia." That sums it up for me! I prefer to have a senile brain full of great memories as I get older so I can reminisce about the glory days. That's much better than being old and physically incapable of taking those adventures and regretting it when it's too late! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Howdy, Randy! Get out and ride that Grom! Road trips and touring on small bikes is great fun. You're forced to slow down and enjoy the scenery instead of rushing through it to reach the destination. If you haven't done any long trips before, then you can just start out with shorter day rides and then work up from there. You'll figure out your machine's limits in terms of comfortable speeds and distances (both for you and the bike), and what riding equipment you need to do it effectively. After you know your gear and limits, then start pushing the boundaries by 100 miles or so until you're far enough from home that it's inconvenient to give up or quit. Traveling just a little outside of your normal "Oh, I can just quit and go home" range makes you rethink some of the equipment that you take, and it recalibrates your expectations for how the trip should unfold. Then everything just snaps into place... range, equipment, fuel logistics, etc. After you cross that threshold, you can simply multiply the resource and time requirements for any distance or length of trip that you can imagine. I have been interested in a cross country scooter adventure. I have a Honda CTX 1300 that I love. But at nearly 800lbs its a workout to maneuver around the pothole laden city where I live. (New Orleans). I had picked up a Chinese Zuma Clone a while back as a way to get into scooting. You know what. I just love these things. After I ran into your vlogs one day I started wanting a PCX... And when I ran into a 2022 PCX 160 ABS listed for a "Naw that cant be right" price, I had to grab it. Zero regrets. Had it up to 66 so far with more to go but it was rush hour so traffic was thick. One of the great things about where I live. All the roads are 40mph or less. You have to get on I-10 and ride for 30 miles to find anything above 50mph. So this is perfect. Thank you for all the great videos.

Awesome that you found the camera. I am not a fan of the fish bowl spinning that some do w/360°. That is the White River. It goes all the way to the Mississippi River at Trusten Holden WMA in south Arkansas.

Leaving things stock is the answer. Factory clutch’s are tried and true to RPM for safe guard of engine longevity. Is three or four MPH really worth it. I’ve owned many Honda and Yamaha scooters since 1983 and getting 10,000 plus miles before changing belts only as a precaution. 👍 I also own a C5 2004 Vette with no mods and zero issues as others have had with having car on jacks somewhere. Who’s needs all the tinkering associated with mods for the most part. 🤔 I guess with time you hopefully With age you will Live and Learn.😬

I've rewatched this video after the 2023 Cannonball videos Quasi released. I'm now very wary of installing anything aftermarket in the mechanics of the a bike/scooter. Love this video though, it must be great to ride in such a big country.

True, but windscreen selections for scooters are limited. It's difficult (and expensive) to try several different screens to figure out what works and what doesn't. This is my third screen on this scoot already. It's always a toss-up because these aren't adjustable screens like larger motorcycles often have available to them. 😉👍 --QM

I had this happen on a SYM shark 125 , the rear pulley was sticking on the shaft and not moving out on the shaft when you revved up , the belt would just slip when revved as the front pulley moved but not the rear. The problem was worse in the wet as it would gum up with the dust a and as the belt slipped the rubber would get onto the shaft causing it to jam even more, you could ride at a slow speed low revs to get back home , I ended up buying a new belt and drive sleeve.

I had a similar issues on my pcx, a noise in the transmission, plus some belt slipping on take off. I had some work done on the transmission, and it seemed fine for awhile, then it began to have the same issues all over again.

Back in 2014 I traveled around the USAon 2011 Honda pcx 125 for 5 months and 20000 miles 37 states 38 NP Really overloaded about 500lbs 2 new rear and 1 front tires Changed belt at Battlescooter shop in San Jose Cali Stock belt is the only way go I went to diamonds state park in Arkansas and not the mountains I’m regretting it

Wow! What beautiful country. Those PCX150's move right along! I just purchased a 2023 ADV150. I would like to know more about what camera you are using and the overlay data info on the video. How did things turn out getting your 360 camera repaired. I just purchased the Insta360 X3 a couple of weeks ago. Now I'll be checking on it every 5 minutes. Great video!

