It’s been a few weeks since my last upload:apologies for the gap-I’ve been busy with a few commissions thankfully!
So, for this demonstration I thought I would show you how I try to keep the loose, lively feel of a drawing done at speed, using a loose grip and constantly looking at the subject rather than the drawing. You’ll be surprised at just how accurate your drawing is using this method, but obviously if you’re not keen on loose lines and prefer an accurate, almost technical drawing then this method may not be for you.
I’m going to add some watercolour to the drawing, and I’upload that over the weekend.
As always, please ask away with any questions or comments- I always look forward to hearing from you all.
The materials used in this video:
Comic SP Multiliner pen,0.1 nib. These pens aren’t cheap, but they are refillable, and nibs can be replaced.
Sea white of Brighton A5 watercolour journal: my go-to sketchbook, with great paper quality that takes line and watercolour equally well. The other feature I love is that the binding allows you to open a double page spread nice and flat-great for panoramic landscapes.

Completely understand what you mean about tightening-up for commissioned work - I just get the overwhelmed by the need to be more precise when someone is paying!

I greatly enjoyed the demonstration, full of useful tips and guidance. I like the idea of holding the pen at the end to give more freedom. It creates a different sort of line, but it is so easy to drift back down to the nib. One factor is that not all pens are easily usable at an angle, including the Copic fineliners when the nib is a bit worn.

Can’t wait for part two. I love pen work but struggle a bit with wash. Just to clarify- is there a typo? It looks like a Coptic multiliner. You have comic. Or is it a regional name.

Do you find that loose almost fluid work done with ink sells to western audiences? Especially if someone does more fluid type mixed in with hard edges. For recency I am referring to work similar to a Malaysian Asian Kiah Keene does
