i’m so glad that when tori is like “you’re not very good at keeping your promises” she immediately knows shes out of line and asks about him then when he leaves, takes a guilty sip and you can see in her eyes how guilty she actually feels. UGH LOVE TORI!!! i want more of her!!!

29:37 James actually was in Season 1, but not named. He's the kid in the final episode who asked Mr. Ajayi if he was gonna tell Nick (who had just abandoned the rugby match to have The Corridor Talk with Charlie) to finish the match.

It is kinda beautiful and sad at the same time that Nick adopts Imogen as his unofficial little sister this season (mirroring Tori's protectiveness over Charlie) seeing that David was never really a big brother to him.

"I'm bisexual, actually" is said so often this season (not really a spoiler), that you could turn it into a drinking game. Also, the places that sell Heartstopper items, print that statement on T-shirts, buttons, and other goodies.

RE: the fight over the apple juice in the store: Tao and Elle both grabbed the bottle in the spirit of play. You can see that on their faces as they start the tug of war. Because of where Tao had grabbed the bottle originally, he "won". BUT he wasn't in it to 'win'; he was in it to play and really wanted her to have it. Elle says, "You won fair and square." (I think she might not have wanted him to patronize her, so she resisted taking the bottle.) Tao, being awkward and not knowing how to verbalize what he really was doing with the game -- just shoves it at her so she can have it. She looks confused; he runs away in unease.

Definitely agree with you that Charlie can't promise all the safety that he names. Unfortunately, Charlie, being over a year younger than Nick (and definitely younger than Tori), tends to be excessively sanguine. One of his favorite adjectives is Perfect. We can see Tori's eyes welling up because she KNOWS that Charlie is putting too much on his own shoulders and that things are not likely to be 'perfect.'

Ok -- I saw this on a trivia post: If you remember back to when Imogen first said "I'm an ally" --- of this group, only the girls were present to witness that. The continuity people and the director remembered that and you'll see that the girls laugh about Darcy imitating Imogen and calling her an ally. BUT none of the guys had been there, so they look puzzled. [For me, what makes this extra funny is that the entire cast, including the guys (except for Kit Connor), had been doing short videos in which they imitated Imogen's original statement. ]

When Elle and Tao are in the garden, Tao said "Things are better when we are just friends." After Tao explains his fear of being left behind and how important their friendship is to him, Elle says, "I don't want to stop being friends," Elle's wording is very different. It leaves open the possibility that they can continue being friends while still having a romantic relationship.

One of my favorite jokes comes right after Nick orders the ice cream in fluent French: Sahar asks, "Um... Since when could you speak French like an actual French person? " Nick replies, "Oh, my dad's French." Darcy asks, "Since when? " Nick (looking puzzled) says, "Since... his birth?" ( all (except the confused Nick) giggle ) 😁

During the kissing montage, there is a scene (edited here), in which the guys are playing Mario Cart again. Of course, Nick loses. Charlie then ruffles Nick's red hair so much that part of it sort of stands up. Nick says ,"That was on-called for." Trivia: The hair ruffle was ad-libbed by Joe, and Kit' then ad-libbed his response.

Since Charlie is not doing the study hall and Nick is stuck in study hall all day -- Charlie went back to the coach and asked to rejoin the team -- just so he could be with Nick part of the day. Awww😍

When Elle plays with Tao's hair, as a flirtation, most reactors I've watched decide that the look on Tao's face shows he is "smitten." (And the animation sparks kinda back that up.) For some reason, though, I have read it as his looking "confused." 🤷

quick explanation abt the GSCE thing: it's a round of exams that you take for every subject you pick when you're 14 in the UK. You take them in year 11 so roughly 16 depending on the month you were born in. These exams can last hours long and take place in the sports hall usually so that the whole year group can take them all in rounds at once. There are multiple exams per subject like Maths, English Science or Language. After you do the exam, you get a grade from 1-9. Anything over a 4 is a pass, anything below means you really don't have much option after you leave school. Then college apps or a level stuff happen. The school give you organised revision and exam timetables

I watched a lot of interviews (on KZfaq), with Kit and Joe. When asked about what to expect for season 2, Kit said the director warned there would be"lots more kissing." Kit said, "Door opens, smooch!" (referring to the kissing montage at the beginning.)