Thanks for watching and leaving feedback! The telemetry data for the HUD is recorded by my GoPro camera and my Garmin Zumo GPS (when I'm riding with it). I use a third-party program called Telemetry Extractor ( goprotelemetryextractor.com/ ) to combine the GPS data to generate the gauge overlays. Telemetry Extractor also works with the Insta cameras... just be sure to enable your GPS function in the camera. Everything is stitched together in Adobe Premiere Pro to create the final videos. I still haven't received my GoPro MAX back from the repair claim. They lost the order AND my camera, apparently, so I've been going round and round with their tech support over the phone. They keep opening new cases and sending call tags for me to send in the camera before they process the return. AAAaarrrgh... they already received my camera, and I have tracking to prove it! 😒 Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Congrats on your new-to-you PCX150! You'll have good top speed with that 2013 model because of it's "longer" final drive ratio. As I recall, they can cruise at 65 MPH easier than the later models, and their top speed is around 74 MPH. One potential downside is less range due to its smaller 1.5-gallon fuel tank as compared to the 2.1-gallon tanks in the 2015+ PCX's. You'll just need to carry a bit of extra fuel with you to compensate for that. I'll look forward to seeing you at the 2023 SCBR! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Howdy! I would recommend staying with a machine from the Japanese manufacturers if possible (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha) instead of any of the cheap Chinese brands. The Japanese bikes always have better reliability and build quality than other brands. I've heard from some of your countrymen that Kymco and Sym are also available down under. Those are also excellent machines with reliable maintenance histories. Kymco and Sym aren't popular here in the USA, so the parts and service networks are spotty at best. However, both of those manufacturers have been producing scooters and motorcycles for several decades... they make quality machines! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Only real way to prevent this problem is to get a larger displacement scooter wherein you don't need aftermarket CVT parts to squeeze out another 5mph and sacrificing reliability. Love the PCX but it's not a long highway capable bike.

I dunno, man... that's just a matter of perspective. Comfort levels are relative for everyone in terms of speed and butt endurance. I've already burned 6K+ miles of touring on rural highways with this PCX150. We're planning to ride these scoots another 8K+ miles for the 2023 SCBR. Hell or high water, OEM variators or aftermarket... IT SHALL BE DONE! 😉👍 --QM

My cheap lip spoiler is also right in my vision but it has 2 small brackets on each side instead of 1 in the middle, I feel like that would bug me with it being dead center of my vision

Yep! It bugged me too much, so I yanked it near the end of Day 2 of this trip (notice that it's gone at 34:15). I ended up giving it to Neil on the morning of Day 3. It works much better on his OEM Yamaha screen because it sits down much lower. He seems pleased with it so far. 😉👍 --QM

The telemetry data for the HUD is recorded by my GoPro Hero11 camera and my Garmin Zumo GPS (when I'm riding with it). I stitch everything together with Adobe Premiere Pro to create the final videos. It's a lot of extra work to create the overlays, but I think the end results are worth the effort. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Hey Quasi, what do you do about all your cargo on your bike/scoot while you go into restaurants and the like? I always get so nervous leaving them on my bike when I stop, so I end up taking my stuff in with me. But if I did a long trip like this - there's no way I could carry in a bunch of bags with me! So do you just chance it? Or do you have a way to keep things secure?

We usually leave everything on the bikes when we're parked for short periods to eat or shop. I always take off the high value pieces like phone, GPS, and other quickly-removable (easily stolen) items. Most of those can be secured under the seats or locked in the top boxes for extra peace of mind. We generally strip all of the luggage from the bikes at night or when we'll be leaving them unattended for long periods of time. Most of the extra gear stays at camp (hidden in tents or hammocks) when we go out on our day rides... that keeps the bikes lighter and also simplifies the lock & hide logistics when we're out sightseeing. We use the SHAD H0PC11ST top mount that is made specifically for the PCX. It's made of heavy-duty steel and black powder-coated for durability. That mount secures into the OEM bolt holes in the rear grab rail (under the removable plastic piece behind the seat). Our SHAD SH39 top cases are secured to that steel mount with their own quick-detachable mounting plate (included with the top case). @@marcelobybike That is the DrySpec D38 dry bag: dryspec.com/products/d38-rigid-core-dry-bag . It comes with several heavy-duty nylon straps that secure it to almost any motorcycle. The straps wrap around your footpeg brackets, frame rails, or rear grab handles to secure the bag on all four corners. It's a very flexible mounting system, and it has worked on all of my motorcycles and scooters without any problems. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I put that spoiler on my Puig touring screen & now getting 8 MPG LESS. It does make it quite but I'm thinking about taking if OFF to get better MPG. Just thinking if you get the Taller VSTREAM do you think it will decrease your MPG. Did you notice less MPG when you had your spoiler on.

