These are the videos that make me want to ride. Today was christmas for me, picked up my ADV 160. First impressions, I absolutely love riding this thing. Took at the back roads home had some fun on some twists and turns. I think the fastest I hit on the ride was 55 on the first trip. Thank you for the videos you put out, it gave me the bug to get on two wheels again. And honestly I really like the scooter over the motorcycle right now. But I saw a trail 125 at the dealership and was like ooooo that looks like it would be fun too.

I’ve done San Antonio to Roswell several times on a bike, about 525 miles, and even on a BMW I’ve usually been ready to get off the bike at Roswell given the winds and heat of West Texas and NM. I can’t imagine doing 700 miles under those conditions in a 150cc scooter. Tip of the hat to you Sir.

The head and crosscwinds are BRUTAL crossingbthe mid and southwest! I rode out Route 66 a couple years ago on a Honda Helix CN250 and got taken by surprise by the high, incessant winds. Didn’t help matters that it was carb’d and NOT jetted for altitude. Gasped for air in the Rockies though and needed a lot of maintenance to recover the power after we got home!

Thanks for the feedback and support, Alejandro! Editing and distilling these videos down from 30+ hours of raw footage (3 cameras of 10+ hours each) into digestible 30-minute chunks is definitely a time vampire. Occasionally, if I'm lucky, I'll find a rhythm that's a good compromise between fast-paced action and "boring" ride footage. The trick is keeping continuity between the huge time chunks of video that hit the cutting room floor! 🤣 Stay tuned for more Cannonball videos coming soon! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Estou revisando meus vídeos mais antigos para adicionar legendas ou traduções para outros idiomas. Minha esposa é brasileira, então falo português e espanhol (não bem, mas um pouco). I wanted to make this comment about the variatior. I saw a KZfaq video on changing the final transmission gears. The output shaft is 20% up and the idler gear is 5% up. So. you change them both it would be 25%. (All these numbers are approximate) You could change these gears and leave the variatior stock, as it seems so many problems came from the variator. However the job to replace the gears is much more involved than replacing the variator.

Great video! It is a shame that the mighty PCX didn’t turn out to be as bulletproof as we were hoping. It would be great to see a wrap-up of what failed and whether it was stock Honda parts, or aftermarket parts that caused you problems.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 11 ай бұрын
Agreed! It was a combination of both OEM and aftermarket parts that proved to be faulty. I'll give my diagnosis as the adventure unfolds on video. The OEM torque drive assembly (driven pulley, clutch, etc) has been suspect since the scooter was new, and that was a good portion of the problem. The Dr.Pulley performance variator did NOT withstand the abuse of Cannonball. I confirmed that at least two of them failed: one on my PCX150 and the other on John's PCX160. They both failed in identical fashion as the center bushing wallowed-out, which permitted the movable face to chatter/wobble on the drive boss. That chatter caused rapid failures of the movable face and shredded CVT belts due to belt slippage, twisting, and overheating. I'm planning to do a full post-mortem and remediation of the PCX in the near future. It's still sitting patiently for me to do the teardown video and then I'll order the replacement parts that I broke or burned out during the trip. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

What aftermarket parts r u using to get the higher top-end speed? Is this the same set-up u had b4 that kept braking belts? 😅 I’m in Beaumont tx & I sometimes ride my PCX 150 to Houston & Galveston.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 11 ай бұрын
This PCX150 has the Dr.Pulley perfomance variator and 13-gram sliders in it. That setup was reliable for nearly 10K miles, but the Cannonball finally killed the variator flying across the Mojave Desert on Day 1 of the Run: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iamSlrSez9Gyc3k.html . I limped along with it for 2 more days after that until I realized that the variator was causing the CVT belts to fail. I'll have more Scooter Cannonball videos coming soon! 😉👍 --QM