39:14 I HAVE to bring this up because it's funny and I didn't catch it the first dozen times I watched this scene. The friend group is in a horizontal line. All the way to the left is Nick. All the way to the right are the 3 mischief makers (Tara, Sahar, and Darcy)/ Tao and Elle are basically in the middle. Nick calls out "What's the plan?" Tao and Elle bring up the historical art museum. The scheme begins: Darcy says museums are boring. Tara says that she wants to explore. Elle argues that Renoir painted there. Tao says that it's an important part of art history. Sahar says why don't you 2 go, then. ***** ***** Meanwhile, way in the back to the left, in the middle of this back and forth, Nick is smiling (almost laughing), realizing that Tao and Elle are being set up so they'll go on this type of date. When Tao and Elle leave to go to the museum, the friend group gathers into a circle and Nick 'accuses' them of knowing exactly what they were doing. 🤣

I saw 2 slang definitions of 'jacked'; "overly muscled" and "looking like you're on speedy drugs" In the context of Nick's having an anxiety/panic attack whilie taking the math exam, I chose the latter. (Nick has long been weak in math (see 1x1) and the weekend before the test, he told Charlie he knew he was going to fail the math exam. Charlie offered to help him review, but the fight with Nick's brother brought about Charlie leaving, so he did not have a chance to help with the math. AND just before the math exam, he tried to warn Imogen away from Ben, but was unsuccessful; Imogen had known Ben since primary school and she says if he did something bad in the past, he's acting better 'now.' (No one knows how Ben treated Charlie, except Nick and Charlie.) So Nick was in bad shape psychologically/mentally when the test started. ***** If you meant the other definition, there's a lot to explain about that. There are a couple of reasons why one might respond to how "buff" he looks in season 2 compared to season 1. There's the unfortunate pressure that led Kit Connor to the gym (in addition to overeating so he could look as big as the Nick in the books); he did the exercising wrong at first and had to go back and get educated in how to build the muscles properly (and I think he stopped overeating). But also between season 1 and season 2 Kit Connor had a growth spurt. He was the youngest cast member when he was hired (at 16). They started filming season 1 soon after he turned 17. At that time, he was 5'11" and was still pretty baby-faced. When they started filming season 2, he'd turned 18 and he was 6'1" and had filled out (even without the extra muscle) The baby face was gone (and it looks like the makeup people started toning down the freckles on his face (but not on his arms))

45:01 yep, that whole thing you're saying is right on the money! most people i've seen react to the show hadn't even pick up on the fact that the lack of control is what sets charlie back on this path that he's obviously been on for a while. and as you said, this often happend when charlie has no control over certain situations. nick asking for popcorn at the cinema, charlie refusing due to harry & ben being present. or you can even wind it back to charlie not eating his bowl of cereal back at s1 ep1 after he breaks up with ben. im guessing you haven't seen the rest of the season so i'll leave it at that, everything will come together in ep8

Yeah, I was impressed that she picked up on those hints in season 1! There were some more subtle ones, too, like there are a few scenes in season 1 where Charlie is just MIA at lunch. There's one in episode 4 where Tao complains about Charlie ditching him and Isaac to get lunch with Nick, but then two seconds later we see Nick with his rugby friends (not Charlie). There's another scene where Nick gets lunch with Tara and Darcy and we see Harry asking Tao where Charlie is, and Tao deflects. And then of course at the end of the season we know he hides out in the art room a lot, and Tao and Nick again wrongly assume he's with one of them. We never actually see him eat anything while in the art room, and there's a scene in S1 episode 7 where he opens his lunchbox, stares at its contents, then closes it.

yay! i absolutely love your reactions! i’m so glad ur picking up on charlie’s patterns. it’s so important and many reactors tend to not see them. with mental health it can be sorta invisible so it’s important to bring awareness to the patterns of what it looks like when something is off. charlie’s obsession with perfection, control and he has this pathological altruism. i think it’s important to remember charlie was outed, bullied and harassed, abused and assaulted by ben. we are slowly starting to peel the layers as to how much charlie was affected by all this and how he is coping with it all. charlie always seems to deeply care, uplift and support those around him but fails to do that for himself. he’s also facing whatever he’s going through alone bc his parents and friends don’t seem to pick up on his dysfunctional habits. charlie is stuck in a warped mindset that without any professional help could be on a very dangerous path :/

GCSEs are exams taken in year 11 (when u are 15/16) they are quite important as for some colleges/sixth form you need certain grades in order to get it. if you fail maths and english you can retake, and also some unis look at these results as well as the results you get at the end of college/sixth form i think thats everything 😭😭

As a German I actually relate quite a bit as we have a simmilar system with our GCSE's being called ZAP (Year 11 is Year 10 here but the age is also 15/16) and you either qualify for sixth form (called upper level "Oberstufe") with certain grades or do an apprenticeship whose theoretic parts are taken at a vocational school ("Berufskolleg").

