I laughed out loud when I heard small bones Derek's breakfast & lunch. So many 'hard gainers' just have absolutely no frame of reference for how much big strong people typically eat. 6'8 450lb strongman Brian Shaw said eating is actually the hardest part of his lifestyle since people that big literally have to force feed themselves most meals of every day to get the calories in.

Regarding potassium supplementation as a remedy for muscle cramps (I'm sure Rip knows this very well, but he doesn't have time to comment on everything in the podcast), that advice is ONLY for people with NORMAL kidney function. It is indeed very hard to take too much potassium orally, so much that it leads to hyperkalemia, for people with working kidneys. The kidneys have very high capacity to excrete excess potassium. But if your kidney function is impaired, you can have too high potassium intake, and it is one of the main reason for death in people with chronic kidney disease. The risk for hyperkalemia is also increased if you use blood pressure lowering agents like ACE-inhibitors or ARBs (like Valsartan). As for salt (as in sodium), again, if you have impaired kidney function (beyond CKD stage 4 at least), too high sodium intake can give you volume overload (you get thirsty and drink more, and your kidneys can't keep up the excretion rate), leading to high blood pressure and other stuff you don't want to have. I'm sure most of you with impaired kidney function know this stuff already, but just wanted to make sure... Sorry, I'm a nephrologist.

Just a little note about potassium. They have "heart healthy" salts in supermarkets that have lower levels of sodium because they're actually part NaCl (sodium chloride) and KCl (potassium chloride). Some of these "heart healthy" salts have a bigger ratio of potassium to sodium, some and just pure potassium. Like Mark, I'm in Texas, and I always cramp during the summer, despite easily drinking over a gallon of water a day, so I started putting KCl in my water. Boy oh boy, you have to titrate that stuff slowly or you're going to be shitting half a dozen times a day, and I wouldn't even call it shitting so much as it's pissing out of your ass. So be careful, and have fun.

I don't know what would Richard Feynman answer to the question "is there such thing as gravity", but it's a great question, because physicist (or an aspiring one) isn't supposed to blindly accept such things, he should be able to explain why he thinks it is the best solution to the problem

The minute something other than how heavy the bar was, how good your form was, and how heavy you are is taken into consideration the competition's legitimacy begins to erode. Politics has been the one word epitaph of countless sport leagues. Do you really want a trophy or medal knowing that someone who doesn't wear a mask could have had a higher total than you? Do you want to be known as the world's strongest man knowing that 10 of the top guys didn't show up this year because there's a new steroid ban? Sticking with a governing body that makes decisions like that will leave you with only one thing that can be certain: One day all your hard work to satisfy them will have been a waste of your time.
