I started forging around 5 years ago and have used a bunch of ridiculous things as an anvil. I started out with a section of an I-beam which was absolutely horrid. I then graduated to a piece of railroad track and finally to my first "anvil"; a 66lb cast steel anvil I bought from Walmart.com for $170. It was too small and it is kind of a crappy anvil but it will, in fact, get the job done if you're willing to put the work in. It has served me well until now but I was recently fortunate enough to stumble upon a Mouse Hole 140lb anvil. It was in fair shape but had some questionable repairs done to the edges of the face. I decided to take the risk and buy it because it was so inexpensive and after cleaning it up and mounting it I'm glad I did! Watch the video to see how I did it.