I forget what book it is(I wanna say the heartstopper yearbook, highly recommend btw) but Alice puts a whole section dedicated to all of the British lingo and explains things like gsce, year 10, year 11, etc @@KristinaEspinoza

@@KristinaEspinoza The SAT are standardized generalized tests. Not every school covers the identical topics during the school year. The SATs assume that every school covers exactly the same stuff. I believe the GCSE's match the actual curriculum more closely. (One thing I noticed was that Nick was taking an exam in chemistry. Our SAT's cover only math, and English. )

Such a sweet reaction! I remember you being really perceptive about Charlie's mental health in S1, and you're picking up a lot of what's being foreshadowed here too. I'm sorry to hear that you're finding some of what he's going through relatable. ❤ We Are Okay is a little heavy, but definitely overall hopeful, you should give it a read! So in 2x1, when the guys go INTO the closet so Nick can say that he came OUT of the closet to his mom the night before -- well I cracked up. (Yes, I'm a bit warped.) Time frame: So the sports day was the Friday before this, and Sunday was when they went to the beach. Sunday after the beach trip, Nick came out to his mom. This is about 9 am the following morning (Monday). (Kit Connor pointed out that we have to suspend disbelief because he was a year or so older on Monday than he was on Sunday. (He was 2 inches taller (went from 5'11" to 6'1") and he had filled out a lot. (The baby face of 1x3 is now gone)) At first the difference jarred me, especially since I have re-binged this show MANY times -- but once I stay in season 2 for a while, I get used to the new Nick, no problem. 😊

When Imogen suggests Nick tell of his romantic developments, he looks like he might -- but as we'll see in this episode later, Nick has a lot of trouble "saying the words." I've heard people say that 'saying the words' when you are not truly ready is REALLY difficult. [Stuffy academic aside: I saw articles going all the way back to the 1970s, in which linguists (of various types) analyzed what they called the "performative speech-act of coming out." If I start quoting/summarizing the articles, I'll never finish this comment before bed time. (The easiest example of a performative speech act is the one in which an officient at a wedding (minister or whatever) says "I now pronounce you spouse and spouse." By saying those words, the officient has performed the act of marrying the couple. The unmarried people, through that act, have changed their social status from unmarried to married.) Similarly, part of what the articles said had to do with the feeling that once you say it (come out) -- socially, you change the definition of who you are. It becomes real (and feels permanent).] ***** ***** That's my clumsy way of saying that there are real understandable reasons for Nick feeling blocked from making his statement. I think he grapples with this throughout this season...

3:05 Charlie meant he was going to help Nick come out with the people 'that matter.' (Which is what Nick said he wanted to do when they were at the beach) Tao's reaction : Okay. Well, as long as you're both fine with it, and you're looking out for each other, I'm sure it'll be fine. I was impressed by this; it is the most supportive Tao has been when it comes to the guys' relationship (So far (He gets better as the season progresses.))

Yes, I believe the 3 guys who called Nick and Charlie "Good Mates" do 'know' about Nick and Charlie. I think there is a convention that you can notice it, think it, but out of politeness you don't say it until (in this case) Nick overtly tells you. I think we've seen that 'rule' at work in season 1 on and off. And Nick and Charlie are being less circumspect now. (The coach has to say something because she has to make sure the teammates get along properly.)

Christian, Sai, and Otis definitely know. I think their plan was to show Nick they are safe people. Nick probably would have told them but Christian said good mates and it threw him off. In episode 1, Otis makes a point of being nice to Charlie while Christian and Sai check on Nick. Harry being Harry charges in and ruins everything. They try again in episode 3 where Christian puts his foot in his mouth throwing off any confidence Nick had. After Nick leaves Otis asks Christian why he said that. You can even see Otis look exasperated when Christian says it.

