Munich's first 8 Siemens Avenio T1.6 streetcars have been in service for almost 10 years. During this time, there were three software updates of the traction / Inverter technology, which is the reason the vehicles were on the road with different sounds. Listen carefully. :-) Various archive recordings from 2014-2021 show the differences acoustically from the outside as well as the inside. Have fun.
Background information about the Avenio in Munich:
Since the 14 Variobahns from Stadler Pankow did not prove themselves in Munich and several serial failures occurred, the company decided against cashing in options for additional Variobahns and ordered eight four-car Avenio streetcars from Siemens Mobility at the end of September 2012. Since the vehicles were urgently needed, MVG wanted them to be built and delivered in a sporty timeframe: in October 2013, the first completed Avenio was ceremoniously presented to the press. As is the case with MVG in Munich, where the supervisory authorities are known to be very fussy, the vehicles first had to "mature" for a long time in the depot before they were even allowed to go on daily journeys for the passengers. It was not until almost a year later, on September 17, 2014, that a trial run with passengers on Line 19 was allowed to begin. 2807 had the honor at that time, I accompanied this first day of operation with cell phone camera at that time and published it here. The Avenio vehicle type has proven itself very well in Munich. Especially the first series, which carries the type designation T1.6 at MVG, (in this video) is quite popular with staff and passengers. It offers a full and very comfortable ride with a pleasant suspension, even when cornering. The fact that it has established itself well is also noticeable by further procurements: since 2017, 9 two-seaters (TZ2.7), 9 three-seaters (TZ3.7) and 4 four-seaters (T4.7) have been delivered. The Avenio is becoming a cityscape-defining train for Munich, as the R2.2 cars have been up to now: in 2019, an option redemption of 73 (!) four-car trains was redeemed, of which just under 10-11 vehicles have already been delivered. Once again, these have not been allowed to go on line for almost a year, as the licensing authority TAB has not yet granted permission for passenger service.
In general, a few notes about the video:
- The car 2805 strangely had this sound (1st version) only on the last powered chassis for one or two weeks. A faulty update or something similar must have been the reason. They otherwise only sounded like this during their test runs. They then went into passenger service with version 2. If complaints from residents were the reason for making these changes is possible but not confirmed.
- The current version (3rd version) is otherwise only used by the Avenio Den Haag. These are technically very similar. While the new Munich Avenio series have newer technology or software and are therefore quieter.

Ich kann da der Beschreibung nur zustimmen, der Avenio ist wirklich ein tolles Fahrzeug! Sehr angenehmes Fahrgefühl und netter Sound. Da freut man sich doch immer sehr, wenn so ein Fahrzeug um die Ecke kommt - auch wenn es jetzt nicht unbedingt ein T2 sein muss. ^^

👍🏻Sehe ich genauso. Ich würde inzwischen behaupten, das es meine absoluten Lieblingsfahrzeuge bei der Tram in München sind. Die R3.3 mag ich nicht so. Auch wenn Sie komfortabler sind als die Varios.

Top Video! Vielen Dank für die tollen Vergleiche der Sounds von früher mit dem heutigen. Ich habe mich, wie du ja weißt in Variante 3 verliebt. Finde es einfach grandios wie er heute klingt. :)

Das wusste ich auch nicht. Die erste Sound Variante ist schon recht spacig. Aber sie gefällt mir auch 😂😂😂

Schönes Video! So hab ich mal einen Überblick, dass es verschiedene Sounds gibt/gab. Davon gefallen mir aber nur Vraiante 1 und 2.

Der erste Sound ist den Siemens Combino sehr ähnlich, wie sie heute auch noch in vielen Städten im Einsatz sind. Der zweite Sound hat eine niedrigere Frequenzumrichtung, klingt dann aber ebebfalls wie ein Combino. Die dritte Soundvariante ist schwer einzuordnen. Scheint also nur eine Variation bei den Beschleunigungsphasen zu geben.

Der Klang vom Combino ist noch da, aber ein blechernes Zusatzgeräusch was den Karren bissl laut macht

Mir fallen keine großen Unterschiede auf. Aber das, was ein User geschrieben hat, dass der Sound "spacig" klingt, ist wahr. Ziemlich laut, diese Straßenbahnen. Das leise und gemütliche "Rattata rattata" von unserer Bim in Graz, egal von welcher, hat der Avenio nicht.

ich verstehe nicht ganz warum man nicht einfach die Züge so lwise wie möglich macht, ist das so wie bei Staubsaugern wo die Hersteller extra die Geräte lauter machen damit man das Gefühl von "Energie" hat? 😅

Ich persönlich kann allen drei Varianten etwas abgewinnen, wobei mir die Avenios allgemein gesehen weniger gefallen. Vom Fahr(gast)komfort finde ich sie solide, optisch treffen sie aber gar nicht meinen Geschmack.

The first variant is also present on the Astra Imperio trams (the green ones, not the red ones!) for Arad.

Yes, i know! :-) I wrote that in the video subtitles as well! For the Munich operator this sound was too loud probably, so they changed it with an update.

​@@trams_trains Okay now I saw! I didn't read the subtitles at first 😅 Since we're on this topic. Later versions of the Imperio for Cluj and Oradea have the Den Haag version of the inverters. The Bucharest ones are completely different since they use local ICPE-SAERP traction.

@@trams_trains Yeah because Siemens' equipment was so much more expensive thanks to the semiconductor shortage and things like that. Instead the only delivered the 100kW motors identical with the latest batch of Avenios 😀 Astra chose ICPE-SAERP for the job because otherwise it would've resulted in the contract being canceled, something completely disastrous for Bucharest given the ancient fleet and the fact that the EU would've withdrawn their financing. As a side note, the Bucharest Imperios are only 50% motorized (Bo'-2'-2'-Bo') compared to all equivalent Avenios in Europe which are 75% motorized.

Thanks, interesting information. Didn't Astra once build one or two prototypes that didn't use Siemens engines or transmissions? I remember the Astra Authentic, which was purple and yellow and drove a few months in Timișoara. Then there was a completely purple one, with the same head like the green ones inArad. And what about the red three-segment prototype with the silver emblem „IMPERIO“ at the head….? Were these scrapped or do they still exist? Lots of questions hahah

Also der "spacige" Sound ist wirklich gewöhnungsbedürftig.. da würde selbst ich wohl schnell wieder aussteigen wollen 😅.