the new adventures of quasi - lol at the okie music on the first timelapse :D when you found the camera and it was still shooting - it looked ok from here - maybe you could polish the lenses and see if that might do something also the belt killing itself - maybe the variator wasnt on quite straight? even the belt off a little can stress it enough even tho it looks fine ps i saw the note pop up i was gonna go sleep (its 130 am here but meh not at work atm so meh :D also gonna watch athletics from earlier after this so meh - ps mmm waffle ho :D

What shocks do you have on the bike? Also, what are you using for a seat cushion? I need to put some aftermarket shocks on my ‘21 PCX.

These PCX's are fitted with YSS G-Sport shocks. The 2015 PCX (white) has the basic version, and the 2016 PCX (gray) has the fancier model with the adjustable damper settings. I ordered both sets from BikerzBits in Thailand: bikerzbits.com/ . Shipping is a bit slow and expensive from there, but you can also check Webike Thailand ( thai.webike.net/en ) or Webike Japan ( japan.webike.net/ ) as alternate sources. The seat cushion that I'm using is the AirHawk Cruiser Large: amzn.to/3KdfKwq . It really helps to add comfort on longer trips and also to avoid monkey butt from heat and perspiration. Thanks for the feedback! The Givi tall touring screen (D1130ST) on the gray 2016 PCX150 provides decent coverage, but I don't recommend it because it flexes too much at highway speeds. Adrian is a couple of inches taller than I am (around 5'9" or 175cm), and he experiences a lot of helmet turbulence and noise because the screen flexes downward under wind pressure. The screen that I have on my 2015 PCX150 is the National Cycle VStream Sport Touring (medium height): www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/national-cycle-vstream-sport-touring-windscreen-honda-pcx150-2014-2018?sku_id=1161414 . Sorry if this seems like an already-asked question, but what is the bigger bag that you're using as a "seat back" between the seat and the top case? I'm looking to get a '22 PCX and for longer trips I think a bag like that would be amazing.

Those are DrySpec D38 drybags: amzn.to/3CS4dPM . The DrySpec system is modular and can link up with other bags to add storage, like the D28 double-ended bag: amzn.to/3WkhaIK . If you don't mind me asking what liter top case do you have? I have a 2013 Honda pcx 150 and I am thinking about getting one from Amazon its a 48 liter which may be too big for my scooter but I need one to fit a full face helmet in. It says it will fit a pcx but I don't want it to look too dorky it's not a Giva case but it's pretty good according to the reviews. I already have the pcx mounting bracket.

The top case is the SHAD SH39 ( amzn.to/3jbWyV6 ), and it mounts to the PCX with the SHAD top mount (P/N: H0PC11ST, www.shadusa.com/products/pcx-125-10-21-top-mount?variant=32428342018090 ). I can fit my XL full-face helmets in there with plenty of room to spare. The SH39 comes with a universal mounting bracket that can attach to nearly any kind of mounting system. The SHAD top mount is inexpensive, very sturdy, and it blends into the PCX's aesthetics nicely. It's a super-stable and secure mounting solution. I've been thoroughly impressed with it over the past 7+ years. The case opens without a key when unlocked... just push in on the handle to pop the lid. That's a huge time saver over cases that require a lock or key to keep them closed while riding. You can also lock the top case to discourage tampering, and that also prevents it from being dismounted from the base. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Hey Quasi I got a question I’m wondering if you can help me with I have a 2014 Suzuki Burgman 200 there is something inside my scooter transmission rear wheel that is doing some rubbing in my back wheel would you have any idea how I can fix this it has 22,500 miles on it now ?