Sports day was Friday, beach day was Sunday, and episode 1 of season 2 picks up on Monday. Nick is 3 inches taller. 😂😂❤❤

I think what Tao meant is that it's unexpected (for him) that Nick isn't a two-dimensional, stereotypical rugby lad and popular boy. Tao has always assumed Nick's life to be perfect, and in S1 he has resented Charlie for protecting Nick so much because "god forbid Nick Nelson faces ONE challenge in his life" sorta thing. But now he's found out that he speaks another language AND that he's not close to his father (which is a delicate subject for Tao) so he's pretty taken aback. Bilingual boys raised by their single mothers and who are the closest people to Charlie... Tao and Nick are more similar than Tao would have thought. I think this is the first time that he sees Nick as something more than just "Charlie's rugby boyfriend". As sad as it is, they could bond over the absence of their father figures and their worry for and protectiveness over Charlie. It's not enough to form a solid friendship yet, but it's a start. And Tao was not expecting that lol Tao has always been hellbent on disliking Nick... and now he's starting to figure out that it's an impossible task :)

I believe that Tao and Nick begin bonding over their protectiveness of Charlie at the end of season 2 (in 2x8). And I believe that Nick begins to see the similarity between him and Tao at about the same time.

47:40 I am sometimes puzzled about why Tao abruptly leaves to go to the vending machines. My first read was that he was embarrassed hearing Nick's compliments. But why tell Isaac to join him and why were they gone so long. So my second read was (in addition to the compliment issue) -- maybe Tao and Isaac agreed ahead of time to leave the room so Nick and Charlie could have the room to themselves for a while. 🤷

1. I cannot WAIT for part 2. Honestly, the second half of the season is even better (and your predictions are amazing). 2. I actually live in Paris and I love it! I’m an American so it’s for sure a bit of a trek. It’s not like, the best place in the world but like…I’ve never been a city girl. It’s still a fun city to live in! I like going to do touristy things every once in a while.

43:20 ish Another Nick responds "in the background" bit: Imogen, to change the subject away from herself, asks Elle if she has any romance going. (Nick smiles a bit) Imogen asks "how about you and Tao." (Nick smiles even more [he's a Tao/Elle shipper]) Elle proclaims, "Never going to happen!" (Nick looks like he going to burst out laughing) Elle says they're fine being just friends. (Nick is still trying to contain himself) Imogen looks at Elle in disbelief, then Imogen smiles and turns to Nick and says, " Maybe I haven't had the best track record of relationships" (And she and Nick share a laugh about that ( which makes me think she's pointing out with humor that her attempt at the relationship with Nick bombed for reasons she now understands)) Imogen continues, "but I think being honest is better than living with regret." This last comment is aimed at Elle, BUT I think it is a callback to the conversation that Nick had with Imogen on the park bench in season 1. Nick had told the truth to her, to explain that he was not interested in being in a couple with her. She thanked him for his honesty, which saved both of them a lot of regret at that time.

To answer two of your questions: GCSE’s are the exams we take in our last year of high school. When I was in year 11 we didn’t have a study hall though it’s different at each school, at mine we just did revision for each subject whilst in those specific classes. And yes trips abroad are common. I didn’t take a language subject but I did do history so the trip I could go on was to Auschwitz, although I wasn’t able to go.

As I understand it, the GCSE's are not, as some Americans suggest, like our SAT's. They cover the subjects that the students have been studying in classes, over time. (Also, some Americans do not know what they mean by 'revision.'; The equivalent word is 'review'. In study hall, they are reviewing all their notes.

Season 2 of Hertstopper is way "mature" and its good. i doesnt need to bring serious stuff like drugs using , sex with everyone and things like that. Its good to see a show where we can feel the "cute love" and yet learn important lessons without making a tragic history. That is one of the things that i love about this show.

Charlie and the history coursework/term paper ... We know that Charlie is "a proper nerd" (Nick says this in 1x2). He's good at all academic subjects and the teacher said that he had been having stellar grades until lately. (His grades had started 'slipping'; but what does 'slipping' mean in his context? Could he have been an A student, but his grades slipped to a B average? (The only work he had to do, in order to pass, the one course, was the coursework term paper. Charlie knows what the topics of the coursework are. And he said that he'd be able to finish it because there are still weeks left in the term. There are some very bright students whose writing process involves spending a lot of time ( possibly weeks) thinking about what and how they will write an essay/term paper. They do all the work of planning and composing in their heads. Then, at the end of the process, they basically type up what they've worked out in their heads. And we see in this episode, that Charlie has used just that process.

