The thing I love about this movie is how the stakes are so low, just learning to speak without stuttering, and yet so high because of who he is & what's going on in the world. It definitely deserved those Academy Awards & all the other awards it got that year.

The Queen Mother (wife of King George IV) was asked if a movie could be made and she said yes but not while she was still alive. She said the memories were too painful. This movie was made after she passed.

At the end when you were happy they remained friends.... I remember a story when this came out, the producers (directors, writer et al) were doing research, and chatted with one of Lionel's sons, to get insight to him, how to portray him. He dug out correspondence his dad received from King Edward. The letters really showed the depth and longevity of their friendship. It was such a treasure trove that helped them craft their partnership on screen. Heard Queen Elizabeth appreciated this movie, as she felt they captured the loving and wonderful person her father was. Movie deserved its Oscar wins.

That is the actor who played Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall). Bertie’s father (George V) was played by Michael Gambon, who was Dumbledore, and Bertie’s Wife (Elizabeth Bowes Lyon) was played by Helena Bonham Carter, who played Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter! She is very talented. Can play the elite to the vilest person, a chameleon. Yes, I know that is what acting is supposed to be about but many get typecast or simply don't have that kind of range. You'd never see a Dame Judi Dench or Helen Mirren also being in roles like "Fight Club", "Les Mis" or a chimp suit in "Planet of the Apes".

This film took many years to get made. David Seidler who wrote this movie started work on it back in the 1980's but Seidler wanted to get the blessing of The Queen Mother (played by Helena Bonham Carter) before making the movie. The Queen Mother gave her blessing but asked if this movie could only be made after her death as there were a lot of painful memories she didn't want to relive to which Seidler agreed. Of course what nobody knew at the time was that the Queen Mother would live to the age of 102 finally passing in 2002. Sadly David Seidler passed away just a few days ago.

He was the unexpected king. Became king because his brother abdicated. He was king at a time when Britain was in trouble. During World War II he stayed with his people during the bad times, he could have moved to Canada, Australia or South Africa (all parts of the Empire) but didn’t. His speeches during the war gave Britain (and the Empire) hope, speeches that took a lot out of him for reasons we see in this film. With loads of respect to Elizabeth II his daughter, King George VI was the British monarch of the 20th Century, in my humble opinion. Thanks for watching this movie,Kamilla. And lots of prayers and good wishes for your operation and speedy recovery.

Such an amazing movie... one of those I didn't expect to like but ended up loving. Two amazing things (among many in this movie!)... Bertie's daughter, "Lilibet"... is the late Queen Elizabeth II. And, Lionel? If you've watched any of the Pirates of the Carribean movies, he played Captain Barbosa. Everyone in this movie brought their "A" game!

Yet still, the composition of the shots veers heavily to the inept. I never understood this about Tom Hooper. I love history but can't watch his John Adams miniseries because the majority of it is shot Dutched with excessive head room and no nose room. He did this with Les Misérables as well. It baffles the mind.

@@bighuge1060 In all those cited cases, it was done with the proper intent. To make the viewer feel rushed, uneasy or even dizzy at the events "spinning" around them. He does perhaps favor it more than usual. I can remember the two shots of it in "Prince of Thieves" when I first noticed that as a high school student. One on Guy and one on the witch and sheriff. There it was to indicate that the character was uneasy or mad. Anyway, the filming composition seems more the responsibility of the cinematographer than the director, no?

Add to that that the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes who ended up becoming the Anglo-Saxons and later the modern English, were Germanic tribes, and that English is a Germanic language. So hence why I find it annoying when people get the terms German and Germanic mixed up. Nordics, Germans, Dutch (+ Flemish), English, and Scots (but not the Gaels of Scotland) constitute Germanic Europe. :)

Glad that you have reacted to this fine movie! Colin Firth, the actor playing Bertie in The King's Speech, played Mr. Darcy in the fabulous 1996 BBC mini-series adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice". I enjoyed your reaction to the more recent movie adaptation of Jane Austen's novel, and I hope at some time in the future, whether for a reaction or for your own pleasure, you will take the time to see the 1996 mini-series adaptation. With a longer running time, the plot and characters become more nuanced. Btw, at the end of the movie, when Bertie asks his two little daughters about his speech, the first one, Elizabeth, who comments, was the future Queen Elizabeth II of the UK and Commonwealth. One of the greatest monarchs in British history, and the longest reigning of all of them, she died a year and a half ago.