That’s thing Quasi it’s not making any noise it’s just doing the rubbing in the back wheel I ride it every day its the only vehicle I have but I do live in a mountain area in NM so I go up down hills every day it’s driving fine but it only recently started rubbing .

That is an altitude histogram that shows an overall view of the elevation throughout the trip. The scale varies according to the particular map or length of data that I used for that particular clip. It can be interesting to watch sometimes when I start a big ascent up a mountain or a steep hill. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

We haven't done a full post mortem on the NCY variator components yet. However, it was clear that the NCY variator was definitely the culprit... no more shredded belts after putting the OEM variator back in there. I did notice that the variator's front outer face (drive face) seemed to be defective or damaged during the second roadside repair. It was very diffucult to remove from the engine output shaft when we did the second roadside repair. The splines on the engine output shaft were burred and rough, so installing the OEM drive face was also difficult. Apparently, the NCY drive face wasn't tight enough (or laterally/radially correct), so it was wobbling on the shaft and causing the belt to flutter and/or twist during high-speed operation. That's what caused two belts to shred in under 50 miles. I haven't measured the NCY drive face with calipers and a runout dial gauge to confirm this suspicion, but it's almost a certainty. The NCY variator was noisy when I first installed it 2 years and 4000+ miles ago, but I incorrectly attributed the warbling noise to faulty rear pulley bearings. We noticed that the noise was even louder when we first installed the new CVT belt, so we pulled everything apart again and replaced the rear pulley/clutch assembly with the OEM unit. That seemed to quiet it down by about half, but it still had the warbling sound (louder than my 2015 PCX with the Dr.Pulley setup). After the second belt failure, we replaced the NCY variator with the Honda OEM pieces, and the variator noise almost completely disappeared (on par with my 2015 PCX). It survived the remainder of our 2000+ mile trip without incident, so that faulty NCY drive face was our villain. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Yep, I ditched that spoiler on Day 2 of this trip. I gave it to Neil to install on his Yamaha SMAX screen. It works much better on his scoot because the screen is lower and that bracket isn't in his eye line. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I try to select the slower highways and rural back roads for my trips on the smaller motorcycles and scooters. There is less traffic and the speeds are generally lower, which suits these smaller engines better. We will occasionally get stuck on faster highways for short stretches because there aren't any other paths. We just stay to the right lane and let faster traffic pass us, and then we'll divert to slower roads as soon as we can. It's more fun to ride slowly on these rural roads and soak up the scenery. Blasting down the interstates at 65+ MPH is boring and causes us to miss all of the great scenery that makes these trips so enjoyable. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

These are 2015 and 2016 Honda PCX150's with 153cc engines with 2-valve heads. The newer models since then have varied up/down a few cc's. The latest version from 2022+ has a 156cc engine with a 4-valve head, so it makes more power than its predecessors. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The top speed for my 2015 PCX150 is 72-74 mph (drag-limited) on flat ground. I've seen 78 mph downhill a few times. These speeds are only possible due to the upgraded Dr.Pulley performance variator and slider weights. The original top speed before the variator upgrade was 62-63 mph (rev-limited). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

That is the SHAD SH20 scooter tunnel bag, but it has been discontinued. I bought a couple of these during a close-out sale a few years ago. SHAD's SH25 is the replacement bag that's slightly larger: amzn.to/3CoRBjr . It's not usually stocked here in the USA, so you might need to try Ebay or other online resellers to find a good source. We are using the Cardo PACKTALK Bold communicators ( amzn.to/3RjYVBp ). I have an extra PackTalk that is joined into our group mesh so I can record the group audio. That unit is connected to a dedicated audio recorder ( Zoom F1 field recorder: amzn.to/3pIlRhz ) so I can integrate that audio track into the videos during post editing. I will probably upgrade to the new Cardo PACKTALK Edge ( amzn.to/3Acx3Is ) before our 2023 Scooter Cannonball Run trip. It has a better audio processor and slightly better range, so our group audio should sound better in the videos. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