Great videos! What happened to the cub?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! The Super Cub still lives in my stable... it'll probably never need a new home. I still ride it occasionally for relaxed back road touring and the occasional road trip. I haven't been riding it too much lately because I need to open the engine and inspect the timing chain tensioner and idler wheel. These little 125's are known to whittle down the timing idler wheel after about 15K hard miles, which can cause premature engine failure. My Cub is still running fine, but the top end sounds a little bit noisy. Adrian's Cub (now my second one) is much rougher... it's down on power and doesn't sound healthy at all. So, I'll tear into that one first to see how badly worn it is. I might upgrade it with a mild big-bore kit (143cc with the PCX150 fuel injector) to see how that performs. After I know what to expect, then I'll dig into my Cub's engine to refresh it. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Hey man, how do maintain chin mount in place in hot weather? Mine keeps falling (adhesive fails) the 2nd time it gets exposed to sunlight and heat.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 11 ай бұрын
Great question! I've had very good luck with this particular mount ( SUREWO Aluminum Helmet Chin Mount: amzn.to/4780Bq9 ). It comes with a heavy-duty 3M VHB adhesive pad on the mount that hasn't failed me yet. I cleaned the helmet surface with alcohol before I mounted the adhesive pad so it securely bond with the surface. I used a C-clamp to maintain high pressure (10-15kg force) on the bracket for about 5 minutes to be sure that it was cured in place. So far, it hasn't failed in the past 12+ months... even after a 35 mph ( 56 km/h) chin bounce on gravel! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nsyliL2pvtCtZI0.html The only complaint that I have with this mount is that the anodizing isn't very robust. It started as a satin-black color, but the sun exposure has bleached it out to a bronze/gold color now after about a year of constant use. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

after watching some of your videos, and having your belts brake, (question) can the final drive be changed to a chain?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Ай бұрын
Not easily (or at all). The variable front and rear pulleys in the CVT transmission allow the v-belt to slide up/down to create infinite drive (gear) ratios. Replacing the belt with a chain would also require some kind of transmission to replace those pulleys to provide variable ratios. I've mused on that topic during several of my Scooter road trips. It would be interesting to replace the entire CVT with a 4- or 5-speed transmission and a centrifugal clutch, similar to how the Honda Super Cub operates. The direct-coupled transmission and chain drive would gain reliability and reduce driveline losses from the heat & friction in the v-belt design. The obvious downsides are added weight and complexity. 🤔 --QM

I still haven't decided which steed I'll be riding for the 2025 SCBR. If I don't buy a new scoot for the event, then I'll decide between the Super Cub (again), CT125, or the PCX150 (again). Is there a reason you didn't run your Sherpax?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 7 ай бұрын
Howdy, David! I wanted to haul the SherpaX again for this Cannonball, but the timing didn't work out. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to coordinate with Joel at KipMoto to build a new hoop/hitch for the PCX. I'm still hoping to work with KipMoto in the future to build another hoop (or two) for a couple of bikes in the stable. I'd like to have a mount for my Honda SilverWing 600 scooter and also for my Rebel 1100. All of those bikes have easy access to the rear shocks, so it should be easy to tie into those lower mounts for the trailer's draw bar. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

What PCX is that you riding, the 300?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 11 ай бұрын
No, this is a 2015 Honda PCX150. We just recently received the PCX160 in the USA, but that's Honda's largest scooter in our market right now. We're hoping for the ADV350 to be imported here, but it's not very likely. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

@@QuasiMotard We also only get the 125 and 150 in ZA. I have the 2013 150. Unfortnately it doesn't seem like we'll get the 300, but I'd wan't the ADV300 too.

Speed Tech Lights have a great selection of them. Have bought many lights from them in the past.

That is the SpeedTechLights (STL) Z-3 TIR amber: www.speedtechlights.com/LED-Grille-Surface-Mount-Lights/z-3-tir-led-surface-mount-warning-light-head . It mounts perfectly in the OEM reflector location. I drilled a 3/8" hole in the plastic fender for the wiring bundle and tapped the wires for the license plate light for power. I installed a waterproof push-button switch amzn.to/3qehVsX ) so I can turn it on/off as needed. Cheers! 😉👍

Why ethanol😊 free fuel?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 11 ай бұрын
Non-ethanol (E0) fuel is more energy-dense and it usually yields better fuel economy and range. Unfortunately, it costs more and it's not widely available here, so I'm back to refueling with E10 at the next stop. 😒 --QM

@@QuasiMotardinteresting. We have a Bucees here in my area in Florida so non ethanol is available here but I always thought it was only for large lawn mower equipment etc….

@@beachgirl9823 It's good for anything with a carburetor, a fuel injected engine doesn't really need ethanol free gas

Maxi bikes are not scooters! They are motorcycle wannabes. You may as well be on a real motorcycle… get a Vespa or a Supercub for a real experience!!!
@QuasiMotard

I agree with the Super Cub sentiment (I own one, and I completed the 2021 Scooter Cannonball on one). However, are you calling the PCX150 a "maxi scoot"? 🤔 --QM

@QuasiMotard 11 ай бұрын
Greetings from the USA! 400 km's on a 50cc is hard work because it's so slow! 👊👍 Our traffic speeds here in the States are so fast and frantic that it's difficult (and dangerous) to ride 50cc scooters on pubilc roadways. I have a 2008 Yamaha C3 (XF50) scooter and a 2022 Honda Navi 110... both of them struggle to keep up with our crazy cagers here in Texas. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
