This nearly-completed piece is a commission,& as It neared completion, it struck me that the final stages would make a great demonstration of just how much the use of shadows can add drama, dynamics and really help to impart a sense of light to a painting.
I mention the colours I used for the shadow colour in my commentary: the paint is all Daniel Smith, and the paper is 300g Saunders Waterford rough. The subject is a street in the Yorkshire Dales village of Appletreewick - oddly enough, pronounced ‘ Aptrick’ by the locals.

Hi John, I've been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now and you've inspired me to start painting again. It's about 30 odd years since I did any. I bought everything yesterday and intend to have a go tonight! I must admit, I was a bit on edge when you first started with the wash on the left but it all looks fantastic. I hope I can have the same confidence eventually to put in shadows because they really do give everything dimension. Thanks for your informative videos.

Well, this is just up my alley. I sketch for 3-4 hours (an A4) just for the shadows! :D Oh, oh, I sure hope you added the poles shadows!

Very nice. Question, wouldn’t the telephone pole have a shadow on the road?