45:59 1. Many Reactors are very annoyed by Imogen early in season 1. They start cutting her more slack at the end of 1x5. BUT when we witness her harangue at Ben, the same reactors have said things like she's the MVP of episode 2x4. 2. Harry gets points for chiding Ben 3. In the bathroom conversation, when Imogen says things would be easier if she were "into girls," both Charlie and Nick say Not necessarily (although Nick says he understands what she means.) 4. Can I just say THAT HUG!!!! All over the place, I see people commenting that they need a hug from Nick Nelson. Hugs are his superpower. ETC. When I see him begin to hug Imogen, and then turns to fold Charlie into the same hug -- Wow! First of all, his arms are long enough to envelop both of them comfortably. And that warm smile of contentment. As he gently rocks back and forth. Truly his superpower.

Oh, you should definitely give Paris a chance! It's such a beautiful city (the centre and historical part, at least, though some of the suburbs, like Vincennes, are also lovely). What negative things have you heard about Paris?? Beautiful architecture and parks, fantastic museums and galleries, great food, efficient public transport, lots of shopping, what's not to love???

One thing to note is that the big reason Charlie tried to make Nick's coming out "perfect" is because he's projecting his underlying trauma around being accidentally outed (and subsequently bullied for it) onto Nick. It is heavily implied that Charlie's household is emotionally neglectful (evidenced by how much more involved Tori is in emotionally supporting Charlie than his own parents), and because Charlie doesn't feel like he deserves to open up about his trauma with either his family and friends, Charlie is left with no outlet to process it properly. So he subconsciously attempts to "fix" his trauma by controlling Nick's "coming out" (which was inevitably futile). This is why Charlie is haunted by the specters of his bullies, following Nick's fight with his brother. Overall, Heartstopper S2 deals with the intersection of queer trauma and interpersonal dysfunction is an incredibly poignant way, and I love it so much.

Re: "No hanky-panky until you're married" This line throws me for a couple of reasons. 1. I am seriously old (72), so the vast majority of my lifetime, gays could not marry in the US. So dad's demand jars me. (If they couldn't marry, then what? No sex EVER?! ) (Yes, it's because I'm old with an excessive long-term memory) 2. When I was growing up (long before marriage equality), the 'no hanky-panky until marriage' rule was aimed at straight couples in order to keep the pregnancy rate down. Nick and Charlie are not likely to get pregnant, so...what's the big effin' deal? *** *** I mentioned this to my son, a millennial, who reminded me that the age of consent in the UK is 16. Nick is 16 now. Charlie is only 15. (This show emphasizes issues of consent, so I get this.) [Yes, not all teens wait until they are 16+ (They didn't when I was 16, either) -- but the nature of the show leans towards taking your time.... So....ok.]

GCSEs are exams you take at the end of year 11, which is equivalent to American 10th Grade. If you are in Year 10 or 11, you are in your GCSE years, so both Charlie and Nick are and Nick is taking his GCSE exams this year. The last 2 years of American high school are your A Levels when you are in the UK.

42:27 Tao and Elle return from this first, more natural date. Tao joins the boys; Elle joins the girls. They both say that they are back to normal/back to being friends. This is a good thing. Up until now, they weren't really speaking. Their relationship, after the cinema date, had taken a nosedive. Now they are back up to at least where they started. This opens up the possibility that their relationship can continue improving. Have faith!

You are the only reactor I've seen who noticed that Imogen is left by herself while everybody else is looking for the groups of 4 for the hotel rooms. Imogen tends to always/mostly hang out with groups of guys. At her table, there were ONLY GUYS this time. When it was time to choose groups, the guys all left the table and Imogen was left standing alone, looking sad. The 4 girls at our group's table were taken. No other girls from the rest of the room were approaching her. I have no idea which girls Imogen joined during the Paris trip. Very sad.

But at this point they have not gotten away from Harry and they were some of the guys who just stood by when Harry bullied Charlie at the cinema. So at the moment they are on Nick's shitlist. I think that what Tao meant by "unexpected" about Nick wasn't really his dad being French, and more that he was bilingual with Daddy issues like Tao. They have something in common and he didn't expect to see Nick as a multi dimensional human.

Not getting this. I've read books 1-5, "This Winter," and "Nick and Charlie" Tori seems to like Nick in both the show and the books. Charlie's mom does not seem to like Nick in the series (Tori even comments on this in episode 7), until after the dinner at Nick's house in 2x7. Since Tori's attitude and Charlie's mom's attitude are different from each other -- how are their attitudes the same?