When Myrtle, still starstruck, asks "Will your Majesties be staying for dinner?" she worries about the task ahead of her, trying to put on her families best for them. The Queen picks up on this and graciously gives her an out. So good.

I was on a roof that collapsed last year, snapped multiple bones in both legs, 5 hours on the operating table, 4 months in hospital and I'm still learning to walk again. A few inaccuracies in the movie: Bertie started working with Lionel only a couple of years after the speech in Wembley stadium - 1927. The evil nanny actually hated David as much as she did Bertie. Churchill was not concerned that David wasn't a good king. He was a big fan of David's and continued to defend him even after he abdicated. Lionel's methods actually are unknown. He played it very close to the chest. He didn't leave any records behind. Some of what he did can be inferred from remarks he made about speech therapy. Lionel's descendants say it was very unlikely that he called King George VI Bertie. David says "Herr Hitler will sort them out," and later Churchill says there are doubts as to whose side David will be on in the event of war with Germany. David was naïve, and didn't really care, when it came to Germany and to fascism. (There was a faction in the United States that was pro-Germany. Its most famous spokesman was aviator Charles Lindbergh. He went to Germany in the mid-'30s and received a decoration and an honorary commission from Hermann Göring, commander of the Luftwaffe. Although Lindy renounced his stand and his decoration when the U.S. entered the war, President Roosevelt didn't trust him and wouldn't let him train pilots.) von Ribbentrop sent 17 carnations to Wallis because he and Wallis had spent 17 nights together. David and Wallis had a weird, sleazy life together after he abdicated. They cheated on each other many times and were generally unlikable, and unpopular wherever they went. They also were neither of them very bright.

This movie is wonderful. One of the last good dramas. It's moving, beautiful and enthralling. They don't make these anymore

A BIG movie here in the UK - and anywhere in Europe that retains a constitutional monarchy (despite the efforts of 18th century France). Thanks, Centane - good movie, good reactions, you might have started a reaction trend here...

*_THANK YOU_* for watching this one!!! I have been trying for ages to persuade ANY reactor to give this one a try. I continue to be amazed that hardly anyone has done it. -on the first visit when Bertie says he “doesn’t care”, he doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about having a speech impediment; what he means that he doesn’t care _WHY_ he stammers, or what the cause is, he just wants it fixed. (He is not getting that root causes need to be addressed in order to make any change) Interestingly- he never actually came across to me as “aggressive” or violent, per se. His outbursts of temper showed real anger and extreme frustration; they were loud and perhaps startlingly abrupt; but they never felt _threatening_ to me- they raised no fears in my mind that he might haul off and hurt someone. It read (to me) mzuch more as _defensiveness_, than _unkindness._ Even Lionel seems to recognize this: on first encountering these explosions, he doesn’t even flinch, but calmly notes, “You’ve got a bit of a temper”, as if discussing the weather. Later on he explains to his wife that one of his clients is fighting him- why?- _”he’s afraid of his own shadow”._

Get well as soon as possible! You know this was history, Bertie was monikered "King George VI", "Queen Elizabeth II" 's father. This story is true, (not word by word, of course) the changes were made for cinema's sake. That is because "Churchill" 's actor IS the same actor from Harry Potter, George VI 's father actor is Dumbledore from Harry Potter, too. You can find the "real king's war speech" on KZfaq.

Great reaction to a great movie, Kamilla. I'm not a 'patreon', just ordinary subscriber, but have the audacity to request 'Finding Neverland' (2005), featuring Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and others, if you've not seen it. No-one seems to react to this little gem for some reason and you are one of the few who could do it justice - right up your alley I think. Hope your surgery went well and good luck to you, ma'am..

I'm a believer in where you are from is a fact. Not something to be proud or ashamed of. But seeing this scene does tickle at some subconscious british pride in me.

I really love that Bertie did not become excellent. He managed to get through the speech, not nailed it. Way more believable this way. Captain Barbossa was terrific.

24:22 In fact, Churchill supported a compromise which would have allowed Edward to marry Wallis and keep ghe crown, but no children from their union would be eligible to be King or Queen.
